Yes, yes I will have trouble with that swarm of lost souls.  As it turns out my detour to Finesse and Juggler meant I didn't get Berserker before the Hellgate, and considering I often have Vampyre before leaving there this was a bit of an issue, but it was still easily conquerable.  So I figured I'd trigger the wall drop and run back to the door, which was a big mistake.  On the way there, the lost souls were just tearing me up; I should have just shotgunned them from the beginning and taken a few hits, but damn I forgot how fast they were.  In a panic, I used my staff, healed with a small medpack (because I am too much of a hoarder to use my large ones this early), and got mauled to death before I could use my fire stick again.  That staff would be the best counter to lost soul swarms if it weren't for their large fire resistance; I hoped that being grouped up would mean they would all die, but alas most did not.  I would think after clearing The Wall so easily (my chaingun mowed down the hell knights, and a good amount of shotgunnery behind my excellently crafted corner took care of the barons, with some backup from my chainsaw), I could have been smart enough to get past those lost souls.  The bruiser bros might have been an issue without Berserker, but that's where rockets come in.

Thus continues my losing streak, even after going down to HNTR.  I guess I'm rusty.  In case you're curious, I was saving those agility mod packs for some potential assembly mischief (spoiled for those who want to learn on your own):

Who knows when that would have happened though, because I was already behind on my Vampyre schedule, and Whizkid would still be two levels away as well (three for Whizkid 2 if I wanted to mod my awesome assembly, which I probably would).

so far the best method for me to deal with this ambush was rocketjump backwards into initial room, then cornershoot them into oblivion, or wipe all of em with a double shotty. All this provided I don't have (or am unlucky) with phase device.

Yes, you are going to have problems with the Lost Souls nowadays (hello AoMr =) ).

Rocket jumping will work, but remember about reloading time ...
And from my experience it is better to escape to the right side.

In case you are dedicated to running away, actually running and not wearing the red armour should give you enough speed to escape, though it's been quite soem time since I didn't use a phase at this point (not counting the one time I was still invulnerable)

Lately I have been practicing Nude Runner strategy through the Phobos Anomaly.

A naked Scout, with simple A-modded boots and Dodgemaster is able to get to the doors almost without any damage done =) .

Hehe.. reminds me of my naked marine vampyre run, though that was because all the armour got ripped to shreds, not beacuse I'd want that extra speed.

Actually if going for a vampire build with Juggler Detour it is wiser to get Bersecker first, Badass may seem nice for the Arena Supercharge but it's only temporary extra health and later dependant on luck, at that stage the knockback isn't yet a big problem. Triggering berseck with the chainsaw on the lost souls is very likely, which makes the whole thing survivable even while doing major tactical mistakes.

Yeah, now that Badass is two separate levels, it's probably not worth getting them first.  When it was just one level, I took it both for the arena supercharge and for the good knockback decrease against sergeants (their knockback is more annoying than actually dangerous, I'll admit), but I was also good at keeping my health well above 100%, but I guess that just means the extra health wasn't really necessary in the first place that early.  I think I'm also used to getting more experience on HMP because of the extra enemies (I'm not actually sure if it beats the 1.2x bonus experience that the wiki says HNTR has, but it sure feels like it does).

Normal levels will provide more XP on HMP than HNTR, but some special levels don't have as much XP.  I've provided a comparison below:

Darn lost souls... That's the most annoying part of that level, in my opinion. I've lately been less afraid of the bruiser brothers than being surrounded by a large pack of lost souls. I used to liberally fear the brothers and liberally squash the lost souls, but then I think the level was set up differently back then...

But then I keep forgetting to try rocket jump and/or running! In fact, I've never used a rocket jump... And I haven't tried running (or remembered how) since 0.9.9.4, when I used to regularly run.
