...or how the world was changed.

Well, well, about time. Doom the Roguelike 0.9.9.5 BETA is now out to donators, but you should have realized that by just reading the header here, so before I go into details, allow me to start with something related: GOOD FOLK OF CHAOSFORGE! Bid welcome to a new co-developer of Chaosforge games, noble and renowned Game_Hunter. He joined Almighty Kornel and tehtmi in their work, and together, the world will be theirs, in due time, of course.

But in the meantime, they managed to create this new wonderful, beautiful beta. Why wonderful and beautiful? Let us just say that it is groundbreaking release, as fitting for a .9.9.5 version. And reasons for it? Well. See for yourself, for I am going to allow facts to speak over an overly elaborate PR crap.

Bugfixes
Apart from creating a huge number of changes-related bugs, this version gives us a few neat fixes already. First of all: difficult medals give you easier medals of the same series if you haven't already received them, which is something many wanted for a long time now. Second off: trying to fire with not enough (but non-zero) ammo is now instant. One less weirdness of the engine to worry about now. Neat. And, apart from that, a bunch of other minor fixes (mostly challenge) related was introduced, but them you will have to see for yourself.

New Features
And now....
  • MAJOR RESTRUCTURING OF THE GAME! - instead of simple progressing through Phobos Base into Phobos Hell, now we have something much truer to the source material: three episodes - Phobos Base, Tower of Babel and Dis, each culminating with a climatic boss encounter!
  • New final boss! Yeah, that is right: good ol' Cybbie will no longer be the one that capstones the game. Something more monstrous will be there, waiting for you!
  • New AIs! As of now, mancubi and arch-viles received a cool new AI, and as the new betas shall appear, all creatures will receive a similiar upgrade.
  • Last but not least, the long awaited nerf to the the much maligned Arch-Viles is here. You wanted, you have it now. After like a five years or so.
  • Tweaks of special level spawning, to go along with new level structure.

So... huge, huge things, as you can clearly see. Especially the nerf. Things worth seeing, worth playing. DoomRL changes, DoomRL evolves. And that is but the first step. And if you can't stand the wait and the teasers, maybe consider donating?

Stay tuned for more information, they should appearing shortly.

I think I forgot to mention the graphical version beta... damm it.

Graveyard / Ride Across The River IC

You still could not get used to the fact that the FTL drive just hummed when engaged, instead of roaring as it used to before Mai installed her latest upgrades. Still, it did make your life much more comfortable - though the the attempts to go to sleep still failed. So, having nothing better to do (unless you really wanted to watch that asari flick Mai was so ecstatic about) you just replayed the message from your current employer.

'Three weeks ago, my idiot's brother daughter was kidnapped by a band of ascended thugs who apparently believed that they could use her to blackmail me. As if I'd care for some asari.'

After hearing those words, you did not even have to look at the holo to see the face of the turian businessman before your eyes. He sounded just so palvean. Besides, you knew his voice and face from before. Trak Na'Qun was his name, and he was... well, an owner of a small, but well-prospering company and one of the most vocal nationalists out there in the Hierarchy.

'But of course I must not allow them to go unpunished for their arrogance. And thankfully, that so called 'mercenaries' proved to be as sloppy as my brother's security, and we have managed to track them down to a system in Terminus Systems. I want you' his tone was visibly used to giving orders 'to go there, find them, and kill them all. Every single of them is to get a bullet to the head, no matter if they are women, children or children with women. No one dares to mess with me. Especially not some thugs from Omega. And quite frankly, I want nothing more. If that asari girl lives, all the better, but their deaths come first. Of course, I will pay you extra for her being alive. But you will have to deliver her to me personally, because she has to learn a few things before I even start considering her a member of my family again. And you have my permission to do whatever you want with her as long as you get her to me alive and not crippled. I have no use for cripples. Ah, and it goes without mentioning that if any details of this mission ever make their way to the extranet, you both are facing a certain death. I will not allow myself to be disgraced!'

The message ended with that cheerful note. Enclosed, there were coordinates of a star system in Terminus, a file on that asari kidnapee and an another one on the mercenaries responsible. And, of course, information on the payment. One hundred and fifty thousands credits plus twenty five thousand extra for the girl being rescued alive and delivered to the given location.

'He is a kind of dick, is not he?'

You turned around to see Mai standing in the doorway, yawning and flexing her blue-skinned limbs. She had it good, she had no problems sleeping with a FTL on.

Graveyard / Ride Across The River - Mass Effect PbF - OOC
« on: August 17, 2011, 13:03 »
Welcome to the OOC thread for a Mass Effect game of Traveller RPG.

