This was probably the hardest non-Nightmare game I've played so far. Powerups of any kind aren't usable at all. This one rule causes a lot of problems. First, the major one, is that powerups are still generated, and thus takes up space that could've been used to generate a medpack or a piece of armor. At least in Impatience players are able to use the items, but here the powerups might as well be empty dungeon squares. Second, the player have to get into the habit of stocking up on armors. Without armor shards, the only way to repair armor is by armor repair depots. Finding the repair levers are pretty rare, so there really isn't any way to depend on them to keep your armor in good shape, so you really have to get used to using the armor given as much as possible. Lastly, there is no way to gain Invulnerability for easy level clearing or Berserk for enhanced speed and resistances ( outside of Berserker, which I believe is a pretty risky playstyle without powerups ), with exceptions being the lava element and chainsaw, but their effects are one-use.
Started the game off with a Scout going for Intx2. I thought the Scout class is pretty important due to stair-sense since some levels may put the player in a very tough situation at the start and the only chance the player has is to run, especially now since the AI has been updated to chase better. Intx2 helps with radar-shooting enemies, but more imporantly it IDs levers. Levers can provide additional healing outside of medpacks and armor repair, both of which are pretty important. Levers can also set the room you're in on fire, so IDing them helps with seperating the good from the bad.
On the first level, it was very important to get all four medpacks without taking too much damage. I had to restart a few times to get an acceptable result. On the next few levels I used a combination of doorways, radar-shooting, and gift-dropping to fight as many enemies one-on-one as possible. I believe Hell's Arena generated in level 2. I skipped it because it would've made Chained Court a lot harder since I couldn't use the Berserk Packs, but thinking about it now I forgot that I could stopped after the second wave and still get the large med pack.
After getting Intx2, I had to think about what traits I should be planning on getting. Originally I thought about getting Shottyhead, but it required Shottyman and that alone is worth 3 levels. 3 levels is a lot to wait for while filling in Ironman in between for instant healing and to increase effectiveness of medpacks. I also needed Dodgemaster by the time I get to the Cyberdemon as well, which is also not part of Shottyhead's requirements. In fact, all the Scout master traits require quite a bit of investment into offensive traits early on, so I decided to just go Masterless, fill up on speed whenever I can ( HR for speed/dodge chance/Dodgemaster, Fin for fire speed ) and Ironman whenever I'm a bit hurt on level up.
Chained court has the chainsaw, which gave the Berserk Pack effect ( healing and status ), so I took the free health and left. I had to enter the Wall for a quick escape, then left because I didn't want to have to deal with Arch-Viles and an army of ammo sponges. I ran past Phobos Anamoly since I was really low on health reserves by that point. Managed to run to the door and close it just enough to gain some distance before it was open again. Ran in between the Bruisers then tried to stay in cover after getting past them to enter the gate.
Shortly after Phobos Anamoly, I found the assault shotgun. I was still using the normal shotgun up to this point because I wasn't lucky enough to get a combat shotgun, so I welcomed the upgrade. Around this time is also where I found both the plasma rifle and the rocket launcher. I needed the plasma rifle because sometimes I can't afford to knock an enemy out of melee range since almost all of them have more dangerous ranged attacks or if a Baron or Hell Knight wear some armor. I agility modded the plasma rifle as soon as I found one. The rocket launcher was needed to fight the Cyberdemon, and I bulk-modded it so I can keep up with the Cyberdemon while reloading. I skipped all the special levels in Episode 2 due to either the lack of health and/or supplies for what I have to go through to finish the level.
Cyberdemon has to be killed through damage. Nuking him is not an option to advance. I went in with the rocket launcher first since it started close to wall. I either shot at it or reloaded once per one of its moves just to be safe. After running out of rockets ( only found one stack up to this point ) I switched to the plasma rifle. Fired until the rifle was empty, and the Cyberdemon was mortally wounded. I chose not to reload the rifle because the reload time is really long and it will allow the Cyberdemon to hit me, so I just switched to the assault shotgun and finished it off.
Episode 3 was where it really got tense, with levels just filled with AVMRBs, turning each corner had the possibility of getting sniped by one of the above. For the most part I just ran for the stairs whenever I can, only stopping if there's a large med pack or homing phase in sight without imminent danger. There were a few levels where the stairs were generated on the other side of the map, that is where I used napalm/acid barrels to create barriers so I can safely radar-shoot enemies. Thankfully, commando/sergeant packs were still being generated at that point so I was still stocked up on ammo.
I managed to find a nuke in the 20s. With a nuke in hand I knew that I didn't need anything else against SM, so I just speed ran past everything as fast as I could. I burned (homing) phase devices and just bee-lined to the stairs at every opportunity. I don't think I even fired a bullet in the last few levels. Once I reached Dis I activated the nuke and just ran in place until it blew up.
Unfortunately I can't remember the fine details of the run as I waited a few hours before writing this up. But that is pretty much what I remember in general in the run. Overall, I'd say it's one of the hardest challenges in the game. Not sure why this is only rated "Hard" in the Challenges screen, should be at least in Masochism's level. Playing this on UV made me realize how important powerups really are and how fragile characters seem to be without them.

