playing Angel of Pacifism, that stairway is to the Mortuary. The level has just started.  I have a pile of medpacks but no phase devices.  take the stairs or look for the normal exit?

It's just the room, actually: note the three visible dots at the very top of his vision, indicating there's floor that is not lava. Also, the floor message from the previous screenie doesn't hint at gasoline.

Still, I'm surprised he went for the switch, seeing as how there weren't any blood levers (and that's about the only thing that would handle Lost Souls).

Actually quite oftenly the blood levers don't give the level feel message.
I wouldn't have really survived eitherway.

There's a nice hot key that will create a screenshot with BBCode for colours.  You might want to consider that since it shows the entire map without scrolling.  =D
