I'm interested in keeping this game alive and adding some features to my own personal version of the game, but while I've got Lua experience, I've got no experience programming in Pascal, so first I decided to try compiling a fresh batch of DoomRL Source Code to make sure I knew that was working.

I followed the instructions on the GitHub exactly: https://github.com/chaosforgeorg/doomrl

I installed the latest 32-bit version of Lazarus, as instructed. I managed to put the Valkyrie libraries in the right place, and the program found them, so that was promising.

The problem is, when I clicked Build after opening src/makewad.lpi, it gave me an error, and I suspect this is why the instructions tell you to use 32-bit Lazarus:

A google search told me that this is related to the compiler trying to build it in 64-bit and having two options for which data type to use and not being able to decide. However, the search results also stated it does compile in 32-bit Lazarus...

Unfortunately, I triple-checked that I am in fact using 32-bit Lazarus, I even tried using an older version dated to Jan 5 2022, and when that also failed, I used many options in the menus to try and get it to compile a 32-bit program. None of them worked. Unfortunately, I am using 64-bit Windows, so maybe that's the issue...

Unfortunately, this means the instructions are incomplete, and I can't create makewad.exe. Without these files, any changes or updates I try to make to the source code would be pointless, so I'm afraid I can't continue unless somebody knows a workaround.

Can somebody help me?

EDIT: I may have figured it out. Cross-compiler instructions may be needed. https://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Cross_compiling#From_win64_to_win32

I'll try this and update later.

EDIT 2: NOPE. That did not work. Exact same problem.

I had been struggling with this challenge for a bit, some near-misses but finally did it now! I got Marksman Gold! :D
Had some nasty close calls but I got lucky enough to make it through. ^_^;
And of course got lots of great gear!

Early on I definitely focused hard on JoviSec gear, particularly the JS Revolver, every bit as awesome for this build as people said it was. I actually did purposely leave open a slot for it to take an exotic mod if I found one... And I did! E mod might not have made the biggest difference but I was happy to have it.
My JS Helmet served me until the end... Though it's not here because the Harbinger and friends annihilated it. :( I think it was a Marine Helmet, but can't be sure now. I did pass up higher-end headgear to keep that juicy JS bonus and all my mods, but that wasn't a great sacrifice.
I figured my JS Basic Armor wouldn't last me until the end anyway so I had an eye on replacing it with something special.

On Europa I saw Refueling Base was on the menu so I beelined into Toxicologist so I could safely open all the valves and claim the ENV armor... Except the Cybersuit generated there and after some agonising I went through with it, figuring that all that raw protection plus all those mod slots would go awesome with a static, Whizkiddy build like Sharpshooter.... I think that paid off well as a decision, even if I passed up some good stuff because of it (ENV and CRI suits).

Io I was drowning with Red Keycards so I went to CRI Labs to raid the vault. Obviously the suit was out of the question was I had some nice little stuff there, like rerolling perks (my AMP used to have +max range as the basic perk until I changed it).

I had some more close calls, I was running low on .44 ammo sometimes but thankfully I was able to keep stocking up so it wasn't a problem. I kept and modded backup guns just in case but they saw very little action.
I entered but immediately left Inferno, didn't want the risk.
Nearly killed myself blowing up an Energy Core on Dante L2! O.o;; Now THAT would've been pure misery if I had died...
Harbinger really rocked me hard sometimes too, but I managed to cling on to life and keep blasting!

I was wrong, it's random. Seed 29965 Ultra-Violence, standard game, 1.6 version, Callisto Mines L2 has "emergency brake", when script is executed gas is released and a stimpack is dropped, not a gasmask.

A crash happened on Jupiter Hell version 1.6, when exiting level 119 of Endless to get to level 120.
Seed 19044 (Ultra-Violence).
Bug report attached.
The game does preserve the save of last successfully entered level (119), so at least I was able to clear that level two more times: first attempt confirmed that bug would reoccur on trying to enter level 120, the second time I chose to abandon the game to get my Platinum badge.

