[N!|AoMr/AoOC|11%|YAVP] More dual-angel hilarity
« on: April 01, 2013, 15:22 »

A little backstory: I've been trying AoMr on nightmare, and I've gotten pretty good at getting past Phobos Anomaly. There's a couple of ways to escape the death-trap, all of them require that you get lucky with some kind of drop or powerup. I've escaped with a phase device, shockwave pack, berserk pack, invulnerability, and one time I even had invulnerability + nuke! Afterwards I simply got too cocky and tried out different rare assemblies only to find out to my horror that assemblies like demolition ammo and energy gun lower your max damage, and in a sharpshooter build having powerful knockback was my lifeblood. So after botching multiple runs by doing a little too much experimenting, I decided to try this approach just to see if it could be done:

--------------------------------------------------------------
DoomRL (0.9.9.7) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

Stephen Ward, level 4 Hell Baron 2nd Lieutenant Scout,
defeated the Mastermind at the Hell Fortress.
He survived 3657 turns and scored 128836 points.
He played for 8 minutes and 10 seconds.
 He opposed the Nightmare!

He killed 36 out of 302 hellspawn. (11%)
Who gave him the ticket to Hell, anyway?
He was an Angel of Marksmanship!
He was also an Angel of Overconfidence!

442 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 394 of those were killed.
2 of those were killed by something unknown.
13 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 24 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 9 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
4 killed the bitch and survived.
5 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

I don't think I fired a pistol, hehe x) I think I killed an imp since I was missing 3 bullets!

Basically my strategy was to use Intuition to find any berserk packs, invulnerability globes or computer maps on the way to the stairs. If I grabbed a computer map I'd check if a nuke or homing phase device was on the level. If I can't find either safely, I just go straight to the stairs with anything I managed to grab. Most, if not all the kills were from collateral damage, which allowed me to level up HR to make the most out of the powerups and dodge enemies.

In this run I secured a homing phase device when I got to the mortuary, so I used that to phase to the top right which had the nuclear BFG. From there on I skipped to the stairs until I got to the SM. I got decent invulnerability globes and berserk pack drops, which is why I could nuke the SM while still invulnerable. Since I didn't have any extra nukes I just suicided on JC.. RIP Stephen Ward

Don't get me wrong, AoMr is really fun once you have a solid strategy for it, but doing quick runs through AoOC are quite fun in their own right, so I decided to experiment a bit. In fact, I'm probably going back to plain AoMr again, I just didn't want to burn myself out with repeated N! AoMr attempts; it requires a lot of patience from me.
