A tiny request - option to play a female character.

<< < (2/3) > >>

Tormuse:
Making a Doomgirl sprite would be easy enough.  Changing all the text in the game from "he" to "she" would be harder.  If you look in any mortem, there are about a bazillion instances of "he" in the game that would have to be changed.

I think the last time this request came up, the answer came back that  a) it's more trouble than it's worth, considering only a tiny minority of players want it and  b) the game sees you playing in the role of Doomguy, a character who happens to be male and asking to make him female would be like asking, say, Nintendo to make a female Mario or asking Valve to make a female Gordon Freeman.

I don't know about the space marine corps being male-only; I would hope there wouldn't be that kind of sexism in the future.  :)

There won't be any sexes in the future.

Everyone's cloned from petri-dishes, remember?

Fusilliban:
I'd be in favor of this.  And if labor is lacking, I'd be happy to personally take responsibility updating the codebase for pronouns and such.

Someone else can make the sprite, though.  Writing code I've been doing for over twenty years.  Anything remotely related to art, get someone else. :)

thelaptop:
Well, you'll get your chance when the source is released at version 1.0.0, hence the saying of "maybe next time".

But really, DoomGuy is DoomGuy.  Gender equality aside, the amount of effort required (i.e. all those itty-bitty pieces of code to check for may/femay to output the correct pronouns) is a bit too high at this point.  Playing as male or female shouldn't affect one's ability to destroy all those pesky hellspawn.

And why is it too high an effort?  Because the main code base is still in a flux, and I mean this from gameplay and cosmetic perspectives -- adding all these little checks is very error prone and under the circumstances, should probably be minimised while we "finalise" the gameplay for the Great One Point Zero release.

Trust me.  Once we get 1.0.0 out of the door, we can add all the niceties like proper plurals, translation, gender-confusedness and what-not.  But for now, please bear with our [unintentional] chauvinism in stating that DoomGuy is a male.

Asmageddon:
Whoa, I'm surprised by how much replies this got.

Well, anyway, I understand your point perfectly, and it's not that big of a request anyway.
