Hey guys! My first game since 0.9.9. Let's see how this goes!

Attached in the spoiler is a running commentary of my experience playing it, and how it's changed. Read if you want a little bit of a laugh at an old fart:

Overall, it was quite enjoyable and I look forward to the new unlockables and stuff!

If anyone could clear me up on a few things, such as the deimos levels, why the wall was removed, assemblies and how to beat the cyberdemon on only floor 15, it'd be greatly appreciated! (inb4 noob comments at the latter :B)

I'll try.
  • Levels are organised into episodes (Phobos, Deimos, Hell), with each episode having 7 "regular" levels and one final "boss" level.  The three "boss" levels are the Phobos Anomaly, Tower of Babel and Dis, with the Bruiser Bros, Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind as bosses respectively.
  • Assemblies are fixed sets of mods that you apply to specific weapon/armour/boot types that change the weapon/armour/boot's properties.
  • Some special levels are grouped together, and on each run, only one special level from the group gets spawned.  The grouping is done such that the relative difficulties of the grouped special levels are similar.

tl;dr DoomRL now follows the Doom 1 structure as much as we can get away with, and Cybie is no longer the only Big Bad.

Now, as for assemblies: I assume you have to have the schematic packs, like from HA, or wizkid, to use them?

Well, welcome back! For a first try after ages, you've done pretty well :).

Some clarifications you asked about:

Armor works differently now - it has it's protection as before, but also resistances to the six types of damage. These resistances are applied _before_ protection (so a red armor with 4 protection and 25% fire resist would whittle down a 20-damage hit by 5 points for the resistance, and then by further 4 points for protection, for an 11 damage hit). If an armor has no resistance against a particular damage type, only protection is applied. Green armor offers bullet and shrapnel resist, blue resists plasma and red protects well against fire, and in these cases increased protection is counterbalanced by slower movement speed. Boots have similar resists, although they only protect against acid and fire.
Take care of your armor - once it's durability drops below 50%, resists and protection are halved, and below 25% halved again.

Deimos levels are simply a "second eight" of levels, as Hell is the "third eight". And yes - there is a Spider Mastermind somewhere ;).

The Wall was not removed, it is paired with the Containment Area you visited. There are a total of 11 special levels per game, five of them are always the same, while the other six locations can generate one of two levels each (The Wall and Containment Area is one such example pairing).

You can create Assemblies by applying certain mod-pack combinations to a weapon, armor or boots, usually creating something more than just a "sum of its parts". There are three categories: basic, which require two mods and no Whizkid rank, advanced with three mods and WK1 needed, and master assemblies with four mods and WK2 required. The list is on the Wiki, so if you wish to be spoiled, check there :). You don't have know the schematics - you can find the combinations on your own.

And Cybie on level 16? Well, you killed him, so you already know ;). I'd just say that a red armor is _much more useful_ against Cybie due to its fire resistance than the nanofiber you assembled. Otherwise, you were set up pretty well :).

As for the armour - thanks so much for explaining it to me and explaining resistances are applied BEFORE the protection. You're right in saying that the red armour should help heaps with Cybie, then.

I tried making one of the assemblies according to the wiki on a weapon when I had armor schematics, and it said that there was no further mods allowed on that weapon - hence why I asked. What do the schematics do, then? I'll give it another run sometime.

Learn to make a fireproof armor then soon - it adds _another_ 30% fire resist (but lowers melee resist by the same amount, happily into negative numbers!) for even more help :).
Schematics only tell you how to make a particular assembly without your need to discover it yourself (check the Known Assemblies ingame via "A" key).
Also note that once you discover any assembly (doesn't matter whether through experiment or schematics), all future chars will know it. Known assemblies then count towards Technician badge series, from Bronze for any assembly known (and you have it already) to Diamond for all assemblies known.
