[H|YAAM/YAFW] Strongman Diamond Conqueror! :D

I've gotten Strongman Diamond a couple times in previous versions, but never as a conqueror.  In the past, I didn't even try to get the Conqueror badge; it just seemed too daunting, but then someone else did it...  I think?...  I seem to remember someone posting a mortem in which they got Strongman Diamond as conqueror, but I can't find it now!  :o  (I found mortems from appuru, Q2ZOv, and Sylph, but none of them are conquerors, so maybe I'm misremembering?  Someone correct me if I'm wrong)  :|  Anyway, I put off getting Strongman Diamond in this version, because I figured if I was going to do it, I'd better do it as conqueror, or it would be "just another Strongman Diamond" and I wanted it to be something a little more special.  :D  Nevertheless, I have to give credit to Q2ZOv and Sylph for helping to lay the foundations of my strategy for this game in the above-mentioned mortems.  :)

Unlike my previous attempts at this badge, this time, I followed Sylph's advice and went for Brute 3 instead of going straight to Berserker.  Usually, I favour the strategy of hanging back until I'm berserk and then charging into the fray to make the berserk last as long as possible.  This time around, there was a lot more hanging back and the first five levels or so were a pretty intense game of juggling my weapons and hoping against hope that nothing died while I had a weapon in my hands.  Once I got Vampyre trait, I pretty much abandoned all weapon use, eventually throwing them all away except my missile launcher for wall-busting, and used my fists exclusively.

Notes from this run:

Hell's Arena was the hardest hurdle to overcome and I almost didn't make it.  (I used up all my med packs)  Luckily, there was a berserk pack near the entrance that let me take out two of the cacodemons right off the bat and the level afterward had two small med packs in the starting room that helped me get back on my feet.

By chained court, I had berserker trait, so I was able to do a bit of the "charge into the fray" strategy and took out three of the hell knights with one berserk pack!  :)  After that, I did some gift-dropping and waited in the doorway a bit to help take out some of the formers and had an unexpectedly early visitor...

Fortunately, my berserk kicked in after a couple of punches and I took him down without too much trouble.  :)

I got Vampyre trait in the middle of Military Base; lots of easy healing opportunities via gift-dropping there.  :)

At Phobos Anomaly, I phased past the opening ambush, killed some dudes in the doorway, went berserk and charged the rest.  Then I donned my ballistic armour and closed to point-blank with the bruisers.

Hell's Armory had pretty useless mods, including a firestorm.  (Well, useless for this build, anyway)  Again, I took advantage of the melee protection from the ballistic armour when facing the Shambler.

In the Containment Area, I very nearly screwed up the whole run by narrowly missing an imp with my missile launcher while wall-busting.  This is about the point that I officially abandoned all weapon use of any kind for the rest of the game.  I threw them all away; I just didn't want to risk messing things up after coming this far.

City of Skulls was when I got Badass 2.  Lots of lost souls for healing up to 200%!  Whee!  :D  Sadly, the Agony Elemental failed to drop any hatred skulls.  Boo!  :(

I took a suit of power-modded blue armour into the Spider's Lair and charged around punching them all.  They completely melted it, but I didn't have to use a single med pack and thanks to the supercharge, I came out with 200% again!  I think this was the point I really knew the game was in the bag.

Funnily enough, in Unholy Cathedral, the AoD took me down to about 150% health and killing him brought me back up to 200% again!  :)  I don't know why I bothered taking the Scythe with me, since I never ended up using it.

I found Malek's Armour in the Vaults, which normally is a huge boon, but I found it to be less useful than usual, probably because by this point, I'd grown accustomed to using armour that offered melee protection.  Malek's armour kept getting shredded every time I closed to melee range and I had to keep switching away from it.

Limbo was the last level that really provided a challenge.  I burned through several med packs and both blood skulls that I had picked up from CoS.  All that lava made for less room to maneuver, so I got pounded pretty badly whenever I tried to charge my enemies.  Fortunately, all the rewards at the right side of the map remained intact, including the nuclear BFG, supercharges, and med packs.

I got a little worried while fighting JC when I got surrounded by summons and he teleported away, but I managed to find him and he ended up dying more quickly than I expected.

Yay!  12 Diamonds!  :D  Time to update my sig again!  :)

Awesome work! I'm *so* glad the game actually registered such an achievement as well!

When you mentioned ballistic armour, were you referring to the assembly, or the exotic? (or both - a ballistic ballistic vest is gorgeous!)

You posted in my strongman thread mentioning that you rarely used fireproof or ballistic armours. I'm guessing using them pushed you into the dizzy heights of strongman conquerer, and while it was nice of you to mention me in your writeup, I only wish I could take credit! I'm in awe!

I'm suspecting that even the mortuary/limbo/spider lair isn't as challenging as the early game (pre-vampyre) - did you find this?
Also, have you ever tried strongman without vampyre? Getting vamp very much seemed to be the turning point of the whole game in my runs, I wonder if strongman is doable without it?

I meant the assembly; I've never assembled a ballistic ballistic vest, but I imagine it would be pretty funny.  :)

And yes, absolutely, the early game was the hardest part;  shortly after I got Vampyre skill, I had more med packs than I knew what to do with.  :)

Without Vampyre, this would be ridiculously hard.  (instead of just very hard)  ;)  A Blademaster build using fists tends not to get kills often enough for it to be really useful, (I've always found the image of a Blademaster using fists to be funny; I guess he swings his fist so fast that it hits multiple enemies)  :P  and the technician master trait uses knives, so you wouldn't be able to get Strongman Diamond...  (perhaps a masterless technician game?)

Actually, I think you could probably get strongman by having a knife in the offhand weapon slot.

I don't think so.  Back in version 0.9.9.4, when I got most of my Diamonds, there was an exploit where you could get Juggler trait and wield the chainsaw in your prepared slot and as long as your hands were empty, it would count as a fist kill.  Since then, they've corrected that, so I think that if you get malicious blades, and have a knife in your offhand, it will hit with the knife and count as a knife kill.  Maybe I'll do a speedrun on ITYTD later to test that.  :)
