[U|AoMr|95%|Win] I finally got my UV AoMr Win
« on: January 16, 2007, 16:14 »

Most of my recent DoomRL games have been UV AoMr attempts. I would do OK until level 9 (when Arch-Viles start showing up). Occasionally I would get close, but I just kept dying. In fact, after perhaps 50+ attempts, I was about to just give it up for a while. Fortunately I kept perservering and finally did it!

Speed seemed to be a large factor. With SoG (3), DG (2), Fin (1), and 2 Speed upgrades to my Pistol, I would usually be able to squeeze out 4 shots before the enemy could react. Often I could unload the whole clip. If I was positioned well, then I could hide while reloading. This reduced the pounding I would take while facing Arachnotrons, Cacodemons, and Former Commandos in particular. It also reduced the summoning of Pain Elementals and raising by Arch-Viles.

I had ammo difficulties through the mid-game (I hovered around 100 total rounds for about 3 or 4 levels), but ran into several Captains after that which replenished my supply enough to see my through the end.

I had some good luck this game. I found quite a few suits of Blue Armor early on and then in the late game found a few Reds. This meant that I was never without good armor. I always had a backup suit of at least Blue.

I also had some really close calls. On one occasion I was knocked down to 1%. In my previous games I would often be stingy with my Med-Packs and wait too long to use them. This lead to deaths while carrying 2 or more Large Med-Packs. I vowed in this game not to be killed while carrying a Med-Pack if I could. So, in general if I got below 30% I would go ahead and heal. Despite this, I would still get ambushed sometimes and get knocked really low on health. Med-Packs were scarce for the first few levels, but I ended up finding several late in the game which was nice.

The 95% kill percentage was for two reasons:
1. AoMr cannot clear the Halls of Carnage
2. Level 24 was an A nest. I started in about the middle of the level surrounded by 6 A's. As I started to kill them, more showed up so there were perhaps 10-12 total. After using 2 or 3 Large Med-Packs and only killing 2 or 3 I decided to just bail out since the stairs to CD were nearby.

Congratulations!

Killing Cyberdemon with the Pea Shooter(tm) is really something incredible! And in UV no less!

Thanks!

Besides Nightmare I also need to win a Masochist game. I have only tried a few times. Now that I finished AoMr, though, it is probably the next thing to do. I really would like to finish a Nightmare game before the new version is out because I don't think it will be possible at all without the XP-scumming at the beginning, but it is so time consuming and luck-based it is hard to get motivated.

Killing the CD with the pistols was actually the easiest part of the game IMO. It is a bit of a let-down really. I am much more afraid of A's and V's than the CD. The CD will be harder in the new version, though since it sounds like hitting enemies off-screen will be more difficult.
