I had completed my phaseshift set (with mods) on 14 and the hellgate ate most of my other armor so I thought I was screwed anyway. I got lucky with the lost souls and let the demons and the AoD give me an extended tour of the cathedral's grounds. Two medkits and a phase later the walls fell down and I got the glowing stick.
Died to a nasty vile pack I should have phased from.
BTW if you find a unique you can't use, pick it up and drop it. I passed the Grammaton Cleric Beretta THREE TIMES because I didn't.