For now, there are two players here:
-Almighty Epyon
-Xander_Morhaime

For the curious: the game is about the (mis)adventures of a small band of a guns-for-hire in the Terminus Systems, where all is possible and a bullet to the head is most likely. Timeline-wise, it is set slightly after the events of Mass Effect 2, though it does not affect the setting much.

That is the premise, anyway. I have two players already, though I'd be willing to accept one or two more, so, any volunteers?

And finally, character creation guidelines:
- Basic character creation as per Traveller core rulebook, material from other books mostly allowed, as long as you reference it. No limit to the number of terms, though I would ask for characters that do have a reason for freelanching as mercenaries.
- Council Space races allowed, for character creation guidelines for non-humans, ping me via Private Messages so that we can work out details.
- No biotics, please.

That is all for now, more details will follow if necessary.

It is that time again! After few long months of deathly stillness, Chaosforge lunges back to life: and its life is epitomised by newest marvel from our beloved Majesty hands: Doom The Roguelike 0.9.9.4 BETA 1. This version will bring a number of new features, never seen before, and it will shake the foundation of earth and sky, and when it is released, doom will rain from heavens upon the heathen...

So convert quickly, make a donation and observe the cool new features as they are added.

And if you can't: here is the run-down on what is new so far.

Sidenote: interestingly, this is one of the stablest betas ever seen by the betatesters, and almost entirely free of bugs.

Bugfixes
Let us see: two bugs that were visible and prominent (Armory level being destroyable, and Armory being completed without Shambler biting the dust) -  squashed.
One very little known, yet ancient bug (armor and player name colors at extreme value starting to turn into weirdest of colors) - squashed.
Number of bugs so insanely obscure that nobody ever knew of them - squashed.
Yes, bug-cleansing of the game is proceeding as planned.

New Features
And again, a number of features you might be interested in:
  • Ammo packs, as suggested in RFE forums.
  • Three new level events!
  • Items on explored squares are now visible - and while this change is still experimental, it was met with wide acclaim among testers.
  • Bridges are now (finally, I'd say) guaranteed to spawn on rivers. So fear not their rushing sound. Which is not actually yet implemented.
  • A few more cosmetic changes - including higher number of Pain Elemental spawns and Cyberdemon being immune to lava/acid.

So far, the changes has not been that numerous, right? But wait! There is more to come, and this more will be earthshaking! Just wait until His Majesty Kornel, Almighty Forgemaster puts, for example, character classes upon his anvil and adds them!

And if you want to see this changes before anyone else, seriously, appreciate his omnipotence and donate!

Requests For Features / New level event ideas
« on: May 04, 2011, 14:41 »
.9.9.3 brought us a number of new, shiny level events that spice the game up. But still, those events are few. Thus, I call you to arms, citizens of the Forge, come here and invent new interesting additions to level generation that will make DoomRL grow in variability, power and shiny.

Yesss... shiny.

And allow me to start:
"You see the back of your head for a moment" - every X turns, every being on this level randomly teleports.
"You can hardly see a thing here" - no level memory on this floor, as per old Angel of Darkness.
"This place seems sturdy" - walls on this level cannot be damaged.

6
...nobody expects Spanish Polish developers!

Well, we can safely said that it was fast. Very fast. In less than a month since the release of .9.9.2 the beta of a new version found its way into the hands of the trusted (that is those who donated, in case you are new to this thread). You did not see that coming, did you?

Well, anyway, DoomRL 0.9.9.3 BETA 1 is currently being tested, and it has already brought huge changes to the very foundations of the goriest and most doomish rougelike that is- but, first thing first.

Bugfixes
Not much of them, a few bugs concerning assemblies has been squish under His mighty coding feet, but apart from that, nothing. Mostly due to the fact that .9.9.2 is still fresh, and bug-reports from it are still flowing in. We can safely guess that He is just waiting for Bug Report forum to swell a bit before embarking on code mistakes expunging crusade!
Any claims of Him being just lazy are considered major heresy and hold a punishment consisting, but not limited to a) tweaking RNG so that it spawns numberless Viles upon the infidels, b) auto da fe, c) boiling alive in vegetable oil. Fear the Inquisition!)

New Features
The new beta brings many, many new exciting things for all DoomRL players, including:
  • Additions and changes to level and room generation- much needed and much neglected. The rooms of DoomRL will never be the same- the fights will be no wrought upon and among mighty crates, rivers of water, magma and acid and so on and so on
  • New level events... I won't spoil. I will just show you:
    Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And that is only the very tip of the iceberg.
  • Raising the level cap to 25- mostly for Ao100 players out there, to have something to grind for on later levels
  • In addition to above, the trait caps behave somewhat different now- don't ask me how, though. Sufficient to say that experienced marines will have rather insane abilities.
  • Two new medals
  • One more inventory slot
  • Last but not least- 4 new exotics, 2 uniques.

