Yes, I finally won. This time, after maxing Tough As Nails, I decided to try to use Intuition to avoid all unnecessary enemies... but... I got to the Arena first.
The key to victory really was the fastload double shotgun I found early on. I was able to clear most all enemies in one blow -- cacodemons in two. It was even better than the plasma rifle at clearing out the latter (which I only discovered after using about 200 cells of precious power cells).
Having spoiled myself on the LS, I hit the Unholy Cathedral. Bad call. Lost two suits of armor fighting the Angel... and several large first-aid kits... and two phase devices. The first one moved me one square away...
I had two BFGs (thank you, RNG gods, for sending me to the City of Skulls with a fastload shotgun) and a spare plasma rifle, all of which I overloaded now that I've found out they can be overloaded, but... I fired them in Coward. Realizing I had halved the damage of my precious overloaded BFG is no joy at all. It came close, Cybie got me down to 2% health... but I noticed my dire situation this time, unlike the first time I was owning the arachnotrons handily but failed to notice I needed to use one of my health packs.
Actually, the knockback turned out to be my saving grace, as I could use the time to switch out weapons, armor, heal if I needed to, etc. I used my final phase device when he caught up to me when I wasn't prepared, so I overloaded my last BFG -- and switched out of Coward before firing A quick dodge behind a building to switch out armor, a short prayer, and I finished him off agressively with my rifle.
The scariest moment? Opening a door... and having a big V stare me in the face. I unloaded my double shotgun into him, then switched out to a plasma rifle and burst that into him two, maybe three times... lost 60% of my HP and a red armor, but I survived.
He was huge. He had huge guts. :>
