Shotgun damage drops off quite a lot with distance, and with Cybie's armour (and the fact that armour blocks twice as much damage from shells) it's quite possible to run out if you're keeping your distance. There's nothing better than dancing around him just outside melee range and unloading double shotgun into his face, but dodgemaster is a must for that kind of tactic.

Pseudoedit: I see you did have dodgemaster - you should have kept at minimum range throughout the fight. With dodgemaster, when you move, the first projectile of every monster will target the square you were standing on before you moved, so if you move around him, Cybie can't really hit you (except for spalsh damage if you are standing in front of a pillar). All you need to do is move until he shoot, and then you are free to shoot at him until you see the message (and hear the sound) that he reloads his rocket launcher. Until that happens, he can't hurt you (except in melee), so you are safe. Once he reloads, just move around some more until he wastes his shot. Repeat. With a bit of practice, you'll be able to take him down without taking any damage soon.

The other basic strategy for taking him down is going melee, getting berserk, and just cutting him up with a chainsaw. The Berserker trait is a must in that case though.

It seemed like whenever I stopped to take a shot at him, he would blast me with a rocket. But now I'll know what to do for next time.

Good on you for trial and error I suppose. I guess you might know this now but any fire/blood/hatred skulls requires corpses to do anything.

I was trying anything at that point. I knew there weren't any corpses but I thought I would use it anyway. They don't call it a last ditch effort for nothing. :)

Discussion / Re: Tiles or ASCII?
« on: August 01, 2013, 09:06 »
Being rather new around here, I prefer the graphics over ASCII. It was the graphics that initially brought me here from a Youtuber known as Phreakidee. They are very well-done and I'll continue to use them.

3
Be careful with the fireproof armour though - while it increases your fire resistance, melee damage actually hurts more. And Cybie hits hard if you're not zerked. In any case, when it comes to shotguns, there's rarely such a thing as too much ammo.

Maybe that was it. Either way, I kind of knew I was dead anyway. I didn't think I would run out of ammo either, having like 200 shotgun shells or so, but it ended up happening. I had a box full of shells and 100 rounds on me.

4
So I reached good ol' Uncle Cybie again, and this time he stomped me. I ran out of ammo for my shotguns and since he was almost dead, I could punch him to death! Well, I was wrong...

I will say Fireproof Red Armor is one of the best inventions created by man, and I was only taking about 5% of damage from the rockets. Pretty nifty.

Post Mortem / Re: My first Cyberdemon encounter
« on: July 31, 2013, 08:33 »
I didn't know about the Mortem tags, so I do apologize about that. I'll remember for next time.

The thing was is that I was having some bad luck. Cybie was hitting me consistently with his rockets, and I panicked. My Fireproof Blue Armor took some serious damage from the Demios Lab, so I was trying to find armor scraps to fix it up. I would have made Fireproof Red, but the Red you get in the Anomaly didn't survive the assault of Lost Souls, so I tried to make things work with the next best thing I had.

I was trying to run and gun, but I'm still relatively new at getting far in DoomRL. I was trying to hide behind those small corners in the Lab, trying to get corner shots off at them but they ended up going through two of the Blue Armors I found. I was also fighting two at the same time. I should have used the 'look' key to focus one down before taking on the other, but its in the past now.

I also have a tendency to horde things in games because, well, you never know when you'll need those four envirosuits or get another. :) I thought I only had two at the time, huh.

Discussion / Re: Umm, so...

I know you want to keep it. I know that there'll be that megasphere or ammo-chain on the next level. For sure. Definitely. Or maybe there won't. It's the RNG that loves you or hates you. But is it?

Just use the damn medipack. At least you won't die that particular action. Even if there's not more where that came from, you're not dead. That action anyway. Horde all you can for your particular character build, but don't die next action. Use anything and everything in your inventory so that you don't.

Sometimes, you won't get that option because you're taking too much damage at once and it is a waste of an action. I remember hording large medipacks from one of my AoSG runs only to be wiped out by a single Arachnoid. That plasma burst sucks when every single one connects, destroying your armor.

I was doing pretty good with Angel of Shotgunnery, until I stumbled into Demios Lab and found out the Plasmatic Double Barreled Shotgun destroys cover. I had about 8 large medkits but used them all up due to the Shamblers hitting me constantly and teleporting all over the place. I did prevail, but taking on the Cyberdemon with zero dodge?! F-that. Managed to survive and hide for about 1000 turns until he fed me yet another rocket.

Discussion / Re: 3d Art Inspired by DoomRL
« on: July 29, 2013, 16:50 »
Shinji here,

I was able to finish my interpretation of Mech__Warrior's idea this week, and am now passing the result on to all of you.

I hope everyone likes it, and Mech__Warrior, I hope I was able to do your thoughts justice.

It's close. :) I imagined him carrying the shotgun in one hand and his face bloodied from battle, but what you did is just as good. Sorry I haven't been around in a while to provide any input, but things got pretty crazy for me.

Mech__Warrior,

After re-reading your discription, I've decided to see if I can do the idea justice.  I hope that what I can come up with will be to your expectations.

Shinji.

All right, that would be pretty cool to see. I'm sorry I left for so long, I had to move back to college and the like. I do like the render that you posted more recently, reminds me a lot of Doom 3 when you get the BFG 9000 in there and test the alternate fire. :) I am kind of eager to see what you come up with.

I can describe it quite well, but what I try to create on the art side of things just doesn't look the way I want it.

Basically, I see the Doom guy, helmet off and completely beat up. You can tell he's fought his way through the hordes of demons with how bruised and cut up he is, certain parts of his armor has been torn open along with scratches on his arms. He's holding a shotgun in one hand and his other hand has nothing. He's exhausted, but knows he must soldier on, thus is his task. He may win, he may not, but one thing is for sure; he won't stop fighting.

Bah, I wish I had some actual art talent because I'd be able to draw what I had in mind for a while or whenever I hear the Doom RL title music.

12
I voted Hey, Not Too Rough because I've been playing this game for about a week. I've tried Ultra Violence and gotten my ass handed to me on the second level a few times, and Hurt Me Plenty is kind of an in-between. I'd like to beat the game first before moving on to the other difficulties.

13
Well, I've had a few things that just screwed me up.

The first was when I first visited the City of Skulls on Hey, Not Too Rough. I'm still new to playing, but I thought 'This is the furthest I've gotten so far, this shouldn't be too bad.' Well, when you get swarmed, I didn't know what to do. I first thought of the BFG 9000 I got at the Halls of Carnage but then assumed the splash damage would kill me. I then thought my Trigun would do the trick since on the wiki, it said I nuke the level and only lose 5 HP permanently. Well, what it neglected to tell me is that it was a nuke regardless of a scant 5 hp and killed me anyway. I then consulted the wiki again and learned that trick about the BFG, then held my face for a bit.

The second time was, again, the City of Skulls. Having learned since last time, I thought I could do it again but I realized the missile launcher isn't the best for up close fighting, neither is the Acid Launcher. Long story short, I did eventually beat that level with 1 % left, and got a Blood Skull. I thought it would make me berserk and help recoup the pain I endured of almost dying. I went down the stairs and I'm surrounded by acid, and there's an Arachnoid just sitting there. I know he spotted me, and I only have seconds to figure out what weapon to use...But like Han, he shot first...

I neglected to include my first encounter breaking open The Wall...Eeesh, at least I died quick.