« on: October 25, 2011, 11:40 »Say guys, what should I do with this little Cybernetic armor I have?
Wait for power mods to make it Nanofiber/ Skin(!?!), or just bulk mod it? (Currently B1T2 in the inventory.)
If you can make the Cybernetic Armor indestructible, by all means do it. You can't remove it, so you should might as well make sure the armor doesn't become a complete hindrance that doesn't give any benefits.

In the wiki for the assemblies, it says "Beware: ammo regeneration prevents manual reloading including pumping which may be undesirable for some shotguns. ", that's the part where I'm confused at for combat shotguns. If you really have to move in order to fire Nano'd combat shotgun, it'll give the Shambler much more time to just teleport around ( since you won't be given the benefit of shell boxes either if this is true ).
Just a little confusion in my part, nothing big.

Basically, I know when I made a plasmatic shrapnel ( the tier 1 version ) normal shotgun, the shell regenerated right when I fired it, so I basically had an infinite ammo shotgun. However, I'm not sure how this will affect combat shotguns though, since there's a warning for ones that require pumps.

Also try to equip a shell box ( or power box for plasma shotgun ) for quick reloads to minimize the chance that it'll teleport away. Assemblies ( if you can find the mods ) of either plasmatic shrapnel or nano-shrapnel can also help maximize damage/need of reloading.

0.9.9.4 / Re: [H|YAAM] Just building stuff
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:31 »That BFG+ is fun, eh? :D FYI, when I got it, a direct hit brought JC from "Unhurt" to "Severely Wounded."
Also, nice Technician Diamond, there! :)
It was really fun to use, although I only got to use it in like the last 3 levels of the game. If I ever get around to UV Ao100 again, I might try to aim for this gun again. I remember how many tough enemies appear in the later levels when I did it in 0.9.9.3, and it'll be nice to have a gun that can deal with all of them swiftly.
And thanks, I was actually stuck at 39/40 assemblies for about 2 weeks and that one empty slot in my assembly list was bothering me, so I just decided to do a dedicated run to get it done.

Actually, my other Diamond is Gatekeeper.
It was for a Elite Platinum, but I killed myself here since I was using a non-modded combat knife in a normal game, which would mean I had to do about a few thousand hits on the Angel of Death, so I just suicided ( got the badge in the next run I think ).

Nothing special this time around. Originally intended to be a YAAM and Conqueror run, I didn't have any envirosuits for Lava Pits in this run. I think the only one that I found in the game was used in Hell's Armory after beating the Shambler.
I managed to construct quite a few decent pieces of equipment. The super shotgun was extremely helpful in this run. It appeared at Hell's Armory and a lot of bulk and power mods generated in this run, so I managed to buff it up quite a bit. With the mods, a few points into SoB, and enough points into Reloader to get Shottyman, not even Arachnotrons were able to keep up with the knockback in extreme range. Even Arch-Viles were having a hard time getting close enough to use their attacks.
The BFG(+) was constructed right before the Mortuary, and it was a big help. One shot from the weapon and most of the enemies caught in the blast radius just get destroyed, and corpses within like a skull's radius all get gibbed. Unfortunately I didn't have much ammo going into the Mortuary, so I had to stick the nBFG and BFG(+) in my weapon slots and just dance around until one of them is fully charged.
Cyberdemon died really fast. Entered Phobos Arena with about 25 turns of Invulnerability left. The Cyberdemon spawned barely in my Intuition range, so I fired the nBFG first, then swapped to the BFG(+), then finally finished it off with a single rocket, so he went down within 3 attacks. I probably could've went for a full win since the BFG(+) can possibly kill the boss in one shot, and I have plenty of rockets as backup. But maybe for another time.

Not sure if this counts as an internal resistance source, but using envirosuits give you +25% resistance to both fire and acid. I tend to keep one around with me at all times in case I run into large groups of Barons, Mancubi, and Revenants.

Ah, that makes sense. I was wondering why it kept constantly activating during the Cyberdemon fight even though I wasn't taking much damage. Thanks for the answers.

