Post Mortem / [0.9.1|E|Sc|YAAM] Gunslingin' Tourist
« on: June 10, 2020, 05:50 »
It was a while since I last played a little JH, and instead of hunting down those Badges, I thought I'd just so something a little more... touristy in nature, you know, just for fun.

I had tried with ye olde Marine, but kept dying stupidly, until I went back to my first love, Gunslinger.

Man was it a blast!

I got an early AV3 9m pistol that had EMP/frenzy powers, and an AV2 9mm pistol that had vampiric/bleed powers.  I wouldn't say it was a breeze, but it was definitely a fun romp.  Somewhere in the early mid-game I got hold of an AV2 red armour that had camo and silent shot(?), and I just modded it up with a Bulk mod to extend its life.

That AV2 chainsaw had a monstrous 100 piercing damage and +50% critical damage (or something), but it was mostly for the lulz.  It replaced another PB-modded chainsaw I picked up near Io, and I took Gun Hoarder just so I could pick it up.  Part of the reason was that I was running out of 9mm, and took Scavenger late.  I began Europa with nearly 6 stacks of 9mm, and ended with about 1 stack.  Pretty scary, even for Easy.

Gun Kata + Dash is an amazing combination -- running away while auto-firing, yes please!

Not sure why I ended up with a whopping 359 out of 349 kills... is this to do with the mobs from the Summoner?  I did remember that when I was in Black Site Vaults, I had some surprise spawns of various exalted stuff that MGK+Das made short work of.

The summoner fight was straightforward -- I just lobbed 3 gas grenades and 1 frag grenade for fun.  As you can tell, I was never hurting for health, and my dual pistols won the day for me.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just one more suggestion though: when the mortem is generated, could we also output the special traits/properties for all those advanced equipment?  I think it's way cooler to share what the RNG giveth at the end of a run.

Edit: Added the log file in case anyone wants to investigate the "impossible" kill count.

...but I had a valid excuse!  I just wanted to unlock AoMr!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I started on this to unlock AoMr, and died on Io Lv1 the first time I made good headway.  I blamed it on waiting a tad too long on my laptop which had low frame rates, causing an unintentional death.  This run was started on a much older machine that was still running Windows 7, but had a much beefier GTX 1080 (a bit overkill, I know).

I was killing almost everything in Europa, starting with the autorifle before quickly switching over to the 7.62mm assault rifle.  An early power mod was immediately applied to it, and I stocked up on some rockets for my rocket launcher as part of plan B, which I nearly had to enact.  I found an early blue armour, and hung on to it for dear life until I found my first red armour, which I power-modded as well.

After reaching Io, I just started to stair dove as much as I could.  I only had 2 stacks of 7.62mm ammo at the beginning of Io, and by the time I reached the Gateway, I was down to less than one stack.  On hindsight, next time I will load up on 3 stacks of ammo instead -- this is something to think about for the future when I have the guts to try out AoLT.

My traits progression were centred around getting decent bang-for-the-buck for each firing cycle, and then prioritising survivability.  Ironically, my progression meant that I could take the ASSASSINATE master trait, but since I wasn't doing melee, I ended up going master-less.

Reaching the Summoner was harrowing.  As I said earlier, at the last level of Beyond before facing the Summoner, I found that I had zero 7.62mm rounds.  A lucky kill of some mobs before hitting the portal replenished my ammo up to almost a stack.  My P-modded red armour was down to like 20+% durability.  I made the switch to the blue armour at the starting island at the Gateway.

I started by walking carefully towards the Summoner, aim, and fire a couple of times at the Summoner ignoring everything else before the latter teleported off.  At that point, I would fire off a phase device, and somehow end up on the island where the Summoner was supposed to be.  Rinse and repeat.

That the phase device put me on the correct island of the Summoner is also a pleasant surprise -- was this an intended mechanic, or just something for Easy difficulty, or that I'm just plain lucky?  I'm just curious -- am definitely not going to question it!

Getting both the Icarus Ribbon and Untouchable Ribbon was a pleasant surprise.  That was definitely not what I had in mind.

I'm no Tormuse, and given the lack of time I have these days, I'll just take any win as a... win.  Even on wimpy-ass Easy.

On another note, now that I'm playing like a filthy casual, I think the modifiers like "Speedloader 1", "Point Blank 1" etc should have some way of referencing their properties in-game, probably as a discoverable thing.  Maybe not right now because these things are still in flux, but having a list of them with their in-game text like some kind of in-game encyclopaedia might be good to have.  I'm seeing this as a way of helping the casual player come back to it and remembering the glorious past.

While we are on that, will we ever have mortems auto-archived in-game on the high-score list so that past glories can be revisited?

