Octopuses are actually pretty bad boxers. Not sure about malicious blades, but with Vampyre the pain elementals become health dispensors (you may end up healthy but naked though) and blademaster allows you to kill any and all adjacent lost souls in the blink of an eye.

LuckyDee:
I figured as much, but:

a) I was playing as a Tech, so both Blademaster and Vampyre are out of the question
b) I didn't even get enough XP to get the master trait by the time I had to face cybie, let alone when arriving at the City. Even if I had done the Arena (tried it on AoB today, and it was terrible - burned through 3 armors and 4 or 5 healthpacks) or the Court (no way am I taking on the Arena Master with my bare hands - yet), I would still have skipped the Wall and the Lair. Maybe I have to go with Zecks and give the Halls a try, but I have the feeling I'm going come out looking like a Swiss cheese - if I come out at all.

Instead I started an MSc A100 run, figure I can get at least the Bronze out of it, and maybe the Silver as well.

I need to do some serious thinking and planning in regard to melee (and pistol) builds. They seem awesome, but I still need to make them work.

Klear:
I'd advise you against playing MMB on AoB. Without berserker it's much more difficult until you can get the master trait. It's awesome in standard game, where you can rely on other weapons before you get the master.

AoB is relatively easy when playing Marine, with the additional health and longer powerup durations. Once you get berserker, the game becomes much easier, and the guaranteed chainsaw in CC will easily last you until the unholy cathedral, especially if you make it piercing.

Vampyre build helped me to clear the mortuary for the first time, as well as the conqueror badge.

The new AI makes City of Skulls a lot tougher for Vampyre or Malicious Blades builds than it used to be.  You have to be *very* careful that the Lost Souls don't overwhelm you.  Blademaster makes that level a cakewalk, though.

I don't know if you're aware of this, so I'll just point out...  Unlike the original Doom, in which Berserk packs only boost your fists' damage, in DoomRL, Berserk packs boost the damage of *all* melee weapons.  This makes the Chainsaw very powerful and can make short work of the Arena Master.

The Sergeants will definitely fill you with holes, but three Supercharges help take the edge off that.  :)  Anyway, you don't have to kill all of the Sergeants;  just enough to get through the doors and then you can wait and let the lava overtake them.  You still get the experience for them even if they die by lava.

Incidentally, it's too bad you didn't reach MMB by the time you reached Cybie; the fire and melee resistances turn him into a pussycat.  If you had visited a couple of optional levels like Chained Court and Halls of Carnage, I think you would have made short work of him.

Oh, sorry. Then, a ballistic vest :) while it's exotic, it surely does have melee resistance :)

There is still a way to make those souls only attack from 3 directions instead of 8. But yes, a wrong move can end even a Vampyre.

Well, I like double chainsaw more, while it takes a WK level to make, it packs enough added damage to IMHO overcome piercing chainsaw by a small margin. Also berserking adds to initial damage, so it'll be a lil higher too.
