Classless
« on: August 06, 2011, 19:38 »

This is a premature request considering 0.9.9.4 isn't even out yet...But here goes anyway:

How about an option for a 'Classless' game (a good name would be "Recruit") that has no perks similar to pre-0.9.9.4 games. Of course this opens the door for new challenge medals, etc. And perhaps some 'extra fun stuff' for the people that elect this route.

Sounds good. However in this case I would name it "Marine" (since that's still the classic type doomguy), and rename the current Marine class to something else. Like Medic or something would make sense.

I didn't think any of us had any class.

oh, you meant-

right then.

I briefly thought of suggesting it as a challenge mode, but going classless* could actually have one minor advantage over picking a class - other than the class-specific master traits, a classless player could choose any, allowing for a little extra flexibility if you happen to get a certain unique you didn't expect.

* I'd just call it Recruit. Seems the best fit; you haven't had most of the real training yet, so no extra perks.

You start on level one, and you have no class.

Eh, sorry, could not resist.

Some extra thoughts on a twist to 'Recruit/Classless' mode.

Recruits in reality tend to be younger and more motivated so they may learn new things faster (XP gain boost)
However without real training and indoctriniation, they will never learn masterful skills (no Master Traits Available)

No Master Traits? You realize that's limiting to pre-0.9.9 traits, right? In fact, even one of those (Cateye) is unavailable by those rules.

I'm not too enthusiastic about that kind of limitation... maybe add to the level requirement instead of a complete block - level 8 needed instead of 6, perhaps.

Just throwing around ideas for the GodHand to think about - he'll do whatever he wants anyway :P

On that note you can take it the completely opposite direction by saying that if the Recruits are motivated and learn fast (XP boost),
and we all master traits as usual, their lack of rigid indoctriniation will allow them to think outside of the box beacuse they were never in the box (At clevel 12 the traits originally blocked by the master trait are no longer blocked)

That would be in addition to the other benefit of clevel 12 which allows further training of basic traits.

EDIT: And the obvious choice of leaving Recruit made as a simple 'classic' mode.

Personally, I'm not in favor of any of these ideas in particular, but I'm putting them out anyway.

I think masterless (as opposed to masterful) is probably the better option for a classless...class. Keep in mind that there are going to be FIFTEEN master traits, and that each class will get a melee, pistol, shotty, rapid-fire, and all-rounder master each. Giving a class access to every single one isn't so much flexible as it is redundant: sure you could get anything you want, but I'm almost certain the actual class for which it was made is far better at using it. In addition, keeping things mutually exclusive will make balancing these masters much easier, considering that the above case is in no way ideal.

As things are now, the Recruit class would probably stand out by having no masters and no particular benefits (except perhaps an experience boost and better starting gear?), but be the ONLY class to get extended maximum traits at clvl12, maybe even lower. After all, they'll get the best use out of them anyway (and some combinations totally break the game...probably better off if we start limiting all of these player buffs).

Or, as I proposed, why not just rename the marine class to medic, and call the classless character marine. :D

Why would the marine class be medic? Medics, like, heal people, and the name doesn't suggest that they'd be combat-specced or tougher like marines apparently will be. It suggests that they'll be, well, medics.