Post Mortem / [0.8.8b|M|AoC|Ma|YAVP] Rockets... everywhere!
« on: February 15, 2020, 02:26 »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think I should learn to read the descriptions a bit more.  I thought this was going to be similar to something from the past, but to my amazement it was basically Rockets ho!.  Everyone gets a rocket to the face!

I've hardly ever used the Rocket Launcher in my normal games, so I'd like to think of AoC as a great way of introducing Rocket Launcher mechanics.  I've learnt quickly to not take on too many armoured foes because the RL is basically nerfed.

This is just a bog-standard wussy-ass run at Medium difficulty, relying on Reload Dance and Incoming! to help with offense and defense respectively.  The description of the RL says it is Slash damage, but Incoming! seems to mitigate explosions, so I'm not even sure if taking Incoming! was helping me protect myself against my own rocket fire (I sure hope it does).

The summoner fight was aided greatly by the phase devices -- I realised that with the RL, there was no point trying to plink off the summoned foes and it was better to concentrate fire on the Summoner itself.  I wasn't going for a YAAM, just looking to notch off a win on Medium for myself.

A very fun challenge mode for sure!  Maybe next time I will be less wussy and try for a Conqueror type run... on Medium.  But not on AoC.  =)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have not won a single game of JH, and I was getting sick of that.  So I wussed out and got on Easy, and went forth with Gunslinger, the build that I've always enjoyed playing back in DRL.

I could've had my first win yesterday (had two ADV 9mm Pistols, one of which had Ignite and Cold on it!), but in a rash to shoot fast, I forgot to heal and got YASD.  Today, I finally had my first win, and can sleep better at night knowing that I have won one game on JH (despite it being Easy).

Question: How does a weapon with both Ignite and Cold work?  Ignite was intrinsic to the weapon, while Cold was from a mod -- do they nullify their effects, stack on top, or only the last one applied works?  I think I only saw Frozen status applied on the mobs, but I could be mistaken.

I'm not going to discuss my "tactics" because I'm playing on Easy like a scrub, and well, I don't have the kind of time I used to have 10 years go to try all kinds of crazy things.  =)

Side point though: maybe in the next update, we can have the progression of traits chosen in the mortem like how we used to have in DRL.  That way, it makes it easier for folks to learn play styles and what-not.  I also liked the old screenshot of the final screen as a way of memorialising the win/death, but that can be something for the [far] future.

Salutations!  It has been nearly 1429 days since we first committed genocide on the ChaosForge Forums.

Today, I did what the God Hand had done some 4 years go.  Except by hand.  The spam situation was becoming unbearable, and the site was also getting a little... slow.

Like before, all accounts with 0 posts that are regular members (not supporters or team members) have been obliterated.  If you've just joined us in the past few days, I apologise, and like what Kornel said before, please feel free to register again!

Have a good 2015 ahead.

Bug Reports / PSA: You can move diagonally
« on: September 22, 2014, 16:21 »
Another PSA.  Despite how the tiles and ASCII art looks, DoomGuy can actually move diagonally and squeeze through those itty-bitty corner spaces of walls.  I mean that is possible to go from ##.

using diagonal movements.  Best part is that you don't even need to drop any of DoomGuy's gear to do so, unlike say NetHack.

Bug Reports / PSA: Junk on the Map
« on: February 10, 2014, 19:13 »
I'd never thought I had to be the one to post this public service announcement, but here it is anyway.

There has been recent reports of crashes/errors from spawning too many items and/or teleporting enemies not having a place to land on.  This is related to the engine limit of being clueless on how to handle the case where there's no free tile to place said item/enemy.

We'll figure out how to fix this for 0.9.9.8.  It's an engine limitation that was not looked into deeply before, but it seems that now's the time to address it.

Meanwhile, please be a civil-minded DoomGuy and pick up your trash (items), and leave some space for enemies to teleport to if you are using lava/acid spewing weapons.

--------------------------------------------------------------
So uh... the last time I played Ao100 was a good long time ago, and since I told myself that I shouldn't play on difficulties less than HMP, here it is!  Ao100 on HMP.

I had wanted to do an MSs run like the last time, but I kept running into a wall at floor 14.  I just kept dying there; it seemed as though I wasn't scaling up my damage enough or something.  So I got annoyed.

But then I rememberd the MCe build I used for my HMP YAAM run.  It was a very successful build, relying mostly on the Gatling Gun as the primary weapon until the last 9 floors where I just spammed plasma everywhere.  I'll extract out that build and the one I used here and place them in alignment:

  SoB->SoB->Int->EE->TH->MCe->SoB->Int->EE ->TH->Fin->

  Int->SoB->SoB->EE->TH->MCe->Int->Fin->Fin->WK->WK ->SoB->SoB->SoB->Fin->HR->HR->HR->DM->TH->Iro->

Notice that the first 6 traits up to MCe were more or less the same, except for that initial swap of Int and SoB.  I was blessed with an early Combat Shotgun, which helped immensely as I was slowly building up my resources and traits to run the MCe MOAR DAKKA build.  Unfortunately, Bulk mods were in scarce supply, while I had stashed away some early Agility and Technical mods in preparation for the Hyperblaster, the slightly more ammo efficient version of the plasma rifle.

