-- Intro ---------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I started playing DoomRL about a week ago and this is my first time reaching Cybie as well as my first time killing him. It's also my first time ever beating a roguelike.

-- Game summary ----------------------------------------

I used the chaingun for the majority of this run. I found the double shotgun on level 3 or 4 which I had in my readied slot for quite a while which helped with pesky Demons and Pain Elementals that got too close, I could just switch to my double shotgun and blast them at point blank range for a one-hit-kill. When I acquired a nice amount of rockets (2 or 3 stacks) I started using those to kill the bigger baddies instead of the chaingun (although the chaingun was dropping Barons in 3 shots (rarely 4)). I carried around a plasma rifle and 2 or 3 stacks of power cells for quite a while, but I never felt that it was necessary to use it. I ditched the plasma rifle when I stumbled upon the BFG. I fired 2 or 3 shots from the BFG due to panic before reaching Cybie's arena because I've been really wanting to beat this game and there's no way I was going to die to some random Arachnotron or Baron again. I never used any thermonuclear bombs or any kind of phase devices. I made it a habit to carry around an extra set of red armor, just in case my current one was destroyed, equipping the more damaged set of red armor and repairing it with an armor shard whenever I came across one. My heart was racing on the last 3 levels because I knew that this run had the potential to be completed. I entered Cybie's arena and I had immediately heard him moving about, I knew he was nearby, I took several steps to the right to get a better view since a pillar was in my way (I was hoping to get the drop on him with level 2 Cat Eye) and I met him right around the corner of that very pillar, which scared me a lot because I wasn't sure if I had enough power cells to BFG him to death and if he was up close I couldn't rocket him without it being detrimental to my health and armor. If I recall correctly... he dropped in two BFG shots and one rocket, leaving me victorious.

Overall, I'm proud of myself for completing this game in under a week with my minimal amount of knowledge for it. I am naturally very bad at turn based strategy games due to my aggressiveness and lack of patience (I'm an FPS kind of guy -- Quake speedrunner and Quake 3 Arena CPMA veteran). I dislike the fact that I got 99% kills instead of 100%. I always completely clear out a level before proceeding to the next, making sure not to miss out on any experience. I swear I killed them all because I always wait for the level title to turn blue, but hey... apparently I missed a few.

-- Questions ----------------------------------------------

Can anyone give me some pointers? Not on any particular subject, but anything that you think would be helpful to someone who's completed the game for their first time. What should I do next? Any specific challenges? Or simply try the next difficulty?

How do I change my tactics from cautious to aggressive and coward? I see this being mentioned on the wiki a lot but I can only switch from cautious to running (and then, of course, tired).

Most importantly though... I would like to beat the game as a shotgun specialist, without relying on the chaingun for the whole game like I always do. My talent build would be something like this: Rel->Rel->SM->HR->HR->HR->TaN->TaN->TaN->Iro->Iro->Iro. Any input on behalf of this subject from people with experience on shotguns would be fantastic.

One last thing... I always have trouble with Hell's Arena. I have not once successfully gone through Hell's Arena, I always seem to die on the second wave.

-- Outro ---------------------------------------------------

If the developer(s) is/are reading this, I'd like to say that this game is incredible and you've done an awesome job on it. It stays true to the Doom series and it's very fun to play. I have more fun playing DoomRL than I do playing the putrid garbage that companies like EA barfs all over store shelves every other weekend. I'm looking very forward to any updates you have for this game and I'm definitely going to try the harder difficulties and challenges. id Software would be proud.

Whoa- ONE WEEK? Shit, it took me several months to reach level 20, let alone wining. Congratulations.
About coward and other tactics- they are no more in current version. Wiki is out-dated

Thanks for answering one of my questions.

I did take a look at the wiki for weapon and enemy data among many other things. The only thing I spoiled for myself was the special areas, their difficulties and the rewards you get from them. So I knew where and how to get the BFG. Although I'm 99.9% sure I still would have made it to Cybie and defeated him due to my surplus of large medkits I had left over as well as my large amount of power cells and the crazy damage output of the Plasma Rifle with 3x SoaB.

Welcome to the Boards.

Good show there. You used a solid chaingun build and that's usually good enough to beat harder levels.

What to do next? A lot of people fancy Angel of Marksmanship above all other challenges, that's probably the way to go. Don't be upset if you face difficulties in Angel of Berserk, it's one of the hardest challenges in the game.

Don't be afraid to enter the Special levels, only 'The Wall' and 'The Mortuary' are to be avoided unless you know what you're doing. Hell's Arena can be hard because you still don't have enough traits to beat Cacos easily. It becomes easier if you use a combat shotgun, it also becomes easier if you put 1 or 2 points in Tough as Nails but that might mess up your build.

About the Arena- my personal rule, which worked well (so far...) is to enter it only if it have spawned on lvl 3, and I have 4 or more med-packs. Why? Being an AoMr fan, after clearing the level 3, I usually have very few exp. reaminig to character level 3, which means dualgunner or shottyman.
One digression- paradoxically, Arena seems easier on HMP than on HNTR. Well, less cacos, and you're very likely to already have a entering it. chaingun.