As you can see, changes are many- and that is the mere beginning. So stay tuned for next issues of the News... and if you want to see the changes NOW, be kind to Kornel, His Divine Majesty and donate something. He will appreciate it!

Graveyard / Seven Waves - an Exalted PbP [IC]
« on: February 07, 2011, 15:50 »
'Well, the story... I was younger then, somewhat. Still old by your standards, but a bit less than today. And there was a village I was leading in that tumultuous time. Small one. Less than two hundred souls. Life was not really hard, though, the seas were calm and bountiful more often than not, so we flourished. No ill befall us in the first twenty years of my leadership...

...and then, all of sudden, the Heavens rained their wrath on us. Raiders, pirates more cruel than one could even believe. We knew that they were coming, and we knew we could not do a thing to stop them.

But fortune smiled to us. A boy I've sent to Coral brought back with him two lone protectors. True Chosen! Imagine our joy when the boat docked. We greeted them as richly as we could, we rejoiced... I've met them at the shore, welcomed them, saying "Heavens bless..'

***

'...bless you' the old man said, bowing almost to the ground, his beard coiled at his feet. He greeted you alone, before you even could leave the boat.

Journey to that island was long if uneventful, rather boring for people like you. And the place did not really looked that much better. In the distance, the town proper stood, typical western architecture. It looked well-maintained, but that was all that seemed remarkable about it. You could not see other fishing boats, they were likely still at the sea- even though the raiders were near.

The sky above and the ocean behind you seemed peaceful, however, as if oblivious to the slaughter that was surely going to happen on those sands soon. Maybe even sooner than you would want.

'I can't even find words strong enough to express my gratitude for aiding us' the elder continued. There was something odd about him, you could tell. Odd and wrong, as if he did not belong to Creation.

Before him 1966 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 1884 of those were killed.
16 of those were killed by something unknown.
5 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 57 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 4 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
2 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

This suggestion is greatly inspired by wonderful game known to us as Diablo 2 and the concept of runewords. It is meant to add an additional level of depth to the game without making it harder to learn.

1). Arrays

Array would be created via a combination of certain mods (both normal and unique/exotic ones) that 'socketed' together on a given piece of equipment would grant additional effects beside those conferred by them, in a manner similar to aforementioned runewords. Players would be given choice if they want to create an array.

Array would consist from two (basic arrays) up to four mods (complex arrays) of any type (indeed, some array may consist of double mods of the same type). Some arrays would be universal (working on any type of equipment) and some would require specific type or even would work only for a single type of weaponry/armor/whatever else. Arrays would be available on exotic equipment too.

Since currently only one mod can mounted on any given piece of equipment without Whizzkid, I suggest that if the arrays were to be implemented, this cap should be raised to two, so that basic arrays are available for every player, in order to avoid making Whizzkid too powerful.

Array effects stack.

2) Sample Arrays ideas

Basic (2 mods):
Technical + Agility: Speedloader, -25% to all reloading times (weapons only)
Bulk + Power: High Caliber, doubles the effects of all power mods on a weapon, but decreases the magazine capacity by 10% (weapon only)
Power + Technical: Armour-Piercing, changes damage type of the weapon to plasma or normal in case of shotguns (weapons only, useless for plasma weaponry)
Nano + Onyx: Emergency Cybernetic Integration, makes upgraded item impossible to remove, but also automatically regenerates health at the rate of single HP per turn if reduced below 10HP (armor and boots only)
Agility + Sniper: Causes upgraded weapon to ignore armor altogether (weapons only, works for shotguns)

Advanced (3 mods):
Bulk + Power + Power: Sledghammer Rounds. Upgraded weapon knocks hit enemies one tile regardless of damage. Stacks with normal knockback (weapons only)
Technical + Technical + Power: Demolition Rounds. Adds one tile splash to weapon, changes damage type to fire (only non-explosive weapons)
Technical + Technical + Technical: UAC Interface. Gives information about the types of levers, the same way as Intuition does (boots and armor only)
Agility + Power + Bulk: Custom Rifle. Changes chaingun damage to (4d6)x1 and accuracy to +5 (chainguns only)
Nano + Agility + Technical: Instantaneous Nano Manufacture. Changes the rate of nano-pack ammo and armor manufacture to 10/turn (in both ammunition and durability percentage).

