However the idea of designing new episodes/unique levels intrigues me -- could you expand on that with detail? (how it would be choosen, loaded, integrated with scores, etc...)
I don't know how you got your DoomRL unique levels sorted out, so i don't know how feasible this would be.
Anyway the concept would be:
- Start menu option : "Select Episode"
- On that menu would appear a list with the possible episodes. (from an .ini/.cfg file if not automatic)
- Selecting an episode would cause:
- A different player.dat/score.dat would be used.
- All Unique levels (including start level) would be read from an external 'wad' file (overriding regular ones).

- Custom designed ranks.
- Custom designed challenges.
- Custom items.

Of course, a very important part of this would be to design an user friendly tool to create and compile the maps files.
