Playing from my notebook now, this is important for the SD part here.
Had to nuke the hellgate cause had NO armor.
I arrive very low on rockets and medkits at Cybby. He runs out of ammo and melee me. No more medkits. Figure out if i take that Gothic armor out i'm faster than him. True, i get 1 shot every 4 moves. This is where it is it's SD : i press 'h' northwest instead of 'j' northeast when he is allmost dead...

Level 21 had a pack of 4 Rev and 2 vile right at start, glad was invulnerable hehehe.
Got nuclear BFG, Assault Shotgun from mortuary after BFGing it clear.
Nano pack was useless, well if i didn't throw away my other BFG at mortuary.

Hmm... what are your mappings for direction?  I can't seem to figure it out from your description.

Personally, I find the Vi-keys (h,j,k,l) and (y,u,b,n) to be a rather nice mapping for playing rogue-likes on laptop computers.  But then again, my primary text editor is Vim after all... ;-)