Finished the Haste Trial on Hard on roughly the second attempt, good ol' Blademaster!
Equipment was a persistent concern for me. Quickblade's gimmick was never relevent but Pierce damage on Blademaster solves a lot of problems anyway. Was still a concern for me that I never got Katanas or the better Exotic Blades, definitely worried when I faced the Summoner with Quickblade and a Machete, but I guess it worked out still.
I had the Analytic Visor at one point, but it eventually got broken (which is why I have a dubiousz Helmet on).
I started speccing into Toxicologist so I could safely grab the ENV suit in Refueling Base... This was before I saw there was a Sealed Combat Helmet in there. Still don't fully regret it since puffing poison helped a lot. Ignored the Helmet to keep my bonus EXP instead, which is more dubious considering what happened to my Visor in the end.
Visited Infernal Lock but got screwed out of the special Mod.

It's been a long time, I had taken a big break from the game roughly when the full release came and it'd been multiple updates and a new computer since I had last played. I was slamming my head against Hard ones and only dying at various points... However I have pulled one off! And after all this time I still love Blademaster!

Warlock's Horn was a tricky decision with the EXP malus but i think it worked out in the end!
Equipment drops weren't quite ideal but I still managed to clutch it out in the end. Turns out the plasma swords really help Blademaster handle the endgame too!

Not sure why I'm credited with Prejudice and Conqueror, I entered Inferno by accident but then left immediately, I would have guessed that would disqualify me from both.

Doesn't seem to be documented on wiki when events that spawn gas drop gasmask rather than other items. I don't know if this is fixed or randomized, but so far got gasmask drops from executing scripts which had these keywords written in letter informing about them:
1. "emergency brake". Also talks about keeping some guy (with randomly generated name) away from terminal until the author figures how to blacklist them.
2. "purge procedure"
If, on the other hand, tells to bring gasmask on your own or that it will be a quick run for the elevator, then it won't give gasmask (will give stimpack instead).

This is but a theory though, maybe it's random but at least first I encountered enough to notice it always gave me gasmask, and the second is proof that it can be completely different keyword and still gas spawned + gasmask drop.

I was looking to beat the Angel of Carnage for the first time (had many unsuccessful attempts, mostly problems with ammo attrition or running away when sighted by medusa), and decided to go with YOLO strategy: don't take Reloader as a Marine at all, instead invest early in Army Surplus and Whizkid L1 (for Autoloader), go through Callisto Rift to get poison immunity, and then build like a Survivor with Angry Motherfucker. Going this way (without Reloader), you have a low success rate early on due to exalted soldiers, but spare a lot of points for other things should you succeed.

Run began quite well, with Rift netting me a JS duramesh scout armor and JS marine helmet and allowing me to fully mod my rocket launcher (including setting up autocalibration at that guaranteed tech station), an AMP with "Carrier, Furious" - basically set for most of the game. (the armor was only ditched for necrotic at Dante L2, right before Inferno, and an AMP was swapped by the one that popped on Dante Inferno).

Interesting things happened on Europa, though. Because the terminal message at L2 tipped me about "micro launcher" on L6, and branch to Conamara spawned on L2, I had to pick that route. It's not exactly bad, but you miss cold immunity, and I often struggle with Cryomancer, so Padded perk goes in the sole duramesh's armor slot. I was praying to get Fire Essence and my prayers were answered, in fact the ammo pool allowed me to dare for one more immunity (I wanted to keep my helmet throughout the game, so Acid was good enough). Then, on the special level "Containment Area", two uber-items dropped: Calamity unique and Medusa's fang relic.

And those two defined the run from there on.

As you might guess, the challenge-defining aspect was broken: ammo management was not required that much, all tough enemies except bots die in one hit (and Survivor helps survives duel with bots), Calamity is also safe to use in close quarters (no splash).

I admit - I didn't use Angry Motherfucker most effectively, and instead abused medusa's fang effect to deal with tough enemies and level up Calamity to MAX as soon as possible (to deal with those robots). So with Ironman L3 and two health increases, I ended the run with 83 max hp. On Dante Inferno I think I wasn't hit even once (although memory can be faulty).

Possible BUG I encountered: Ancient died in one hit from Calamity, and I was missing only 1/3 of my health. I think medusa's fang erroneously failed to recognise him as a boss, treating him as a regular biological it instakills.
