Didn't find a level where I could farm formers for killcount and ammo, but managed to stairdive into a lucky Invulnerability globe for an easy damageless mastermind. Proof of concept for probably the only Angelic badge within my reach.

Instead of farming for kill-count, try perma-killing enemies (so that they don't leave a corpse behind). It's faster and a lot easier to manage. I find killing enemies inside doorways to be the easiest method of doing this, though knocking them into lava works too when you don't have as many options.

I do when I can, but even good layouts for N! floors can be dangerous to a low level doomguy without a ridiculous damage output - less good layouts are death sentences. Here's a mortem from a failed run where I had to stop in what looked like a safe room to try permakilling some stuff so I could get to the stairs:

This was after my initial farm floor, where I slaughtered a former sergeant hundreds of times for killcount and ammunition. I couldn't have been better prepared for a stairdive. But then in that floor, I got caught in a room by an archvile who shredded a wall and then somehow popped a barrel outside my vision(I think it was behind the wall that was still there, somehow) for an unexpected death.

Trying to permakill every floor is not something I'm capable of at my own skill level without unbelievable luck in level generation. I saw your Elite and Veteran Diamond badge mortem, and it's clear you have the skill level for this, but without it, this is the only strategy that's remotely viable for me.

Yeah, that's definitely happened to me more times than I'd like (Ammo-farming some poor former for huge stacks, only to get gibbed the next floor down). You're right, though. Getting a decent starting position each floor is key to surviving this challenge, since for the most part, you can't rely on shotguns to take anything massive down very quickly. Level gen can make or break your run too, but I've found every level to be built with at least some way of perma-killing, so at least you'll mostly never be without a means. That said, one of the most tedious N! levels I had to do with just a shotgun involved luring everyone to this tiny puddle of water (it was one of those maze-like 'Where's the exit!?' type levels with lots of walls, but no doors, as well as being early on in Phobos, so no lava/acid barrels either) and gibbing them over it. That was certainly more painful than it was worth.

Another trouble I have with gibbing with shotguns is that knockback seems variable.

I can't always get corpses to stack, which is generally what I resort to early on if I can't move around much, and doors aren't guaranteed from every position. Also, trying to position for door gibs can be risky, since sometimes things die earlier or later then expected, and leave corpses in ungibbable places or land some damage - I've had quite a few runs go bad due to arachnos getting off bursts or leaving corpses in bad places.

Another trouble I have with gibbing with shotguns is that knockback seems variable.
That's because it indeed is variable.
Shotguns knock a target back one square per 7 damage dealt (opposed to 12 damage of most other weapons), so a regular shotgun can knockback anywhere from zero to three squares. I believe that the damage calculation for knockback purpose is not affected by resistances and protection (but of course, worn armours can have knockback modifiers that apply).