I'm not sure if this is already stated somewhere, but how much damage do you have to take for the "That hurt!" part of the Berserker trait to activate?

0.9.9.4 / [H|AoH|32%|YAVP] Trying something different
« on: October 07, 2011, 23:22 »
GH: Tidying up tag.
First death was due to a Cacodemon cave, second one was because of running into a commando/sergeant group with an empty shotgun.
(Not sure if mortems within mortems is legal, but I would like to show some of the failures. Remove it if necessary)
First time I got to the Cyberdemon, I tried to build up on melee after seeing GH run through it a few times. I pretty much just ran straight for the stairs each time, picking up any Berserk and Invulnerability powerup I can. When I reached Phobos Arena, I really didn't stand a chance. My traits didn't help with any of my weapons that I was carrying. Best thing I got was the rocket launcher with the rocket box for rapid reloading. It wasn't enough, however, since I didn't have any accuracy bonus I missed a lot, thus doing virtually no damage, and didn't have any defensive traits to survive the attacks. I also realized in that fight that the Cyberdemon is immune to splash, never really tried in the past.
In the next attempt where I got to Phobos Arena again...
...I was actually pretty confident this time around. Managed to get to the Cyberdemon with a chainsaw, bulk modded for extra damage, 2 points in Brute, and started out invincible. One very important thing I forgot, and that was invincible does not protect from knockback. Got a bit overconfident and tried to rush the Cyberdemon directly in the effort to preserve invincibility, but the Cyberdemon just kept knocking me back before I realized what happened. Turned on running when I saw my invulnerability turn grey, but by then it was too late because I was still about 4 squares away so I just didn't have enough time to get back into melee range and survive.
So, since I needed the damage to kill the Cyberdemon quickly, but also needed something counter the Cyberdemon's accuracy and knockback, there was only one thing I can really do. I had to kill enough enemies in order to get Berserker, since it provides a massive increase in melee damage and all resistances, and especially since it can now active when just taking damage, Berserker was essential. Decided to just give up on Intuition and just go for Brute at the start since I was honestly just picking up powerups on the way to the stairs anyway so it wasn't all that useful.
Started out with only using the Chaingun for the first level since I couldn't find a sergeant before running into an imp horde blocking the rest of the level. Chained Court was where I really took a bit of time to get as much experience as possible without using a medpack. Started with the chaingun to clear out one side in order to pick up a shotgun and shells safely, then cleared out the sergeants at both stairs, and then finally pick up all the Berserk Packs and chainsaw for maximum berserk time. Berserk lasted me for a few levels, which I just spent the time to head for the stairs while killing anything that was on the way. After getting Berserker I really just went straight for the stairs as quickly as possible.
The major lifesaver in this game was the Enviroboots. In multiple levels, I started with a river running horizontally across the screen and walls blocking all my exits with the downstairs right across the river and bridge off to the other side of the map. This run probably wouldn't have made it if it weren't for the environmental immunity because in Unholy Cathedral I was at half health with 2 small med packs after the Angel of Death fight.
With the Longinus Spear in hand( great damage and knockback resistance), downstairs in the levels following Unholy Cathedral spawning close to the starting position, massive amount of berserk built up from Berserker activating when dealing and taking damage from the Angel of Death, and an extra medpack just in case, I was able to squeeze in a win. I wasn't expecting to finish the run that quick, since this time I actually tried to gain enough levels to take down the Cyberdemon, but I guess the final few levels contributed to that.
P.S. I guess I should really try to record runs I plan to post in order to save people from walls of text.
Oh, and sometimes I do hate the RNG...
Edit: Damn, missed a '%' on the title.

51 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
26 of those were killed.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
21 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
19 killed the bastard and survived.

I honestly wasn't expecting to get this one done since I was just looking at the Platinum/Diamond badges and just trying out each one to see how far I get. But, surprised at how far I got on my first death, I decided to just keep trying.First death was due to a Cacodemon cave, second one was because of running into a commando/sergeant group with an empty shotgun.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...I was actually pretty confident this time around.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.4 Win] Scavenged Unique Mods didn't count
« on: October 04, 2011, 07:31 »
I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but it doesn't seem like unique mods that were made from scavenging counts for the list of specials the player found. I got 2 Nano Packs from the same recent game using Scavenger on 2 uniques, but the Nano Pack wasn't logged until today where I found another one in a new game on the ground.

