Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.7G][WinXP] Game stops
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:01 »
I also have this issue with an XP machine when running graphical mode. It works fine for a minute or two, then begins to hang for 5 - 15 seconds between each turn. 32 bit, Radeon X1600, Athlon 64 3200+. German keyboard as well, but changing the keyboard settings does not appear to have any effect. Performance logs show the CPU spiking to 100% when this freeze happens.

Okay, it looks like the save file thing was just a one-off, I can't repeat it. Save games are working correctly.

And I believe I have found the issue - software rendering. Apparently, the card's drivers aren't being used because the libgl1-mesa-dri package decided to drop the files I require for this card in the latest versions. Wonderful.

I hate Linux.

Addendum: Now I don't know what it could be. After much fumbling, I installed the correct drivers, added my account to the video group and (apparently) have got the card working with the correct driver. DoomRL still does not work past checking the resolution. Any ideas?

It's...pretty bad.

Screen resolution is 1024 x 768.
mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+
S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] (Jesus.)
As for drivers, the xserver-xorg-video-savage/S3 Virge packages are installed.

Are there minimum system requirements for the graphical mode?

Addendum: Save files that are created seem to be corrupt as well:

<TDoom//0> Save file corrupted! Error while loading : Access violation

I don't think this is the same issue. I don't see anything, it crashes before displaying the title screen. The music plays perfectly in console mode, but I've been disabling the sound engine in config just in case anyway.

I'm not sure if this is related - If I run DoomRL from its directory in a terminal, it works. However, setting the config file option to console and clicking the DoomRL executable does not work.

When trying to run it in graphical mode, this is the log.txt output. (The error.log is the same as before.)

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on an old laptop, I've installed sdl, sdl_image, sdl_mixer, timidity, libpng, libsmpeg, etc. The scripts that come with the installation work - but only in console mode. The error log shows this:

Timestamp   : 24-3-13 03:02:43
Error level : FATAL EXCEPTION
Message     : Fatal exception encountered

An unhandled exception occurred at $080D428A :

I don't normally use Linux, so it's entirely possible that I'm doing something wrong.

I don't really understand how to get this badge. I get slaughtered within the first five levels every time I try. I'm guessing that you're supposed to shoot enemies until they're damaged enough for an easy punch-kill, but I find it difficult to avoid accidentally killing them with bullets. So, any advice for this badge with regards to trait progression or general strategy? I giftdrop, hide behind corners and rest-wait. Is Vampyre the best choice for this run? I'm not sure whether Malicious Blades makes you attack with your knife if you only have one in your offhand, I've never used it. Should any special levels be completed?

The only explanation I can think of is that 2Deviations is some sort of robot solely designed to annihilate DoomRL.

Any advice on getting the Angelic Badge? I can't figure out how to avoid taking damage when there is practically no cover. There are just so many damned enemies, and the Arch-Viles hang so far back...

Angel of Max Carnage or a double-sniper nuclear plasma rifle/ammochain plasma rifle and just fire blindly at every row on the map until the viles are dead? Or maybe use a napalm launcher to make only a single route accessible? Last time, I tried to homing phase to the nuclear BFG and use it for corpse clearing. Unfortunately, there were commandos and arachnatrons surrounding it and I died the turn I phased.
