Okay, I've not played the original Doom mod before, but this one was very fun. The first time I played it, I was doing relatively well until I died when the elevator doors closed. =.=
This time, however, I was cheesing it using the elevator for cover, and beelining for MAD with a focus on damage. Early on, I managed to get an Assault Shotgun, which I P-modded, and Phaseshift Boots, which I A-modded, and Duellist Armour (which I P-modded) just before the Wolfenstein-inspired level. My alternate weapon was a P-modded Double Shotgun. The Duellist Armour was ridiculous, considering that everyone was using bullet-based weaponry, which meant I was tanking it like a Boss. By that point I had amassed a nice stash of small med packs, and even found an Onyx Armour (that I P-modded).
It was slightly after that that I made my first screw up -- I accidentally held the direction key a little too long amidst the fire fight and died, losing most of the med packs from bad placement, and spent a few clones gathering up the pieces. The second screw up was even worse -- my cover in the elevator failed, causing me to die, and caused my P-modded Assault Shotgun, P-modded Onyx Armour, P-modded Duellist Armour
and A-modded Phaseshift boots to be placed on void tiles, which meant that I
could not go pick them up even though they were just... there. At that point, I sort of gave up and relied on the respawn loop to kill everything else using a regular Shotgun, which when coupled with MAD+3xSoB, was quite potent but still not completely dominating.
That last Bru you see in the traits chain? That was what happened when I kept doing the rfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrf combination to use the respawn loop. Somehow I screw up the Trait selection screen and took that instead of another SoB or something.
Overall, I love this mod -- it had a hilarious amount of enemies to slaughter, playable at HMP without tearing out too much hair (that free-clone respawn mechanic works well here), and had a couple of gotchas that were unexpected but not completely nasty. Definitely less frustrating than playing 20 consecutive failed runs of AoPc. =P
(Grab the mod from
this thread. Unfortunately, this doesn't have graphical tiles, and is therefore not on the mod server yet.)
