[H|YAAM] Whispers of Death (Conqueror)
« on: November 07, 2011, 21:58 »

This was a pretty fun game! I've been going for my last few Silver badges (Lightfoot, Hunter, Skull and Arachno to go now), so alongside Veteran Silver I decided to try and get my first Explorer and Conqueror medals.

Went for Army of the Dead because it's cool and also blocks off Eagle Eye which means a refreshing change from automatically getting Intuition 2 every game, and along the way picked up Berserker to deal with the Angel of Death. Up until Hellgate things were fairly uneventful, got all my tactical gear fairly quickly. Then found The Wall which was handy, and put my firestorm mod from Hell's Armoury on the missile launcher since I had nothing much else to put it on (was saving a bulk mod for the BFG - no Whizkid meant a fair number of mods went to waste, sadly).

I had Berserker in plenty of time for the Unholy Cathedral so that was nice and easy too, got Azrael's Scythe for the first time, and then found the Railgun (hilariously fun, it was pretty much my primary weapon all game when I found it early on HNTR Ao100). Spider's Lair cost me a few medpacks but nothing too bad. From this point on I pretty much just got levels in Ironman, so that I could clear the Mortuary by spamming the alt-fire on Azrael's Scythe (was hoping to clear it without taking damage for another medal but there were three Archviles right by the entrance, and I got hit while healing up to activate it again). At this point I also realised I had no envirosuits (I'd used one for the supercharge in Hell's Armoury and not found another since) so would have to clear the Lava Pits the same way, which meant running very low on healing. I also didn't realise until after I'd ran across lava in tactical boots and burned yet more healing to pick up the lava element, that I didn't actually need to do a full win to get Conqueror. This meant entering Hell:9 with one medpack, and then having to use it almost straight away against pair of Archviles. So Hell:9 was pretty terrifying... luckily there were a few large medpacks scattered around the level but the assorted Ms and Rs did not make it a fun time. I wasn't keen on going for a full win and messing it up somehow to lose out on my badges, so I just played it safe and BFG'd the Cyberdemon to oblivion.

I wasn't counting as I went, but it looks like I used the scythe 10 times in order to end up with 50 max health despite Ironman 4... I guess that was maybe 6 times in Mortuary and 4 in Lava Pits, or possibly 5 in each.

 123 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 4 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Interesting combination, I wouldn't consider MAD -> Ber as one of the more regular options for a Conqeuror run. Looks like it served you rather well though! I find it amusing that, in spirte of spending the effort and health to pick up the lava element, you didn't actually use it, neither on dlvl24 nor against the Cyberdemon: surely you could have found SOME use out of it at that point, even if you weren't aiming for the full win. (I should note that a lot of people consider JC easier than the Cyberdemon in this version. It's really up to you whether or not you want to test your luck, but I tend to agree with them.)

Also, welcome to the forums!

Heh, yeah - I probably should've just used the lava element to help deal with all the nasties on that last floor. I don't think I'd quite made up my mind whether or not to go for the full win or not at that point though, and once I'd cleared the level the Cyberdemon itself was just a matter of unloading BFG rounds for a while, so no real need to use it there (and yeah, I imagine JC would've been just as easy, but ah well!).

You could also use the Lava Element to get the Cyberdemon's Head medal.  Just sayin'...
