Nightmare! / Re: [N!|28%|YAVP] Zoooom! (UAC Diamond)
« on: March 24, 2013, 18:51 »
Nice one m8!!
So the angelic badges appear when we get our first diamond?? Good to know.

I guess I have to try an AoMC/UV again - Gatekeeper looks as the easiest Diamond for me. Well - it was the only one I ever obtained :).

Indeed so true. By far the easiest one.
I tried it once a week ago but got a bit unlucky with spawns on a early lvl and had to spend my phase device before the anomaly so it was impossible afterwards...
I still got the other untouchable badges though, including the platinum one on that play so I guess it was ok. (had to rocket jump in the anomaly obviously)

I'm playing a UV/Standard now though (I'm after the wall now) and I finally managed at last to finish anomaly undamaged, got lucky with phasing and corner shooting the bruisers with a tactical shotgun.
Given that I also found a nano pack in deimos lab and have the cateye trait, I believe I'll get my first diamond on this one, expect mortem soon. :)

PS : I only wish I had more time to play this game.

92
Haha truth is I had completely forgotten.
Never had that much trouble to actually remember it. :S

So solution is try a more-dps build next time. :P
Or do plasma dmg which ignores half armor...

Yeah.  Thing is?  I wanna KILL the opponents too.  More kills equal more leveling up and more leveling up means more skills and more skills means it's easier to go through.  If possible, I'd love to just jump back to the entrance and shotgun the lost souls to death.
It's obvious you'd kill everything after the rocket jump...

I see.

I just needed a way to get past the first boss section since those freaking lost souls keep swarming me.
If you don't have a phase device try rocket jumping to the left or right.
It literally saves your life there, must have saved me 2-3 times at least.
Also don't forget to wear the red armor, to lessen the dmg you get from the jump.

It appears you can still do Deimos Lab (even on YAAM) without dealing with the Shamblers; once you kill the rest, the game indicates the level has been cleared anyhow. The bulk of it is pretty easy experience.

Either you are correct and these are Nightmare Shamblers, or their stats have been severely changed at least when it comes to shrapnel resistance. A defnite nono for AoSh, by my book.

You do lose the uber mod packs which is the final reward though.
I was referring to the nightmare demons in Phobos lab UV. Not the shamblers in Deimos Lab you misunderstood.
I'm pretty sure there is no nightmare version of any boss in this game anyway, at least not on normal runs we play.

The only reason the shamblers seem impossible is completely due to their simultaneous teleports and attacks. They are not more powerful than before imo. (unless their stats were indeed beefed as well though I doubt it)
It's just that 2 together won't let you do any decent corner shooting let alone give you enough time to kill them with a mere shotgun. The layout of the lvl doesn't help much either.
Shambler in armory was also easier since you could hide in small room corners next to the large corridor and keep pushing it behind with knockbacks. Damageless armory was common along with shambler's head badge.
I wonder how someone can do damageless deimos lab now as it is with those 2 meatballs blinking around together.

96
Both the labs are not that easy now as it seems. Armory was a cakewalk indeed in 0.9.9.6 that's certainly true, even on HMP/UV.

Btw I just finished both phobos and deimos lab in UV now.
The nightmare demons in the 1st and the shamblers in the 2nd were indeed a "true" nightmare.
Burned through my blue/red armors and large medpacks like candy.
Tactical shotgun was not good enough to kill 2 of them together.
Wouldn't have made it alive probably was it not for the cateye build and the plasma rifle I ended up using in order to kill those nasty critters fast.
Even then endless amount of corner and radar shooting was needed.
At least intuition2 helps immensely there.

Personal opinion is that the 2 shamblers are indeed going way too overboard for all difficulties below UV, let alone on ITYTD and HNTR.
Up until HMP one shambler is probably enough perhaps have it with some more summons, but a 2nd shambler together? I srsly don't know.

I admit it was a nice surprise though.
I'll think twice before going in there with other builds..
Besides, the place is optional though I did love the nano pack I got in the end, made the reward much more sweet.

Gunrunner sounds extremely powerful in combination with Int2 and letting your opponents coming into your sight one at a time.
Gotta try that sometimes.
Indeed, though I can imagine how nerve-wracking it can also become when the enemy moves unpredictably and forces you to shoot at barrels and destroy items in the process...
Shooting without the DoomGuy's consent can always become a problem imo. Needs too careful handling. At least such a game will be a unique experience that's for sure. :P

98
Somewhere on the level was a small room with lots of demons and also teleporter in it (and this is possible in any doomrl version)
Could be. Now that you mention it, there "were" some teleporters in the lvl.
I swear at least 6-8 demons spawned next to me though after getting the small medkit which confused me and seemed to me an absurd number but maybe it was indeed exactly as you say...

Just a word about 100% kill rate - killing JC also kills all of his minions on the level, allowing you to keep the YAAM status.
Aha that explains it !! Nothing was luck then. :P

99
Eh, all versions have a potential to crash/gamebreak.  You ought to play the new release soon... because after a while, that's what most of the folks here will be referring to.  =)

True words, as a matter of fact I already installed it and started a game after all.

All is ok till now though for some reason I got immense amounts of demon respawns in lvl4 phobos. (standard UV game)
I kept killing one particular demon in entrance of lvl that kept respawning for no apparent reason after I got a small medpack from there, in the end 2 spawned... lol.
I hope it is a feature and not a bug though it seemed a bit vexing.. I did get a message though something like "A demon appears out of nowhere".

Luckily I had 4 shotguns so I did it by constantly changing from one to the other and in the end I just run away, before succubing to the endless spawns...

