To support a ventilation legend, there could be some more types of landscape:

maintainance ladders: just a narrow 2-way around a tower.
ventilation system: a grid of a tower floor shape. One can go down to the level or up to ventilation in certain places. Though, for better effect this will require field of vision and decreasing player speed.
maybe some more tower internals - there must be some infrastructure. That beacon, at the very least.

Ventilation system would be godly - aliens would no longer pop out of nowhere.