But I had to bide my time a little.  Scouts require slightly more set up to get 2xWK, and I had to take 2xInt prior to that to ensure that there are no surprises for me.  That explains the relatively early assembly of the Hyperblaster compared to the Gatling Gun.

If I was under the impression that ammo consumption was "cheap" in the MCe build on HMP, I was quickly proven wrong on Ao100 HMP.  I was always on the verge of running out of ammunition, be it 10mm or power cells.  If not for that super modded minigun (439 magazine size), I would have been annihilated a long time ago.  My P-modded Gatling Gun was, together with 5xSoB, sufficiently strong to take on the later mobs -- almost everything went down in two volleys.  I didn't use the super modded minigun for mainstream firing duties because of the whole ammo shortage problem -- using 2 more bullets per volley added up really really quickly in the long run.

I played relatively conscientiously up till 2xWK, after which I started to slack off.  By the time I was taking HR and DM, I was practically getting bored.  Rev-Vile packs were a dime a dozen, and Man-Vile packs were just as ubiquitous.  Barons were a joke under the volleys, and in between juggling the use of either the Hyperblaster or the Gatling Gun (depending on which ammo had more stock on the level) and the ABP-modded red armour and Cerebus Boots, it was starting to become a cakewalk.

Until floor 98.  OMFG.

Shambler cave!  I was soooooooo glad that I had an Invulnerability Sphere that I had snagged prior to entering the level.  That invulnerability bought me precious turns in which I spammed all the weapons I had.  Bloody Shamblers kept on teleporting next to me, and it was just utter chaos for a good while.

Then my invulnerability ran out.  And I had only 2 large med packs.  Fuck.

I teleported using a phase device -- it helped a little but not much.  Shamblers are really terrible to take on in open areas -- they can just swarm you and you will die, ABP-red armour notwithstanding.  I snuck into a corridor and picked them off as much as I could.  By the time I was done, I was down to like 1 stack of 10mm and maybe 2 stacks of power cells.  There was a vault of Cacodemons that was left, but I noped my way out of the level.  I just wanted a Ao100 win damnit, not be yet another dead hero.

Cerberus boots are really ridiculous.  They are so ridiculous that I totally forgo the use of Nyarlaptotep's boots, something that I rarely do.  Apart from the Hell Staff, I didn't really use much of the uniques that I had found on this centurial trip.  The last 10 floors were probably the most exciting, and more than made up for the rather lackluster middle floors that I had to grind through.  Power cells and 10mm get chewed up at an astonishing rate when dealing with many hard-to-kill Vile groups -- this is something that is not so apparent in a normal 24-level run through.

And like the title suggests, I got really bored at 100 levels.  How the hell does one slog through 666?

That one save?  I had to move computers from the office (ahem) to my home one.

Meanwhile, merry Christmas.  =)

--------------------------------------------------------------
Never really played an MCe build before, so here's the first one from last night.  I've not actually YAAM-ed in 0.9.9.7 -- I wanted to do a YAAM/Conqueror run, but was too lazy to do the routing and planning before hand (I'm not as good as the rest here that I can just wing it and succeed).

The first two failed runs before this, I began with Int, but soon found that it was a waste of the first free trait.  Since I wasn't doing pistols nor was I going to rely on shotguns, the only sensible starting trait was SoB.  And it worked quite well.  I picked EE instead of TH to save a bit on 10mm ammo, before cranking up the DPS while trying maintaining ammo efficiency.  This explains the progression of SoB->Int->EE before the next TH, where it was almost time to fight the Spider Mastermind.

Equipment-wise, I like the gatling gun.  It was one of the two remaining basic assemblies that I have not made (the other was the ballistic armour, where I used a quick AoHu to construct and get the Technician Gold Badge), and part of the reason why I didn't build it was that I rarely played rapid-fire/chain-fire builds.  I managed to find the Jackal, but traded it in for a high-powered chaingun as my alt-weapon -- my traits synergised more with MOAR DAKKA than pin-point precision strikes, and since I was still lugging a rocket launcher at that time, didn't really need the Jackal for wall-busting capabilities.

The main attack strategy was to lead with the gatling gun, emptying volley after volley of 10mm lead into the enemies.  And when I run out with the mob still standing, take a 1.0s swap to the high-powered chaingun to take it out (still cheaper than the horrible reload time of 2.7+ s).

The minigun was a free ammo chain for me -- I used it mostly to save one slot of 10mm ammo.  That A-mod was slapped on it in case I get caught in a vulnerable position while trying to "reload my ammochain" and had to do a quick fire -- using the minigun is very wasteful, especially on the later stages when the TH kicked in and the mobs requiring more lead pumped into them before dying.

