-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 75 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 65 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
And 8 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

Well, I am still trying to achieve Captain status, so this was the necessary step.  However, it was the first challenge won in the current version and the first game ever which I won in the same day (I'm currently jobless, so that gave me some free time).

Anyway, I decided to just go chaingun path, as my experience with Shottyman in this version is rather painful.  I did not take any triggerhappy, however, as I'm already carrying less ammo than usual.  Instead, I concentrated on hitting the target - hence early EE.  Starting with Hellrunner was more of a whim, but I wanted to get hit less to carry fewer med-kits.

Luck smiled on me very early - a chaingun in a tension room with lost souls on level 2!  This made Arena easy (and I really wanted rocket launcher for the backpack).  Anyway, I took EE(2) before taking the three SoB following exactly the same logic as before, even though I now realize that it might have been a mistake.

Because I did not have too many rockets, I decided to use my trusty chaingun as the main weapon in the Wall.  Was it due to Hellrunner or some dumb luck, I don't know, but those acid balls missed me more often than not, so I emerged a happy backpack carrier with only one less large med-kit than before.

I was lucky enough with red armors as well, but chaingun (modified for accuracy - am I paranoid or what?), SoB(3), EE(2) and Cat(2) are a very effective killing combination, making armors last much longer than usual.  I decided to keep chaingun until I needed more ammo than I found, then switch to plasma rifle - at this point Arachnotrons are dropping enough power cells to carry me through.

I took Fin(2) because at some point I realized that even with Cat(2) Arachnotrons sometimes manage to fire the last volley before dying.  Finesse took away that chance from them.

The main find for me, though, was the Missile Launcher.  Having it made Arch-Viles so easily manageable it's crazy.  I already had some rockets and an advanced rocket launcher (modified for damage and - guess what? - accuracy), so switching to it was natural.  At some points I had more slots with rockets than with 24mm ammo (that was just before the eventual switch to plasma rifle).

Finally, I decided to skip any special levels aside from Arena, Chained Court (for the experience, not chainsaw), Halls of Carnage (easy leveling with Cateye, rockets, a great ammo carrier in BFG, later modified for magazine, though never actually used) and the Wall (duh!).  I went for full clear, though, aside from one cave with a big section, totally cut off by lava from the main cave - that's where that last Arachnotron was hiding.

All in all, I really enjoyed it.  Thanks Kornel for the great game!

Arkady.
