It happens. I've made this mistake myself a couple times switching from a rocket launcher to the Rev launcher.

I imagine that the demonic technology would have some sort of targeting system that made it apparent. Unfortunately this game is 2D, so "aiming at a tile" doesn't differentiate between the open air and the ground. I'm almost surprised that the weapon simply cannot be used unless there's something to target (you don't see Revenants ever using their missiles otherwise).

This death and this one are the reason people should always fire away from themselves. Intuitively, it is possible to guess that the Rev Launcher is homing (given that their own missiles do the same) and that the BFG10K targets the ground (just as the BFG9000 does). If I were the marine in those situations, I'm not even sure I'd pick up the damned weapons: it's just as likely to blow up in your face without targeting at all.