Doesn't seem too long ago when I did my first UV Marksman run in 0.9.9.3.Haven't had the time to pay much attention to challenges in this version, so I thought I'd give UV Marksman a try. I played Marksman on HNTR about a week ago with a Sharpshooter build and it worked very nicely as I found a GCB mid-game, and just destroyed enemies without much effort, so I try the build again hoping for about the same level of success.
Started the game with an agility and tech mod which I was very grateful for because I remember having to reload with pistols in early levels was an game killer. The next two levels after the entry was full of formers. I think half of my inventory was taken up by just 10mm ammo, so I was pretty confident in Hell's Arena as blind-fire would be more viable. The first two waves of Hell's Arena wasn't that bad, because if there weren't any enemies nearby, I'd just walk-->wait until I hear an enemy sound. If I don't hear anything I just move from cover to cover until I do hear one, then just walk--> wait some more until the enemy walks into my view and just go from there. When the Barons arrived, however, things got pretty bad. They spawned on opposite sides, and I had to use all my medpacks and running just to escape and find an okay corner ( was at 2 HP at one point ). I did manage to finish the Arena, but was left with pretty much no usable armor ( all the greens were below 20% condition ) and no medpacks. The Arena rewards did give me a bulk mod though, which was a rarity in this run for some reason.
Thankfully, I didn't enter the next level in the middle with enemies all around, and I managed to find myself a power mod in a corner. This is the point where the gameplay got interesting. I had SoG(3) by this point, and when combined with a 2d7 HP pistol, I was starting to see some knockback. I basically used the HP pistol to one-shot formers for ammo conservation, and save the speedloader for tougher enemies that will definitely take multiple hits. A few levels later and I managed to get the Master Trait, Sharpshooter. With Sharpshooter, I was pretty much guaranteed to knockback any enemy with the HP pistol ( first time where I managed to see a lost soul get knockback without dying ). Unfortunately, all the vaults I ran into up to this point only had like a small medpack, envirosuit, and a weapon I can't use, so my gear wasn't really improving much. I did find a bullet-proof vest though, but didn't have the mod to make it ballistic for bullet immunity, so I didn't keep it for long.
Hell's Armory went pretty well. Managed to kill the cacodemons at the start before they had a chance to hit. Shot down the doors in the first column of buildings to let the formers just trickle out. After that it was pretty much just walk-->wait in a safe corner until an enemy shows up then just blast it. Did that for a couple of minutes to clear out all the formers and most of the patrolling cacodemons. Didn't manage to get a perfect Hell's Armory run because a revenant sniped me when I wasn't expecting it to be free. The Shambler itself was pretty easy, especially since it didn't attack when I was running to a building for cover, and when it did teleport to my location, I was able to corner shoot it safely. The knockback from the HP pistol kept it from hitting me, and I took no damage from the Shambler itself. Unfortunately, the lab cache only gave me an advanced assembly schematic. Made myself some fireproof armor since the lab reward actually gave me the components, and two of the most dangerous enemies for me deal fire damage. This is also about the point where I got Juggler, which I found really useful. I can just shoot an enemy barely in my vision with the HP pistol for knockback, then blind fire the spot with the speedloader so I don't have to waste time reloading, and if the enemy gets back into view, I can just knock it back again and repeat. Works well for anything other than arachnotrons and arch-viles.
Mid to end game really wasn't that interesting, although it was pretty tense. Just ran past Hellgate. In the Phobos Hell levels, I tried to use my knockback capabilities, lava, and napalm barrels as much as possible to dispose of corpses. I was very low on medpacks throughout the entire game. However, I had a lot of ammo coming into Phobos Hell ( about 6 stacks of 10mm ammo and 3 ammo chains ), so I wasn't afraid to have an endurance match against arch-vile armies since I was able to kill most enemies before they could react. It also made corpse stacking in some places easier. I really didn't bother with any of the special levels after this point due to usually lacking health and no well-placed supercharge or invulnerability. Once SoG(4) and SoG(5) came along, things really became easier because I was able to knockback enemies using the speedloader pistol, which made great use out of the abundance of lava and acid. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish assembling the pistol I wanted ( the only reason I took Whizkid) , and I didn't find any usable uniques in the entire game ( only found the Dragonslayer in Phobos Hell, and I couldn't use it ). Probably could've done lava pits as there was another envirosuit pack on the previous level, but I didn't want to take the chance on a UV challenge game I didn't finish yet.
Cyberdemon was simple, but pretty frightening when I fought it. The Cyberdemon was almost in might sight when I entered the level, and I only had 2 med packs. I try to keep on running to avoid the rockets, but since the fight started real close to the north and western edges, I did take splash damage. I also wasted probably dozens of turns since I tend to dodge to early and not use my .1 seconds firing speed to the fullest. But I did manage to take it down in time ( think I was nearly out of running at the end, and had no way to replenish it ).
