The Horrible Ideas Thread
Creaphis:
Speaking as a man (which somewhat limits my perspective on this subject) I don't think that the option of playing as a Doomgal is necessary for this game. When you play Doom you're playing as a character: an unstoppable juggernaut of a man who is hilariously macho even without the cheesy one-liners that characterized later '90s shooters. Sure the characterization is a little thin, but Doomguy is still a character, just like Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, etc. are characters (and you can't change their genders at will).

Larry Croft, tomb raider.
Sounds boring. O.O
Creepy:
The character you see on screen is either a tiny icon or an @ sign. Most of the time, references to the character are through the pronoun "You", which is gender neutral. The few directly masculine references are in flavor text of the trait descriptions, which are minor. Any added gender-switch would be purely cosmetic, do nothing but flip a few random words in the skill descriptions, and be all-around kinda pointless.
You want to play a doomgal, put a femme name when prompted for one. This achieves exactly as much as a gender option would.

Firewalker Medal
Walk on 50 lava tiles without boots and healing in a single game.
Firewalker Cross
Walk on 200 lava tiles without boots and healing in a single game.

Did you read this at all:

Actually, to me, Doomguy is characterised pretty well, since I actually owned the cheesy comic (where all the quotes for DoomRL skills are from, I believe) and I've read the rather meh novel (Flynn Taggart, I believe was his name there).
Interestingly, though, in the novel, there was a Female UAC marine. So its not entirely without precedent. Still, I figured most would see it as a horrible idea, hence me placing it here!
