Silly but maybe fun idea
« on: February 22, 2006, 20:36 »

Hello,

Got this idea out of boredom - Basically, a game mode called somethingoranother (how low can you go :P), where you are faced with an endless onslaught of levels. However, there's no 'beating' it by killing the Cyberdemon or anything else, rather, they'd be encountered as "normal" enemies after a certain level has been reached, though for this idea for work one would need more monsters inbetween the difficulty of Arachnotron and Cyberdemon, and possibly beyond :).

Either "Eternal Mode" or "Pit of 100 Trials" =p

Of course, the problem is, sooner or later, you're gonna be chunking Cyberdemons and Arachnotrons and Barons of Hell in the deeper levels- assuming your ammo supply holds out.

The level should always be the same (although there could be variation you can choose from), otherwise its not that different than the normal game. Barrels, ammo, weapons could spawn randomly, so you could call this "Hell's Trash" (yeah, your kinda stuck there :P). Maybe all ennemies could drop some stuff...

Im just throwing idea for this idea, because i like this idea :P

I really like this idea. Although the way I see it it would be Endless or Nonstop mode :-P (yup, that's a DDR reference ^_^). You just go deeper and deeper, as much as you can (somehow as ID in ADOM).

Also I envisioned another similar idea: "The Gauntlet" which would function something like this:

1) there is only one level, shaped like a cross with four "rooms" at each of the corners. The rooms have a few doors through which ONLY monsters may pass. Maybe also add a couple of walls in the middle in the style seen in the left part of Halls of Carnage.

2) the player starts in the middle, with a couple of items lying around -- the items respawn from time to time, also better items respawn the longer you play.

3) monsters are generated in the four rooms. Also, they are generated both more often, and more powerfull. Monster generation is non-stop.

And it starts ;-). Imagine how RED the middle of the level would be after a couple thousand turns :-P.

How do you like that idea?

Arena!

It sounds like it will satisfy my desire for red %'s dottting the screen!

If you want some gauntlet only monsters (because DoomRL fans will hold out more than long enough to see arachs)

Here are some in order of power:

Spider Mastermind
Ravenor (incredibly large hellish dog)
Cyberdemon
Heavy Spider Mastermind (twice as tough, 150% as armed)
Cereberus (Even larger ravenor, with 3 heads)

Now THAT in a gauntlet would be hardcore enough.
Of course, with all those huge, powerful enemies you'd need invulni-spheres and huge guns spawning every 20 turns. Heh heh...

I like both ideas very much. The arena idea brings a game called Phobia 2 to my mind, a small game where ifninite number of aliens come from all around the screen and you have infinite number of ammo for your basic assault rifle. There were also medkits and 3 types of weapons which had limited amount of ammo that appeared randomly.

The game is very addicting. You can get it from here. If you can get it work on newer systems, tell me how you did it, I'd like to play it again.

There's also Phobia III, which has variety of enemies, missions and more weapons. This one actually has its website still running. Here.

Nothing against you, but I hate both for a single reason : the way you aim. You hold your gun on the side while moving forward... and.. omg it simply look weird and I tried to get used to it, but I couldn't. For that reason alone I think this game isn't even worth the look... the graphics are very good and all but.. it wasn't fun, really...

But eh, if you enjoy it fine for you I guess!

Seriously tough, I'd love this idea, but it's quite some work to do. And I wonder what (and weather) cheat preventions should be used.

There is another VERY simmilar game called Crimsonlands ... it is even more addicting thanks to several diffrent weapons and "perks" system ... the bad thing is that the newest version is pay-to-play ... but I think I have older, freeware one if some one wants it ...

Crimsonland actually..

I've got the latest version..Its pretty fun to play but one tires from it after a while, I reckon it should be freeware..

Still, Its got a great leveling up system (Perks which give you special abilities) and weapons (From the lowly pistol to the plasma cannon, Allthough the latter is overrated)

Weapons & perks are unlocked in the campaign mode..

Amen to that!

Allthough I prefer the gauss shotgun.

A really great trick is to get the angry reloader trait and the pulse gun.

Then hold down the middle button and you are an instant plasma generator

Plasma Shotgun, Gauss Shotgun, Jackhammer - the great trio.

I just downloaded and tried Phobia 3 ... and I still say Crimsonland is better. Reason? Phobia's control system sucks badly - mouse + keyboard is so much better...

I agree, The circle around the cursor indicating aim jitteryness was also a nice touch..

Hey I had an idea, If we have around 3-4 people here that have crimsonland then we could have a competition to see who can rack up the best score in survival!

No trainers please..

Also I envisioned another similar idea: "The Gauntlet" which would function something like this:

Awww, great quake1 mod (now dead) immediately flashed to mind. It was called Project moon. You had a (rather small) castle with shop, selling ammo\weapon\armour\artefacts there, Heart of Castle and mine (gold was generating as you were standing there). There was a cave outside castle, where monsters spawned (in a form of waves). You get gold, weapon and XP from enemies... XP could be used either for damage boost or for MaxHP increase. Your goal was not to let monsters get to the Heart of Castle and kill it...

Apart from shop&mine, I guess everything else is easily recreated using DRL engine :). Only additional AI scheme for hunting non-PC target would be required...

Unsure is it worth doing, and whether it'd play good in roguelike :). Just some random flash of idea ;).

Yep, it's one of the best. There's another game of this kind called "R. I. P", but it's plain boring... On the other hand, there's "Evil Invasion", which is good :).

It's commercial, not freeware, but if someone likes it well enough, send me an email (look in profile) and we'll think about it ;).

I think I either played it and used up my time or tried to play it but it had some errors on my computer - not sure as I played 3-4 simmilar games that time

PS. Kornel or some mod should split Phobia/Crimsonland/whatever-related posts in to new topic :P

miniBB doesn't seem to support topic splitting feature... All I can do is to move entire topic into "Discussion" section and rename it to something like "Survival shooters", which isn't exactly what is needed, since there is some potentially useful information for development of DoomRL, which has it's right to reside in "Requests for features". I wonder if I should simply copy-paste everything non-DRL into a new topic, with manual separation by posters... that looks like a crude solution, but I can't think of anything else.

The shareware version would work just fine for this kind of thing, All you need to do is survive long enough to rack up a high score.

Not really - you get 30 minutes of play before the game gets blocked ... he probably used it up already ... besides in shareware he doesn't get 905 of good stuff - he'd had a much harder time

You have to beat mission 5.10 on HARDCORE (personally last time I played Hardcore Quest I got stuk on 3.1 IIRC ^^" )

PS. Yesterday I nearly got to 1 mln points for the first time (If I only took Death clock instead Breathing Room)

Now something on topic! Instead of that pit of 100 trials or dsomething, I don't know, there could be a mode(or regular style of play!) where when you go down, say 25 floors, then fight the Cyberdemon on the 26, then go back upstairs, and at the surface, the staircase would be an escape route, and the surface could have like, Barons of hell, and Hell Knights and such and such roaming around, and maybe(if possible) there would be a marine or 2 on your side fighting off the monsters to cover your escape!(Possible that the marines are just as strong as former human captains). Well, i like it, since it gives you the chance to survive and escape! But if you kill the cyberdemon, you win, but you keep going, so it doesn't matter if you escape, but you get the satisfation of being VERY SKILLED.

Sounds pretty neat..

Allthough, Considering you were just a plain level 1 marine by the time you started, I would daresay that your allies would be around level 3-5..

And a FHC would be cut through like a hot chainsaw through butter if he were facing BOH's..

I like the concept though
