Other thoughts on what the Staff could do:

  • Maybe carrying it (or if it was possible, equipping it or putting in the preparted slot) provides X% torso fire resistance (since the vlie attack is fire damage. It could be a melee weapon, too, after all...
  • ...or maybe it makes Viles less likely to blast you or raise corpses - they decide they want to run away from their "master" instead...
  • ...or maybe, if it became a melee weapon, it would have the Vampyre ability, or some toned-down variation on it (similar to how the Butcher's Cleaver mimics Blademaster)

Given that the Arena Master is an Arch-Vile, and Arch-Viles raise the dead...

...is there some way the Staff could be used to raise a corpse that would then fight *for* you instead of against you.  (Maybe at the cost of Max HP, depending on what you raise...)

So many times I just look inside a room to see archviles and revenants in a large pack and then benny hill chasing musics starts when I slam the door shut and try get away from them.

ROTFLMAO.  The mental images this conjures up... and will continue to every time I hear _Yakety Sax_ from now until the day I die.

Semi-formed random thoughts...

Personal Hologram Pack (unique consumable)
"If you can't beat 'em..."
You are now, at least in appearance, one of *them*. When used, the effect will last some number of turns (maybe half an Inv powerup?).  Monsters who can see you when you use the item only have a 25% change of being affected.  Any other monsters will not attack you until the effect ends *unless*:
You do something that causes a monster to be damaged (always) or
You are seen by monster A doing damage to monster B (50/50 chance that the effect ends for the monster A).

(Side note:
I also had the idea of having the hologram(s) be
-of the player
-trail behind the player by some number of moves
-some times targeted by monsters instead of the player
I'm not sure which of the two is better.)

Flash Grenade (exotic weapon)
Damage:0d0
Once fired, disappears from inventory.
Effect:When fired, it will land on the exact square that is targeted (unless that square is out of sight, in which case it has some chance to land on an empty adjacent square instead). 
It will then create a radius 6 blast.
Any monster caught in the blast will be prevented from taking any action for some number of turns (perhaps with a dropoff dependent on distance from the center of the blast).
If the player is in the blast, the player's base vision range is decreased to 4 for some number of turns, unless the player is wearing light-amp goggles, in which case it is reduced to 1.

Nothing fancy here, just a decent run.  The noteworthy thing was that on Hell Level 6, for only the third time (been playing since 9.9.1), I came across the Dragonslayer... and, despite multiple days of trying several different ideas on how to get it, it simply sat there and mocked me.  The thing is, at this point, I have no idea even what to try now should I ever run into it again.  Everyone on the forums here says it's facepalmingly simple - saw a (I think) recent post on here where an AoMr PC got it... but the mystery eludes me for now.  I tried to look on the old wiki for the quote-clue (as another forum post suggested) but the link pops up a login prompt that I can't get past.  (And, as a side note, I've *never* seen the BFG10K.)

Only played a few games of 9.9.5 so far, but I like it - I wasn't sure what I'd think of the 8/8/8 format.

Oh, and is it just me, or does the AA seem... underpowered and/or fragile?  I mean, I know it's 11, and maybe it's doing me more help than I realize, but it always seems to go away awful fast...

It's actually per three floors, although this condition starts on dlvl3. In a typical game, you should hit clvl9, leveling at 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. If a special level exists on one of these floors, you will ALSO get a level for the special level as well. This means you can get extra levels for the following:

Hell's Arena spawning on dlvl3
Chained Court spawning on dlvl6
The Wall/Hell's Armory spawning on dlvl9
The Wall/Halls of Carnage spawning on dlvl12
Spider's Lair/The Vaults spawning on dlvl18
The Vaults spawning on dlvl21

This leads to a potential of clvl15, having more traits than you could possibly know what to do with. Given an amount of luck on the first couple of floors, you may end up leveling early by enemy friendly fire, leading to a clvl16. (I assume this is how you managed clvl13 in spite of only 11 floors' worth of level ups.)
This is intentional for basic traits only: those with a normal max of two ranks can go up to three, and those with a normal max of three ranks can go up to five. It makes YAAM'd runs on higher difficulties and A100 far more amusing.

Congrats on the Pacifism Plat! Not an easy run at all, even if you weren't aiming for the Diamond. Best of luck on other Nightmare! victories, I highly recommend AoMC for best results.

Thanks!  No, I wasn't aiming for the Diamond - maybe next time.  I tried for it quite a few times in 9.9.1, but never quite made it.

