Discussion / Re: Balance issues for 997 -> 998

Nerf badges, but don't nerf fun.

To be honest, rarity shouldn't be a counterbalance for power.
It shouldn't be the exclusive counterbalance, but a game that is allowed to say "because fuck you, that's why" due to extreme RNG should also be allowed to give you awesome things due to extreme RNG.

The problem with improving DoomRL's AI is that you basically have to rebalance the game from the ground up if you make any significant changes. Also, the difficulty slider being basically a "more and harder-hitting monsters" slider fits the source material quite nicely.

Let me be one of many people to congratulate you on even getting that far. That's insane. Also, since no one else stepped up to it allow me to be the first to remind you that OH MY GOD YOU TELEPORTED BLINDLY IN A ROGUELIKE WHYYYYYYYY???
"If I teleport, I may die before my next turn. If I do anything else, I will."

Can't comment on UV, but Cateye+WK2 builds work quite nicely in centurial carnage.

That's some mighty fine ripping/tearing if I ever saw some.
Haven't played melee much, have you? :)

In the hands of a berserk melee-build doomguy, the spear one-shots arch-viles more than 50% of the time.

Isn't Ao100/AoMC autofire weapon strategy basically "Cateye+WK2; keep an eye out for opportunities to build a nice minigun and/or a nice plasma rifle"?

The thing is, Hell 1's difficulty feels a lot fairer than the difficulty of the Phobos Base Entry setpiece.

Edit: Ok, so I've just tried the Mortuary, and... fuck the Mortuary. They don't ever stop coming. How many Arch-Viles are there...?
Six (five on HNTR, seven on UV/N!). Bring something to thin out the corpses (the BFG from Spider's Lair/Halls of Carnage is a good choice). A homing phase doesn't hurt, either; it might land you next to the nuclear BFG.

COL doesn't look that hard; you can get it with Masochism Platinum (AoMs on HMP+ without Badass; you can dual-angel AoMC+AoMs), Armorer Platinum (1000 exotics/uniques/artifacts), and Technician Platinum (all advanced assemblies).

It's BRG where you start having to do the really hard stuff.

That's usually a sign that the process was not terminated while the player went to sleep / work / school.

Funny, you'd think it'd be reversed, and Mjollnir would be the one no mere human could lift. Though to be fair I know nothing about the lore behind DS, so maybe that makes sense, too...
You know how shounen anime series like to have those ridiculous swords with blades as long as the hero is tall and wider than his head that he still somehow wields one-handed? The Dragonslayer from Berserk is like that... except that the blade weighs as much as it actually should weigh.

Huh, weird, it's just a regular green... wonder why it never turned up?
On average, you need to find something like five thousand or ten thousand (the wiki's table of weights hasn't been updated to include Mjollnir yet) randomly generated items to find one Mjollnir. The Vaults - which are a significant source of green weapons - exclude melee weapons from the drop table.

50 actions, not 50 seconds.

My point is that if you want to get your first diamond, it's easier to learn to play well enough to get scavenger or gatekeeper diamond badges rather than grind for the others.
It has the potential to be quicker, but it certainly isn't easier.
