[H|YAVP] My first ever win on Hurt Me Plenty.
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:37 »

My first win on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty. Technician rocks. So does an upgraded nuclear plasma rifle. I planned to get the Entranchment (or whatever the skill giving +30% resists when chain firing is called) but changed my mind after getting the last prerequiiste :D. Ended with a generic build, didn't hurt me at all. Some good drops (onyx mod) and i love the nuclear plasma rifle: i could one-shot death knights, sometimes even stronger enemies and almost everything else died in two shots. Otherwise unremerkable run. It is however my first win on HMP so i decided to post it.
Any comments are welcome.

Hey hey, welcome to the forum. Emphasizing your presence with a mortem is never a bad thing, and I must say this is a pretty damn good one too. You seem to have put your traits in WK to good use, what with all the mods slapped on... everything? Wow. You're certainly not short on weapons either, but looking at your inventory it's a wonder you didn't run out of ammo. You have the nuclear plasma rifle of course, but without the Ammochain trait I can't vouch for it's reliability. It seems to have worked though...

Skipping Entrenchment was probably a good choice. It only works when you're chainfiring, indeed, which means you're standing still, which greatly increases your chances of getting shot. I hardly ever play rapidfire builds, so when I do I tend to forget chainfire, which means my opinion on this might actually be worth diddly squat.

Good show, all in all. Apart from the Unholy Cathedral, any particular reasons why you decided not to go for the special levels you skipped?

Congrats on your win!  :)  You could very well have a Conqueror badge in the near future.  :)

You have the nuclear plasma rifle of course, but without the Ammochain trait I can't vouch for it's reliability. It seems to have worked though...

I can vouch for its reliability, especially with SOB4 and Eagle Eye.  (I probably would've taken a second level in EE, though)  It can be quite a devastating weapon that makes all ammo worries irrelevant.  A very lucky find for a rapid-fire build!

I agree; I mean I've never used it, but Entrenchment seems like the most useless trait in the game to me.  The best strategies involve avoiding getting hit, but Entrenchment is based on an expectation to get hit.  If it offered more protection than a measly 30%, I might take it more seriously, but as it is, you're probably better off putting that level into something more useful.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with playing a masterless game; some of my best games have been masterless.  :)

I agree with the notes about the nuclear plasma rifle - it's a top find in a rapidfire game, above a nano pack, I think! Burst mod it for extra fun. :P

I played with entrenchment quite a lot a few weeks ago, and ended up deciding that it's a lot better than it looks! In fact I think it's the best rapidfire master trait! Since resistances in doomrl are additive, that 30% is massive! Assuming you're using appropriate armour (red armour in hell, etc) it more than doubles your lifespan (due to the way resistance is worked out before protection). This all stacks wonderfully with the compulsory TaN, making TaN a lot better than it would be without the entrenchment bonus! It also allows you to go 1xEE, which is the optimal build for many rapidfire weapons, and my favourite starting-out path (EE>SoB>SoB>TH)

On top of all that, it's the only rapidfire master trait that blocks neither berserker, nor eagle eye. In fact it doesn't block anything you'd be likely to want to pick! I think that EE is the most important trait for rapidfire characters, and berserker is the best general trait in the game. Once you have entrenchment+berserker, you get a crazy 90% resistance to all damage types without even wearing armour, which practically turns berserk into invulnerability!
Even without berserking, though, most nasty mid and late game attacks (archvile, revenant, mancubus etc) will attack an entrenched character for 1 dmg - *far* less than the damage that they would otherwise be doing. The cyberdemon, for example, does 17 dmg, reduced to 8 dmg to a normal (no TaN) character with red armour. He deals 1 damage to an entrenched character!

Of course, as noted, you have to be standing still to use it, missing out on the opportunity to run to (100% protection) cover, but I found in my games that the situations where you have to run for cover (ie not already behind cover) are actually no more common than the situations where there's no ideal cover, and you need to just stand there and shoot! For the rest there's always running mode... :D

I think I still prefer masterless for rapidfire builds, but I have little doubt that, assuming good 'sixth sense' and AmmoConservation/Nightmare/nano/nuclearPlasma, entrenchment is leagues ahead of cateye and ammochain. Even without nightmare/nano/nuclear, I still think entrenchment is the only rapidfire master trait I'd be tempted to pick! x

Wasylus:
Nice win here! I, too, am interested in why you skipped the levels. I assume it's because the cathedral isn't suited to non-melee builds, the mortuary is extremely difficult, and the lava pits need multiple envirosuits!