Ok now that was one damn lucky ride.
Hardest parts were by far the mortuary and JC, I don't even know why I risked going there. I'll think about it twice before doing that again in the future on UV...

The real reason that made me enter mortuary was the fact that I had a nano pack, and wanted to get a power mod asap to make a powered red armor for survivability purposes. The RNG luckily had given me 3 hatred skulls in City of skulls (only kept 2 though) and 2 shockwave packs (an overkill but whatever) though nothing else in terms of a good shotgun or armor. I managed to use all of those in mortuary. Elephant gun and tactical shotgun were good enough with 3 shell packs I had saved till then. Careful use and planning of both elephant gun and plasmatic shrapnel for gibbing also helped a bit, as well as the extra skill levels in TAN and Ironman. While berserked I was practically invincible. However once the zerk ended, I'd only finished half the level, I really thought I'd try to get some stuff and leave the cursed place, but before knowing it I was pressing the right side after finishing the left, with loads of shotgun shells and not caring much either. The remaining archviles had gotten on my nerves as it seems...It was more stubbornness than logic. Used most of my large medpacks in there, as well as WAY too much ammo. I don't think I'll do that again. I did get good xp, but I don't think it was really worth the ammo and consumables spent nor the risk... I swear I got at least 2-3 times near 20% life. And the damned baron of hells and commandos seemed to get all the medpacks and armors in the level before me... pff. Mancubi in Mortuary are not a nice addition either, though they did help a bit with the gibbing I can't deny it.

After nuking lava pits and getting enviro boots, I thought of trying for a full win, since the char seemed powerful enough with the army of the dead build and the powered red armor. I also had a phase device and 3 large medpacks.
Little did I know of JC's new summons in UV. He started with lost souls, hell knights and summoned at least twice barons of hell and another 2-3 times minimum dozens of revenants!! At some point I got completely surrounded by the damn homing missile critters!! I was missing my damn BFG. Armor almost destroyed along with my hopes, life too little to survive another turn and weapon ofc unloaded. Last resort, I phase. Thank GOD I got on the left side of the map... Spent some turns there and voila, the armor was back to 100%. Seriously these nanomod armors some times feel almost like cheating. :P

Anyway for some stupid reason JC had still tagged me from miles away, and I occasionally saw a dodge or two. At least I couldn't get hit due to distance as it seemed. Or not? The place was overrun with revenants though, so you can imagine how happy I was that at least plenty of those seemed to die from JC's rockets. xD

Continued pressing to the right killing revenants with the elephant gun at max range with sidesteps. Had not the faintest idea of where JC was. I don't really know what happened but I never really saw JC. It seems I killed him off-screen at some point in this shootout and the end credits rolled before knowing it, just by shooting at revenants (you can see the rockets dropped in the pic in the mortem)... Now what I'll probably never ever understand is how the hell I got that lucky and got 100% kills on this trip too. Wasn't even trying for it. The common and logical thing would be to forget some revenants alive or barons of hell at least in this last level. No idea why they all died... I guess this was a present of sorts, from JC... ??

Got a platinum badge, an xp AND a rank promotion so I guess all is good. :)

As it seems Duke Nukem was too "tough" to die. xD

Oh well, on to my next challenge. After winning with Aob/AoMr on HMP, AoMC on UV and now AoSh, I'm thinking of trying some of the other challenges. Some of them seem absurdly hard.

Funny thing is that I had also tried once or twice AoSh in HNTR in some of my first games in doomrl and I never even reached Cybie on those tries. Was a rooky at that time. Since then though, I've learned a ton of things in the game and playing those few full runs in HMP/UV in AoMr/Aob and AoMc really helped in improving playstyle.

Was also wondering if it's worth it to try latest release of doomrl to see the new special levels too, but to tell the truth I'm afraid of potential crash/gamebreaking bugs and was thinking of waiting for an initial patch or something first.

very very nice !!

Damn it I loved this game back in the day. DO want it in RL form too. :)
Hope to see decent release of this soon enough!!

Can't say I ever loved in another game to kill germans so much. :P:P (no offense !)

Off Topic / Re: Getting reacquainted
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:54 »
Hang up in there, most of us started on first two difficulties anyway.
Just do some runs, enjoy the game, and do some small breaks to check strategies or items etc in both the wiki and the forum. This helped me a lot. Also taking my time in levels helped.

Just follow your instinct and play as fast as you like. I'm still an uber slow player compared to others in here ( I still do 5-9 hours per run mind you which is probably outrageous for many fast players), but I guess we all need different amount of times to enjoy it and properly advance through it. Taking my time actually enhances the experience for me and it makes it easier to avoid silly/rush deaths.

Personally I found out that once you play 5-10 decent runs and finally understand how corner shooting works, and at which angles and ranges you can hit and "not" get hit back, knockback-kill hard monsters with shotguns etc, it gets much much easier.
This is probably the right moment to progressively change to HMP and UV. At least that's my opinion about it. And it's not by any means an easy game, but it does get easier the more you play. Nightmare is entirely another story though which I'd never recommend to anyone since it reaches the borders of masochism.

Bug Reports / Re: [0997G] Visual failure INT2 - again
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:46 »
Yeah this annoyed me a bit too.
At least it's not a crash bug or anything.

It just makes intuition less reliable while berserked.
I thought it was overlooked probably on purpose, since the intuition trait is already somewhat too powerful as it is.
Thank god this trait exists though, since damageless runs would be completely impossible for most of us without it.

So many special levels and extras. Really great work there, keep it up. The ingame mod support is also a huge plus.

I also saw that you plan some kind of graphical improvement on next version?? How better can it really get? I thought it was as good as it can get on that department tbh. :P Can't even imagine what that improvement may mean..
