Wow, I learn something new every day on the forums! Thanks, that was a really good explanation. Now I know what to try on my next Ao100...

62
Thirded! That is a great idea, it makes class masters truly universal to that class.

Just saw this and had to ask - what is the "walking fire trick"?

Sorry about the very off topic question, but is hyperblaster really that good? I made it once and felt really underwhelmed by it. I mean, it fires 3 shots in half the time of 6 shots, is it really worth 3 mods? Yet I see plenty of people beeline to it, so there must be something that I'm doing wrong.

How about 24 shells for both then - nice round number that parallels the bullet count.

YUSSSS.. This change definitely. It makes the ammo conservation part of playing a shotgun build much better, and stops RNG screwage ruining a perfectly good game. I mean, you can stack up earlier, and rely on Halls of Carnage for late-game shells, but it really does throw off the consistency of the game.

0.9.9.6 / Re: [H|76%|YAVP] Got it!
« on: March 14, 2012, 15:40 »
Congratulations! I'll be attempting this one soon, so it helps to see that someone else has done it. Good tip about the armor too, I'll probably end up doing that too.

And then you find a Revenant Launcher.

Hoo boy, if you end up getting one, good times. Even then, doesn't EE affect its accuracy to some extent? Like, if you're not accurate enough, it might end up one or two tiles off?

I reckon there are some master traits that get very little love from our community. For example, I haven't seen any mortems that have the scout master Running Man (MRM) and marine master Survivalist (MSv). I think Entrenchment doesn't get any love too? Anyway, let's talk about master traits that feel underpowered and what can be done to make them more pickable.

I think MRM's bonuses are not too bad: running is a great effect, and this doubles the run time plus negates all the negative effects of running. The pre-reqs are pretty nice too: 2 Fin gives you access to WK, and Dodgemaster is always useful. Maybe it just doesn't sound not sexy enough. Running Man sounds like training for a half marathon? Possibly all that is needed is a rename.

MSv: The ultimate passive defence build - every pre req is geared to boost your HP or lessen loss of life. It does seem great on paper for ensuring survival. But lacking teeth isn't really an option in Doom RL - the best way to stay alive is to neutralise the enemy. I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind this trait, and especially why large medpacks only heal you to a max of 150%.

MEn: Maybe chainfiring players don't want to get shot and hide behind corners mostly, and the resistances don't matter that much? I mean, every tome that I've read about chainfiring says to hide in a nook or a corner and fire away, instead of walking into a crowd. How about something like Triggerhappy Plus, where you fire 2 extra free shots for every rapid fire weapon?

Requests For Features / Quicker graphics animation
« on: March 13, 2012, 17:16 »
I just know that I've seen this idea recently, but I can't find the thread now and really wanted to see this as an option. Is there any way to reduce the animation speed to be comparable to the console version. Right now the only thing that prevents me from playing the graphics version on a long term basis is the slowness of the animation. I can't get used to it and keep hitting keys too fast = YASD.

I just finished a Scavenger shotgun Ao100 game and it was some of the best fun I've had in ages. The "wasted" EE does suck a little in the early game, but it makes all the rockets hit straight in the late game, so there's sort of a balance. But for a normal game the inability to use EE for profit does jar a little.

Another way to practice survivability is to play Technician Rel-Rel, though you can't shoot for Fireangel in 0.9.9.6 due to the bug. Getting a tracking map almost every other level really helps you to get a feel for how the AI works, and for how well you can avoid getting hit. Pay attention to your reload times and your movement times, and get a feel for how fast you can run away from the enemy and how many times you can safely corner shoot before the enemy is on you.

I love shotguns!

If you want a quick and dirty build to learn shotgunning basics, I suggest this:

Scout: Int->Int->Rel->Rel, then possibly going to Shottyhead from there.

Learn enemy movement patterns by watching them using Int. Also, get a feel for how to shoot them such that they cannot shoot you back.

If you are planning to play a shotgun-only build, Reloader is very very important in the beginning. There's nothing worse than seeing a pack of demons converge on you and not being able to knock them back fast enough because your shotty takes too long to reload.

A vanilla shotgun can take you very far provided you play tactically. That means firing shots into blank spaces and listening for enemy cries, and retreating to corners. I cannot emphasize the second point enough. Retreat to corners and fire around them!

If ammo is plentiful and you have no need to conserve, let it rip once you hear an enemy pain cry. Conversely, if you're low on ammo, wait for them to come closer so that they feel the full effect of shells.

Everything better than a vanilla shotgun is heaven!

Century Lounge / [M|Ao100|YAVP] Angel of 10,000 shotguns!
« on: March 12, 2012, 19:30 »
Whew that was a good run. My 3rd Ao100 and the only successful one so far. In my previous runs I decided to go Scavenger and rapid fire, but they didn't work out because of my lack of knowledge on how to play a rapid fire build. So this time I reverted to my favourite shotguns and all was well... I alternated between a focussed double shotgun and plasma shotty, with a tactical RL for gibbing and wall destruction.
