Bug Reports / Hell Staff unpickable during AoI?

This is hilarious.  In my non-canon ridiculous testing, I was running an AoI N! game and found a Hell Staff on Phobos Hell Level 9.  To my delight/confusion, when I tried to pick up the Hell Staff, I got teleported away immediately with my status set to tired.  And of course, I could not pick up the Hell Staff at all.

I think this is a little strange... bug or "feature"?

You use a Hell Staff immediately. You're to tired to use it now. There is a

It seems that the Arch-Vile corpse in N! is ungibbable in the Wall, not sure if this is true in other conditions.  Can someone else try to confirm this?

Requests For Features / Better Sound Synthesis Technique

We all love DoomRL because it is an amazing rogue-like.  So far, everyone has been dealing with game play issues with regards to the features that they want, including better LOS algorithms, better AI and the like.

But there is one thing that is severely lacking that it needs to be addressed now: sound synthesis.

Part of the allure of DoomRL lies in the fact that if you want to do reasonably well in the game, situation awareness is key.  And by that, we mean that you must be able to hear where the enemies are and factor that into your calculations on your next step.

The current sound system of DoomRL suffers from 2 critical flaws:
  • Inability to differentiate "top of map" from "bottom of map"
  • Sounds that travel across 8 tiles of floor sound the same as sounds that travel across 8 tiles of wall

This request for feature seeks the improvement on the sound synthesis technique so that the two points highlighted are addressed.  This will make sound cues more accurate for the player to make better informed decisions.

Suggestions on how this might be done:
  • Band pass filters that make sounds appearing behind the pinna a little more muffled
  • "True" binaural synthesis where the actual two-dimensional position of the sound source plays a factor (by playing with the left-right channel mixing and messing with microsecond delays for the channels)
  • Frequency damping to simulate the sound passing through multiple walls (by Law of the first wave front, we can assume sound takes the shortest Euclidean path to reach DoomGuy -- so we can reuse LOS code to determine how many walls to bash through)

This feature is probably more impactful to game play than say graphical tiles.

But the bugs!  They keep bugging us!  And Kornel is hiding in the deepest recesses of the ChaosForge, doing things that we don't know to the games we love.

But the games, they are not out yet!  What are we to do?

AoMs.  Damn thing sure looks scary as hell, and it sure is.  But the RNG was merciful today, but only towards the end.

In the beginning, things were very tough -- I didn't get my hands on a Combat Shotgun till about the early teen levels(!), and my mainstay weapon was a Tech modded Shotgun, with Agility modded Rocket Launcher.  Once I got hold of that elusive Combat Shotgun, the RNG decided to be merciful with me and dropped a lot of Invulnerability Globes and tons of Bulk Mods and a couple of Power Mods which I used on almost all the equipment I had.  Somewhere on level 17+, I found the Plasma Shotgun exotic and started hoarding up Power Cells hoping that it would do a lot of good.  But after actually trying it out on level 20ish, I was not so impressed at the damage -- my P-modded Combat Shotgun with MAD seemed like a much better deal.  But by that time, it was too late to dump the plasma cells.  I was hoping for a nuke somewhere, but the RNG decided enough was enough and denied me that.

That one save was when I had to switch machines.  Blech.

Oh, those armour with really high durabilities left?  Thanks to the couple of Megaspheres that I picked up along the way.

Cybie was a bitch to kill since I had no BFG to lob tasty plasma at him.  I had to hack away the old-fashioned way with my P-modded Combat Shotgun.  I survived to tell the tale.

This is likely the last time I will ever play AoMs, as far as I can tell.  A really painful challenge to play at higher levels of difficulty, what with fast monsters and better AI...

...and that makes it one more Gold Badge to gain the rank of Colonel.

Requests For Features / Want: Health bonus and Armour bonus

We all love medpacks big and small and the health globes.  But in Doom, there exists that little thing that is most useful: Health bonuses and Armour bonuses.  They add tiny amounts (1% in each case), but they are ubiquitous.

Perhaps we can have this in DoomRL to vary things a little and to emulate more of stock Doom.

Woah, what can I say about this run?  I wanted to go get Conqueror Badge, but I couldn't remember if ITYTD allowed it or not; hence the no-save policy even though it is waaaaay past my bed time here (there is work tomorrow argh).  Anyway, it was an interesting run -- wanted to test out MFa since I've never really used it before.  I must say that running up to some monster and firing a rocket at them directly has a certain pleasure to it.  One early Firestorm pack made my cheap rocket launcher less cheap, and I was using that almost exclusively when tackling the Wall.  Even after obtaining the Missile Launcher, I was still using my trusty Firestorm Rocket Launcher to wreck havoc everywhere.  A pity I wasn't doing a Marksman run, otherwise that Anti-Freak Jackal would have been useful.

The Vaults were miraculously cleared with one lucky Phase Device and a couple of other tricks, and a late find of Phaseshift boots and Malek's Armour made me decide to risk the lava pits by running like hell through the lava (I had 2xHR after all, and add all the speed increments hmmm...) and killing stuff till the end where a bunch of environment suits await.  Cybie waited for me at the end, but he had no chance -- Bulk modded BFG 9000 and normal BFG 9000 made short work of him.  I held on to a Thermie in case of a level-24 Invulnerability sphere, but no dice.

That said, this run is special because the Char-level I got was the highest I could get for ITYTD.  Usually even with 100% kills, the highest I could get was Char-level 10, while this time, I got up to 11 (count'em!).  Awesome run, only marred by the lack of Conqueror badge...

This run made me seriously consider the MFa version of a shotgunner -- Arena with barrels and almost no cover means the only way is to dodge one's way to success.  Anyway, this run was really unlucky -- no exotics, no uniques, had started one floor in a corner of the cave with an army of demons marching at me.  Couldn't see how it could have been worse.  I think I'm going to focus on shotgunnery games for this period -- need quite a few badges to get to the next level.  Oh, and killing Cybie more is always fun.  =P

The Team link in between Search and Profile seems bjorked, showing nothing but the original forum page; it used to show some mugshots of the fine folks running Chaosforge.  Is it going to remain empty or will something more snazzy be put up?

So in the Player Info screen under kills, we find the total number of hellspawn that we've killed over all the weapons used.  It'll be nice to have some statistics across each column, i.e. the total monsters killed over the difficulty levels, and also by the weapons.

I like big numbers of killed monsters and I cannot lie.  ;-)

In view of the fact that many of the CF RL games are using higher order ASCII for their graphics, I move that the mortem files be output in UTF-8 to better preserve these higher order ASCII for display on the forum under the mortem tags.

We are already living in the 21st century, where UTF-8 is very prevalent -- many text editors (including notepad and the text box of the CF forums also) can handle UTF-8 without any problems.  As such, we shouldn't have to rely on the older ideas of code pages to provide the correct glyphs for the characters we are showing in these mortem files.  Doing this will also give a more professional mortem that better reflects the quality of the ASCII art used in the games.

(While I am arguing for using UTF-8 for mortem files, the same argument works for the screenshot keys that generate BBCode/plain files of the current game screen.)
