I found the Inquisitor Set before a normal game would have ended, so I thought this would be a decent run. Apparently, I was mistaken. One nano pack in 250 levels. No chainsaw, no cleaver, no Dragonslayer, not even a nuclear plasma rifle to switch to when my laser rifle ran out of ammo. On 250, I got swarmed by a massive wave of nightmare demons from basically every angle except the north wall. I cleared as many as I could before they closed to me, then had two choices - teleport to the stairs, or teleport to with Hell Staff. Since this was a 100% run so far, stairs are the last resort, so I went with Hell Staff... and the RNG delivered his final insult, and landed me only a short distance from my starting point, where I was dropped from 200% to nothing before I could act.

Looking at the stairs, even that was dangerous - I could have survived, maybe, but I'd have definitely had to sacrifice 100% kills, which... I really shouldn't have to do. A nano super shotgun, which I had prepped to go if I ever found another nano pack, would have made this floor a joke, but without it, it was a death sentence.

Killed by N! demons at dlvl 250 ?! Could't you just pull them into lava ?
With inquisitor set and HR3, your ms is ridiculous ! Or did they surround you at spawn ?

As a side note : you're not forced to use the stairs after using a HPD, but if they are not in your LOS, and especially in a cave, they are probably a rather safe place (at least, way more safe than a random TP :)

Now that I realised it prevent running during TP, I really think hell staff is quite weak. Probably ok for a normal game, but not as good as a few real phase devices, and probably very bad on AoTooMuch, since there is a ton of baddies everywhere, and a second of waiting can easily be lethal.

Spawn was about 4 spaces north of where I died - so yeah, surrounded at spawn with nowhere to go other then a teleport.

You're probably right about Hell Staff - I just feel like, if stairs is a bad place, I can't pop another homing phase to move again, so my only choice there is to leave the floor, or risk a second bad teleport at random, so I've preferred to random teleport as the first option with stairs as the backup - but evidently, that hasn't worked out so well for me =P

I've had similar bad experiences with the Hell Staff, (most notably, my failed N! AAo666 run) and it's really making me mistrust it.  I think I'm just going to ditch the Hell Staff if I come across it in future; it's just not worth it.

It's also worth noting that I took 9+ hits from only 5 demons. Does Hell Staff prevent me from taking any actions for a certain time period? I didn't even have a chance to run, had that been an option - I was literally dead on arrival.

I've had similar bad experiences with the Hell Staff, (most notably, my failed N! AAo666 run) and it's really making me mistrust it.  I think I'm just going to ditch the Hell Staff if I come across it in future; it's just not worth it.

That's the only explanation that makes sense to me.  It doesn't say so in the Wiki, but considering the length of the barrage I received in my above-mentioned AAo666 game, I can't believe that the Hell Staff freezes you for only one second, and as for this mortem, I doubt that the Nightmare Demons just happened, by amazing coincidence, to be standing in a semi-circle around the spot you teleported to.  I think that they had time to run over to you and surround you and bite you repeatedly, which means that using the Hell Staff takes longer than one second...  a lot longer.

Don't forget that N! demons have 140% speed, acting at ~0.71s, so if HS takes one second to use, it's fairly possible to happen. It would still be a boatload of unlucky double hits, though.

Devs, please clarify? The time to use the Staff is something that definitely needs to get into the Wiki and common knowledge, just to avoid YASDs like this one.

All I know, from the "time" page of the wiki :
Using a teleporter: 1.0s (in addition to the cost of moving onto the teleporter)

Might be because teleporters on the floor trigger Phase.onUse(), or some stupid mechanic like this. Anyway, this, and the whole random aspect around teleports make them too dangerous. They're only worth using when you're surrounded by too much baddies :(

That's why my personal "escape mechanism" in such a case would have been to run in a corner (e.g., the lava tile on your upper left), put on my gothic cerberus, equipp a shell box, and spam shoots.
You were lacking of the shell box, but had a phaseshift set ready, so it should have worked pretty well.

Your nuclear BFG was probably another great option you forgot.

Yeah, the BFG might have at least provided the knockback I needed to survive... didn't consider it until then, since I hadn't been using it as an item - I was just kinda building the traditional AAo666 B*FNG, so it didn't really cross my mind as part of an escape strategy.

My super shotgun was on the same page - I was building it to a nanoshrapnel(which would have easily solved that entire level) and as such I wasn't carrying ammo for it, since inventory space was tight enough already.

You could easily have saved 4 inventory slots with the vanilla packs you carry (what are they for ??! You find them every few levels in that "challenge" !)
Having 4 HPD, but not using one is another terrible mistake : carrying a lot can be good, but not if you're afraid of using them (thats why I rarely carry a second one).

I'm myself  a big champion of unused stuff stockpiling and 10 medkits death... but maybe I can help you manage your stuff... Well, on AoGrind, I usually rather stock too much armors... like 2 to 4 cerberus suits, + shields and uniques ones... thats quite ridiculous, but I often wonder what other (useful) stuff I could carry :/

The modkits were for an immediate Ripper, if I ever found a chainsaw. In recent runs, I've managed to go copious numbers of floors without ever seeing a flavor of basic mod I need for an assembly, so I was carrying all four mods to avoid that. Probably not entirely necessary, though, since even a basic chainsaw is an upgrade over a chainsword.

As far as not using the homing phase, that's only because I died before I could. I have no issue using them, and had in the past, for invulnerabilities and for other caves. In this case, I used the random phase of the staff for reasons I've described above - HPD would have been the next step, had I lived long enough.

It's true that I was stocking lots of weapons and armor, and most of them I either had an immediate use for, at least occasionally, like the plasma shield, or couldn't find again later, like the Berserker Armor, but there were some, like the PP super shotgun and the BB nuke BFG, that I wasn't planning to actively use until I'd finished the assemblies.