I had originally modded a plasma rifle with an A-mod, but I think I ditched it in favour of a plasma rifle with a T-mod once I got 2xEE.  As you can tell from the mortem, I think I might have hoarded too much power cells -- I entered Hell with only 2 stacks of 10mm, but had a large enough stash of power cells that for the last 3 or 4 levels, I was just spamming plasma everywhere.  I swear that MAc doesn't give one enough sensing on just how much ammo is needed for plasma-ing the higher level mobs to death.

Again on inventory, say what you want, but P-modded red armour is still ridiculous.  I don't really care about the fire resistance that much (never had a good feel for them) but that 6 points of damage taken off post resistance makes a lot of difference.  I think I tanked the Phobos Anomaly with precisely that, as well as the Cyberdemon fight, where I ended up eating more rocket than I wanted due to a lack of DM, common sense and reloading time.

As for the two levels where I was targeted for extermination, I will say this:
Quote from: Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller
We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them.
Nothing quite as fun as two minutes of killing everything that moves with the gatling gun.

I'll play more on HMP before "graduating" to UV.  The goal is to complete each Angel at least once on HMP.

I did my AoB run a long time ago, got my Berserker series of Badges, but missed out on the Longinus Gold Badge (how could I?!).  So I brilliantly decided to Sereg it up and attempted AoB+AoOC to grab the Longinus.  35 attempts later (all in one day I might add), my Longinus Gold Badge was secured and I felt like the King of The World!

Then I charged into the Mortuary.  I was zerked or zerking -- I cleared the right side relatively easily with my Medical Powerarmor for support.  As I made my way to the left though, I got smacked about like a human pinball, lost the defensive and healing powers of the Medical Powerarmor, and died with a large med-pack in my inventory.

Over-confidence indeed!

Heheheh, where to start?  Alright, I've been working on a MGK-based AoMr run for a while, not a whole lot of games, but enough to feel annoyed.  I tried dual Speedloaders before, but they weren't powerful enough.  Dual high-powered pistols seemed to do the job, but without 3xSoG and/or MGK, they were still prone to being insufficient (requiring a reload somewhere between volleys).  But Deimos lab changed the game -- I found a Combat Pistol there, together with a Bulk mod and a Power mod.  Unfortunately, I had just assembled a high-powered pistol before finding the Combat Pistol, a mistake since I've not really played the Deimos Lab before.  So it took a while before I could assemble a high-powered Combat Pistol.

I tried to visit the Abyssal Plains, but it was too Abyssal for a Marksman en route to MGK -- the lack of cover and long reload times between volleys made it too hard to fight my way through.  I had a small stack of Homing Phase Devices that I used to get myself out, and that was the basic premise for the rest of the game after the Spider's Lair, which I conquered with Invulnerability Spheres.  After getting MGK, I went for Int instead of Fin, and spent the rest of the game Int-scouting for power-ups while charging for the stairs.  That turned out well because there were just so many Invulnerability Spheres about!  The Spidey fight was almost trivial due to the invulnerability.

All in all, this run felt more RNG-blessed than others.

Funny how it took me 8 tries on HMP after playing the Elevator of Dimensions mod to get my Strongman Gold.

Inspired by 2birds1stone's Strongman Gold run, I decided to try my hand at this.  My original idea was to tank it out with an MVm sort of path, but that successful mortem made me reconsider that approach and I decided to do a MBm-style build instead.  Bru->Bru->Ber->Bru is a very strong start, especially when armed with Chainsword that was easily built with an early P-mod find and B-mod find.  There were three uniques that were spawned in this run, but I wisely did not tour the map to look for them.  The Red Armour is not something that I would wear normally, but given that we have a slight speed boost from the Scout class (+10%), the small boost of speed for a late A-modded Protective Boots (+10%), and the late HR (part of the progression towards MBm), we end up with a speed that is roughly equivalent to a regular "naked" marine.

Fire resistance was very important at the late levels.  It allowed me to eat up one Mancubus shot as I charge in to chainsword it up.  I was afraid of the Cybie fight, but I made it through all thanks to the Red Armour and lots of 'zerking.  The final fight with Spidey was edgy but I wasn't really in any danger of an early death, since I went in fully 'zerked and with 3xBru to deal really really large amounts of pain.

Most of the earlier failed attempts were from early deaths when going mano-a-mano with the early mobs when I had only Bru available.  Once Bru->Bru->Ber was in place though, I started to really shine.

And so, that's the Strongman Gold badge.  I suppose if I dropped the Combat Knife and thus aim for the Strongman Platinum, I would probably have to die at least 4 times as much before I can even reach Spidey for a final showdown.  But Platinum hunting is for another time.  =)
