[E|97%|Win] YAFVP - My first Cybie
« on: March 21, 2007, 14:17 »

I'd never have made my first win if I hadn't found a chainsaw and the LS to beat the Arachnotrons in all these cave levels. I was lucky enough to find an Inv globe just before the UC so I could hack my way to AoD and kill him before invulnerability had worn off. Also, the Mortuary was ridiculously easy (hail the RNG, just two Archviles and a couple of respawned corpses) - I got the AA from the Mortuary but some Arachnotrons ripped it off me before I got to the Phobos Arena. Of course, I was stupid to throw away my spare armour once I found the AA. Thanks to nice defensive traits and the LS I managed to beat Cybie after all. In melee. :) Never even got to fire a shot from that shiny BFG, though. :(

Nicely done.. but for a really good melee character you should try AoB and the Brute/Berserk path.

Thanks, I'll try that some time. :)

There wasn't a great deal of strategy involved in this game though. On the way to the Phobos Arena it just turned out melee saved my hide more than once. Actually I'm a big fan of shotguns (at least in earlier levels where there's lots of ammo), so I'm eager to try out Shottyman. Right now I'm playing assignments in order of rank requirement, so it may take a while before I get around to it.

Would you happen to know if the number of cave levels (6) in the above game is abnormally high? Or if the number of archviles in the Mortuary (2) is abnormally low, considering the wimpish difficulty level?

ITYTD always has 2 AVs at the Mortuary, as far as I've ever seen. Higher difflvls have dangerously more.

6 cave levels are quite a lot, but expect this to happen every once in a while. It's not *that* rare :)

Congrats, that's a fast one. I played over 80 games before my first win.

Thanks. :) But as TFoN said, easiest difficulty isn't supposed to be that much of a challenge. Perhaps even less so with a history of Dungeon Crawl and ADOM addiction. ;) I did have a try at v.0.9.8 earlier, but I lost interest quickly. What Kornel did to the game by v.0.9.8.5, now there's a different story. I can't believe how much challenge games, rank requirements and cross-death stats add to the enjoyment of the game.

The first RL I came in contact with was probably Nethack, and that one looks so immensely complex that I gave it up completely after a few tries. DoomRL is much easier to get a grip on, so now maybe I can "ascend" to the more complex ones :). I guess I'll give ADOM a try soon.

0.9.8.5 was the first version I tried, but I always thought what really makes half the game is the music and the sounds. It gives you this great atmosphere. And I never even played the original Doom yet (I know, shame on me), I guess it adds even more for the people who did. But yeah, I really like the challenge games too. Actually a third of the games I played yet were probably AoMr challenges :-)

Linley's Dungeon Crawl.  If you're going to try a more complex rogue-like, go with that one.  Spoilers actually make that game more enjoyable (no storyline to speak of, and there are some things you just plain wouldn't think/know to take advantage of/avoid without them), and don't really make the business of surviving easier.  Plus, there aren't a lot of ways the RNG alone can kill you; most of my TrBe's games ended because I believed too much in their power and/or didn't try hard enough to run once I found myself in over my head.

DoomRL reminds me of the original Rogue in its relative simplicity. There's a graphical RL called Lost Labyrinth that's also reasonably simple in design but devilishly hard to play (yet somehow I think LL has no replay value). If you're looking for a more complex RL, I don't think NetHack is the best example. Its controls are terrible, its possibilities are endless and its features are annoyingly eclectic (a Tourist class, sinks in the dungeon, named pets, come on). There's just no focus.

I guess I'll give ADOM a try soon.
You should. :) It takes some time to get comfortable with, but it's one of the most immersive games I've ever played. The same goes for Dungeon Crawl. ADOM has a very complex game world and focuses on fantasy role playing, Crawl is more claustrophobic and focuses on combat, magic, and, well, combat magic. ;) One of the best things about Crawl is that there's a million ways to get into trouble, and a gazillion ways to get out.

I'm especially fond of the sound of a shotgun blast followed by a Cacodemon death grunt. :)

Heh heh, this brings back a lot of painful memories. :) I don't remember how many Troll Fighters/Berserkers I wasted in Crawl, but TrBe's the only combo I ever made it to the Orb with. Once. And didn't even make it back to the surface. :S
