Based on my experience, it really was you coming into their sight first. Happened to me quite a number of times, but I really can't recall ever being shot from out of sight without moving towards the M first.

That's why radarshooting is highly advisable when hearing an M in an open room.

I have occasionally had the feeling that a mancubus shot at me outside sight range after I radar-shot him. I'm probably wrong about it, but in any case, I thought it would make a nice feature.