Complex Arrays (four mods)
Agility + Power + Power + Bulk: Custom Plasma Rifle. Changes Plasma Rifle damage to (7d6)x1 and accuracy to to +4 (plasma rifle only)
Firestorm + Technical + Bulk + Bulk: Rocket Massacre System. Changes Rocket Launcher magazine to 4 rockets and weapon damage to (6d6)x2, thus changing RL into chain-weapon.
Bulk + Bulk + Bulk + Technical: Portable Nuclear Shelter. Allows the wearer of the armor to survive nuclear explosion, but is destroyed in the process (armor only)

There has not been much information on oncoming (shortly!) DoomRL release, barring some mysterious screenies from Almighty Kornel and like, so it is likely hat you are all starved for information on oncoming features.

Hunger no more, people of ChaosForge, for this is the Official Beta Status Thread, sanctioned by Almighty Kornel himself. Here, you will find freshest, goriest news on how is the newest incarnation of our beloved rogue-like developing, as well as sneak peaks from Ultra-Secret--And-Very-Awesome Graphical version that has recently came into the hands of most trusted testers.

As of now, tester team, consisting of everyone who donated for the welfare of ChaosForge (hint, hint: want to join, want to see the newest version? Be kind to Kornel, and do so yourself!) is testing Beta 2. Here is the run-down of changes.

Bugfixes
Most of the notorious .9.9.1 bugs has been already fixed, and even if a few new bugs slipped through, they will soon be eradicated (though some of the new bugs are quite hilarious, I must admit).
Fixed major bugs, as of now

New Features
Sadly, current betas are aimed at eradicating existing bugs, not adding new features- but that does not mean that none has been added, of course. And,obviously, there are more planned for future incarnation of betas, so allow me to present our current state of knowledge of what is, and what will be in DoomRL.

New features: already added
  • Asynchronous animation, bester presented by following screen by Almighty Kornel Himself
    Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yes, that means that several things will be occurring simultaneously- and it looks flashy. And is awesome. Despite some occasional setbacks.
  • Nightmare Cacodemons!
  • New death messages in mortem file.
  • Expanded history in mortem.
  • Mancubi For Added Fun - you will see. And you will weep in terror.

Features planned for Beta 3

That hardly all, of course. But what future (betas) hold, only Creator knows- though we may rest assured that new batch of exotics and uniques will be added, to joy of all (I think).

Graphical version
DoomRL Beta 1G is upon us, in the hands of the most trusted. And words cannot simply express it. I hope that image(s) will.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

DoomRL 0.9.9.2 is to be released to public within one month. Stay tuned for more information from the Forge!

Requests For Features / New badges and medals ideas
« on: December 30, 2010, 18:20 »
Achievements are fun, so why not propose more of them? Kornel recommends that you post in this topic, so he might get ideas!

To begin, with my ideas:

Slayer Gold: Completing AoB with 100% kills on HNTR
Slayer Platinum: Completing AoB with 100% kills on HMP
Slayer Diamond: Completing AoB with 100% kills on UV

Singleton Silver: Complete AoMr without DG on HNTR
Singleton Gold: Complete AoMr without DG on UV

So, after bazzlinoth stupid death caused by the maze level layout more than anything and short chat with Malek, I am wondering if it would not be better for the game to remove the maze level type from it altogether. Such levels are boring, unfairly dangerous and overall un-fun. It is not a good sign if a players groans out of annoyance upon being spawned in such place.

Of course, this would also decrease the overall variety of levels, and that would be horrible... so, well, what is your opinion?

Graveyard / Seven Waves - an Exalted PbP [OOC]
« on: December 30, 2010, 04:54 »
'Oh, don't look at me like that... It is not my fault that my mother was not quite native to the Creation, and I am definitely not going to consume your emotions or soul. Really. Anyway. You want to hear the story, right? Well then, where do we begin...

***

This is the OOC topic for Seven Waves, a game of Exalted set on a small island in the West, dangerously close to the bordermarches, endangered by an onslaught of cruel bandits, and of the island's protectors, a rag-tag bunch of exalts drawn there in a curious twist of Fate. Theirs is the power, but the bandits are uncountable- and so, no one can be sure if the Exalted manage to save the villagers from grim, gritty end.

Current player rooster consists of:
-Malek, our favourite inquisitor, starring as Blind Dawn, Dawn Caste Lawgiver
-Xander_Morhaime as Light of True Judgement, Adamant Caste Alchemical, stranger to the Creation

I am willing to accept more players into the game, but:
*I would prefer the more ordinary splat of Exalts, that is Solars and Terrestials, those want to play as something more exotic should give me a damm good reason for such exalt to participate in the defence of a backwater village
*I am using all official errata, available through Scroll of Errata on DriveThru RPG- and it is important, because the errata changes many rules, including the character genertaion
*Exalted is a new system for me, so when thing come to blows, I will have to rely on help of more experienced players to run the combat smoothly enough - so don't expect your GM to be an expert in the field of rules.
*Merits and Flaws on case by case basis, players start with 75 XP to spend at character creation.

So, any volunteers?