I knew that the basic traits were opened up at the higher character levels - haven't done an A100 game yet, that's going to be fun - but the version.txt files says "...after char level 12...".  I didn't know if that meant, for example, Ironman 4 would be selectable upon reaching level 12 (which is how it worked for me) or upon reaching level 13 (which is, in a sense "after" level 12).

I don't remember if I got a level from friendly fire or not... I did pull a level early on that was a barrel lever and that wiped out a few baddies.  I don't remember if it gave me a level.

If you can make your way to the stairs on Hell's Arena, you can leave regardless of how much you have/haven't killed.  Usually it's not too bad to make a break for the stairs even on nightmare.

Agreed.  I only went into the Arena for the level up, which I used for DM.  Had to waltz past three of the four cacos to get to the stairs...

Woah... first MFa run in a long time for AoPc!

Fireangel is a trait that I don't seed to wind up with much, if at all.  I had used it recently in a standard HTNR win and I was noticing that my AoPC N! runs usually hit a wall after the 'zerk from the CC would run out (if I even got there).  I'd run into Vile(s)/Mancubus(i)/Revenant(s) that I had to get past (no going around) and would get toasted, even with DM.  So I decided to give FA a go and see if that worked out any better.  It did.  Sometimes there's no way around other than through, and MFa allowed me to survive things that I would not have been able to otherwise.

I'm not quite exactly sure how I managed this...

Many of the special levels gave me a level up - I'm not sure it's right that entering the Arena on L3 gives you a level, while entering it on L2 does not. (That seems to be my experience).
I only ever wore two armors - the medical armor that I ended with (which saved me at one point in Phobos Hell) and an agility-modified red (it was destroyed).
Are the extra levels of traits supposed to be selectable at Level 12 or after?  Being able to select Ironman(4) upon reaching level 12 saved me as well.
Quite a few computer maps in just the right spots - and a well placed Berserk Pack on L23 (an arach cave) that let me get through L24 (another arach cave).
Oh, yeah, and Fireangel.  Wouldn't have survived the Viles I *had* to pass without it.

Just a confirmation of what others have posted: This character had a Plasma Rifle with Bulk, Firestorm, and Sniper mods.  4 extra shots (instead of 2) and, if I recall correctly, the accuracy didn't seem to be any better in practice.

It was - pardon the pun - a blast.  I passed up on many more nukes/nuke opportunities along the way because I was looking for a 2nd blaster.  There were plenty enough invulnerability globes to go around to use them.

Also interesting, like a YAAM someone just posted here - no master traits.  I could have taken Cateye, but Intuition (2), careful listening, and blasting through walls made it seem redundant.

I was actually surprised at how many Viles were offed during the run-there were plenty, but it didn't feel like 100+.  Now only 180-ish to go for that next rank...

My first Ao100 win... and what a fun slog it was:
Combat shotgun was my primary weapon for the first few levels - I was planning on heading down the Ammochain road.  I think around level 5 I found the first Blaster, and decided to switch to a pistol-type build (hence the selection of SoG's).  With the Blaster now being an exotic in 0.9.9.1, I wondered what a dual-blaster build would be like...

I stuck with the combat shotgun a little longer, but eventually the Mods rolled in and, after the 2nd level of Whizkid, the first super-blaster was ready.  I was surprised that it could shoot through walls so easily, and the knockback pushed anything that was remotely close back out of sight.  Plus, after the 3rd level of SoG, plus 2 Finess and 2 Tech mods, the fire time was .14 seconds, and without Reloader, it didn't drain (except when Berserk).  There were a couple of (caused by stupidity) tight spots after that, but nothing horrible.
The Phaseshift set was a *lot* of fun to play with, once I had both pieces - I stuck to a red armor for quite a while and used the floating to explore after a level was cleared, but eventually just left it on all the time.  I've never gotten both before in a game, nor the Gothic set, either.
I stored up the power/tech mods in hopes of getting that second blaster, which (I think) came along somewhere in the late 70s.  Instanly my primary sidearm had a twin, and the next level up (next to last trait!) I got DG.  (2d7+6) * 2 per .17s was just *fun* (although not as insane, I'm sure, as the Ammochain build I gave up) and I managed not to blow it on the way down to the bottom.  It was mostly an exercise in patience - and as a bonus treat, on level 100, a Megasphere was generated two squares from the stairs.
