(0.9.9) Crash on Blaster-fire
« on: October 18, 2009, 01:45 »

Code: [Select]
An unhandled exception occurred at $004788C2
ERangeError: Range check error
$004788C2  TPLAYER__DOFIRE, Line 711 of dfplayer.pas
$0047A7AF  TPLAYER__AICONTROL, line 1056 of dfplayer.pas

$00411202  TDOOM__RUN, line 371 of doombase.pas
$00401AFD  main, line 31 of doomrl.pas

Windows version of 0.9.9, OS is Windows XP.

Was on level 8 Phobos Base, maze level, unique generated (Blaster).  Went to Inventory to switch from combat shotgun to Blaster and selected "Fire" towards a Lost Soul, and got this crash message.  First time the program's crashed on me.

Saved game, reloaded Level 8, got to keep the Blaster.

Crashed again when trying to fire Blaster at former human, exact same message.  Reload, hit "F" to fire with Blaster, same crash.  Switching back to shotgun lets me work normally.

Level 4 Marine, Perks are:
Reloader (2)
Shottyman
Tough as Nails (1)

Current savegame is still going, Blaster in inventory.
Died to Arachnotron on L10, Hell's Armory.  Can attach mortem if needed, nothing special.

1) each shot with the blaster crashed the game?
2) normal fire or alt-fire?

1) Each shot; crash would occur as soon as "F" was pressed and before dialogue to aim would come up
2) Normal fire; didn't try alt-fire.

I realize now I ought to have kept a copy of the save file and attached that; I'll see if I can find another Blaster and recreate the result.

Hi there, I just got the Blaster and the game crashed on me too, when I attempted to fire it. Same crash message as above.

I attached my savegame to the post. Hopefully the Blaster is still in the inventory.

Well, this does indeed crash the game. I guess this adds another thing to the list of fixes/tweaks for 0.9.9.1, eh Kornel?

Also: Alt-Fire crashes the game as well. Perhaps a keybinding-script error?

I tried the savegame provided and it also crashes the game for me. However I've acquired a Blaster in another game and it works perfectly there.

Edit: I scummed another Blaster. It worked fine until I got Shottyman, then it crashes as reported before. I don't know the specifics, but the cause is clearly Shottyman.

The crash message:

One of my friends said he found the blaster, used it, and the game didn't crash. This bug must be specific for this one game.

I've fired the Blaster fine when I found it - must be a combination of factors.

Read the above - it seems to be tied to Shottyman.. although WHY a shotgunner build would use a Blaster is beyond me...

Oh, I suppose it's handy for outside-LOS sniping :P

This just happened to me, too. Exactly the same debug output and being a Shottyman. I decided to try The Blaster because I hadn't used before and my plasma rifle went out of ammo... shouldn't have done this... lesson learned (until this bug is fixed ;) )

But this savegame backup is really nice, thanks for that! Now I can just throw this buggy Blaster away and continue killing hellspawn.

No...If you get a crash, the game automatically backs up your save.

But using someone elses progress to skip part of the game? I call that SCUMMING.

I also call that SCUMMING, but that's not what I did (like Aki also tried to explain). I didn't use the savegame that Ruldra posted in this thread, but got the crash on my PC, DoomRL automatically made a savefile from an earlier point in this game (I think it was the same level or one level above) and I could continue my game even though it crashed before.

My "thanks for that" was for Kornel having implement this feature, not for Ruldra's savegame.
