It seems to be just the x64 platform error. On 32 bit, i've got no such problem.
File permissons are also OK, fresh player.wad is created if it does not exist and it is r/w'able by an user running the game.
Just before ncurses takes over the terminal, following message is printed out:
/lib64/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by ./doomrl)

Same here, OpenSuSE 11.3, x64.
I did copy old player.wad from 0.9.9.4. It doesn't work with a fresh install, however.
