Yeah, I fully agree with the OP.

IIRC the original Doom had auto-wield for every new weapon type. The new weapons were also usually in places where it made sense to immediately start using the new weapon and usually the new weapon was also better than the previous one.

In DoomRL auto-wield wouldn't make sense generally as you get the new weapons more randomly and thanks to the traits and mods keeping the old weapon is often preferable anyways.

The chainsaw is enough of a special case that I can see keeping the auto-wield there (and thanks to the berserk it's useful for clearing the rest of the level) but the first thing everyone does after picking up the BFG9000 is switching to another weapon...

The BFG9000 auto-wield is just an unnecessary inventory hassle.

Yes, this would be great.

The last time I tried getting the Untouchables I had to use notepad to keep track of the received damage and it felt pretty silly real fast...

UAC Diamond. Pacifist Gold. Speedrunner Gold/Silver/Bronze.

The game idea and UI may push the player towards slow and cautious play but the badges certainly also require fast and furious.

I wouldn't mind some UI improvements since currently doing any speedrunning is a bit aggravating...

I would have absolutely hated trying to find the assembly patterns by guessing or by Armory grinding. If it wasn't for the Wiki, I would have just skipped WK completely.

Maybe there could be a configuration option whether to hide the assemblies or not? And another one for the medals?

One of the notable differences between DoomRL and the original Doom is that in original Doom the chaingun was more useful against the lost souls than a shotgun.

In Doom you could use the chaingun to spray a large cluster of lost souls and this would keep them from charging you. A shotgun didn't do enough damage to take out several lost souls at once, although you could take a single one out if you shot at point blank range.

So one fix would be to implement the charging behaviour and just delay the charge anytime the lost soul gets shot. This way rapid pistol fire could also keep multiple lost souls at bay.

I agree with the OP.

Earlier the only situations when I even tried clearing City of Skulls was 1) Vampyre build 2) trying for Conqueror.
In any other case it just wasn't worth the effort.

After the Vampyre changes I've just skipped the level unless I'm using it as a AoPc shortcut...

I quite like the idea of removing the blocked traits for the General masters (and rebalancing them a bit) as that would make them truly general.

It amazes me that people don't think scout is the most OP class. Free intuition is huge.
Well, it's hardly free as you still have to spend the traits, you just don't need EE2 first. And depending on the build and challenge, I'd often prefer spending the traits elsewhere.
Yes, Int is good but the better I'm getting, the less I feel I need it.
Whereas I don't think I've ever played technician without getting WK.

The stair sense is ok, but in the challenges where it'd really be useful, it's not available. Additional speed is nice, but I still prefer the additional health and powerup duration of the marine or the tracking maps of the technician.

And the scout master traits aren't really that tempting unlike Vampyre, Ammochain or Scavenger.

But I'm not an expert player so take this with a grain of salt...

The real problem with the AoD is just the challenge description which doesn't even hint at the respawn. As it is, it just feels like a bug.
A simple fix would be to make the description something like this:

You think the DoomRL levels are dark? Try this challenge, and feel a bit of painful claustrophobia. And the monsters, oh the monsters...
As a bonus to all that is injust in this challenge, you level up twice as fast.


Adding that cryptic part would not spoil the surprise but would still tell the player to expect something other than just the extra dark.

Finnish would be difficult as well, but I have a feeling that most of the Finnish who are interested in playing DoomRL would prefer playing it in English anyway.

Hooray, finally, FINALLY beat Ao100!

So far my record had been level 56 (in 0.9.9.4) or something like that, probably because I'd been so fixed on using Scavenger - and ended up getting screwed by the RNG each time.
This time I went for Malicious Blades and for the first time also survived long enough to get it.

The RNG seemed to play nice for once, the Railgun I found on level 20 helped quite a bit, but the real fun began when I found the Lava armor on level 30: 95% fire res, 75% melee res and 50% bullet/shrapnel/plasma resistance meant that mancubi could no longer do little but bounce me away.
Assembling the Cerberus armor + boots just made things easier and getting the Cybernano armor made things laughably easy.
The latter half of the game I barely had to touch the Railgun, the chainswords made short work of everything and even revenant/vile packs were little more than a nuisance.

For once the boss enemies were the easy part! Cyberdemons, shamblers, lava elementals - usually they were dead before I realized what I had just sliced to bits.
Usually the biggest problem was the knockback from enemy shots, often I was being thrown here and there by mancubi, revenants, hell barons and formers and taking whacks at anything I could reach.

If it wasn't for the level generation making fun of me, I'd have easily gotten YAAM. The only level which I didn't clear was near the beginning when I started in a corner with a horizontal acid river and a vertical lava river surrounding me. No bridges in sight.
I had no environment packs so I had two options - the easy way (the stairs were right next to where I started), or hoping to get lucky with the two phases I was carrying. I chose the stairs, but later began wishing I hadn't. Oh well.

One gold and one platinum short of Major and 19 baron kills short of Hell Baron rank :)

I don't read level feelings. Ever. Sometimes I realize it and try to find it in the message list just after it's too late =)
I don't use running as much as I could. Even when I need to run for a healing globe, I tend to save running for... no idea what.
