why would a general fight himself

seriously, he would know to just send men with combat shotguns at you until you die
And because of that, you'd want to A) blow up the base, B) kill everyone, cornering him in the process, and confronting him (and his combat ability equivalent to a Former Human), or C) sending the entire base to hell (literally), like Phobos.

I'd hate to waste rockets just to widen the doors I couldn't fit through...

Actually, he meant that the final enemy of the evil path, not you, shall be riding some sort of mech armour, you know, like the boss of the Predator path in AvP2. You, the Champion of Hell, would still have to fight on foot. :P
Blast.

Even after a reread, I don't think I'd support mechs in the game at all. This makes me want to crack open the novelizations for ideas on what Earth's side should look like.

Subject explains most of it. After finding the Assault Shotgun, I thought I could get away with abandoning my pistol focus.

Highlight of the run was walking through a door to find the first HellKnight of the game in my face. While unloading my Shotgun and pistol in his face, he used a medpack (probably Large). Deciding that my current health level was too low to waste time reloading, I punched him in the face and was relieved to see him go down. The whole encounter made for one hell of an "Oh Shit!" moment.

Playing as "Evil" would be pretty cool. Didn't exactly picture it like that though, lol. A mech would be somewhat out of place.

Also here's a challenge i could think of.

Angel of Phasing

At the start of the game the 2 small med-pack are replaced with 2 phase device and the other 2 small med-pack are at the entrence of phobo surface. There's is a small chance that you can get phased for no reason which can be annoying. 25% of the small med-packs becoming phase device and 10% of the large med-pack becoming homing phase device at the start of the level and there are teleporters at every level and more of them and more phase device and homing phase device are generated. Former captains and commandos have a phase device on them. Hellspawns(including the Cyberdemon but not JC and AOD) can phase around the level once and items can phase randomly across the level.
I'd imagine it'd be more of a challenge/frustration by replacing phase devices altogether with a small percentage chance (like 1%) of random phasing while moving and a larger chance of it happening when hit in combat (like 25%). On harder modes, your shots would have a chance of "phasing through" your targets (including walls), causing no harm to them while hitting whatever is behind them.
