Have you ever had a random idea coming up in your mind that you'd always wanted to lose in the Requests For Features section, but is so horrible that it would be plain ridiculous to do so? Well, look no further!
While the Requests For Features section is for "All those crazy ideas you'd like to see implemented in DoomRL", in this thread you can get rid of "All those retarded ideas you'd never want to ruin DoomRL with"!
Before you "suggest" something here, think about your idea actually being implemented in DoomRL. If you're starting to feel disgusted or get a sudden urge to facepalm, post it!
Here's mine:
When you've killed Cyberdemon, the game wouldn't end, but instead an extra staircase appears somewhere in the level, and if you go down, you get into a room full of dancing monsters to whom you can talk. If you talk to them, they'll say things like "Congraturation!" and other completely useless crap.
In order to complete the game, you *must* go all the way through this room (and you can't attack the monsters... we don't wanna spoil the fun party!).
Uh... how do we talk to the dancing monsters if we can't attack them? If I recall correctly, even walking into them is considered an attack...
Deus Ex hidden level? :P
Angel of Deja Vu
"Wait, why does this feel familiar?"
Unlike Angel of Haste, you have to fight through each level twice, and the second fight through does not give any experience. And if you do venture into the Mortuary... good luck. You need to kill those things twice. Oh did I mention that whatever was spawned and taken/destroyed stays taken/destroyed i.e. not going to respawn? So for example, you won't see another backpack in the Wall on your second time down.
Oh this means twice the Cybie fight for a win, and if you get further than that, you have to fight that thing twice also to consider it a win.
How about an imp who has to infiltrate a Marine Base, instead of the other way around?
Angel of Min Carnage
"I'm the most unluckiest man alive."
You are a decent marine, having decent aim and all. But whatever weapons you use, you always cause minimum damage. In this Bizarro world twist, everyone and everything does the minimum possible damage while leaving hit percentages untouched.
That's one long way down...
Hell's Football Special Level (Football here refers to the American version, not the usual one we are all familiar with.)
In this special level, you start on one end of a mostly empty arena (which might have some 4x3 pillars that are destructible). On the far end of the level is a room with indestructible walls and a single door (and the stairs down ho ho ho). Behind you, two tiles away, is a standard demon. Your task is to lead the demon into the room on the far end (the Corral) and close the door behind you. Your reward is a Megasphere that will appear in the Corral when the demon is successfully in the room with the door closed.
But watch out! Guarding the room are four Barons of Hell, with the intention of killing the demon (and you of course!). At any time, once the demon dies, you will never be able to get the reward, since it's impossible to have it resurrect so that you can lead it into the room.
Good luck trying to score the touch down for Hell's Football!
Angel of Nuclear Fire
You are armed with only one weapon: the Thermonuclear bomb. Actually, your entire inventory is full of it. Your task is to make it down to the Cyberdemon and kill that thing once and for all.
It's like AoRA except you have the nukes in your hands, but cannot wield any other weapons for use.
Angel of Mutation
Guess they should have figured out a better way to dispose of their radioactive waste. You're on a mission to kill the Cyberdemon, and the deeper you delve, the higher your level (similar to AoPc) - the only catch is that you don't get to pick your traits. The upside? You can get any traits randomly (weighted list). The downside? You might become a Cyberdemon eventually. Who knows?

Angel of Novels
For the slightest thing that happens, the game shows extremely elaborate messages, making you have to press enter like 10-15 times per average turn. But beware, at a random moment, randomly between a bunch of messages, the game will show an important message with a security code which you need to advance to the next level, so you actually need to read everything if you don't wanna get stuck (of course, entering the wrong code will kill you).
"You move your left leg up!"
"You put your left foot onto the next space!"
"You move your right leg up!"
"You put your right foot onto the next space!"
"Let's see what's happening over there!"
"The Baron of Hell presses the button to open the door!"
"The door opens, making a 'fyuw!' sound!"
"The code is 'headache'."
"The Baron of Hell summons a fire ball!"
"Oops, I meant acid ball! Sorry!"
"The Baron of Hell swings his arm, throwing the acid ball at you!"
"The acid ball... oooh will it hit wil it hit... mmmmmmm NO! You've dodged the attack! Well done, marine!"
"The acid ball hits a wall and disappears!"
"Ok, your turn. Hey, wake up man!"
Angel of Bad Plot Holes
It's like a normal game, except that there is a small percentage of floor tiles that are just holes in disguise. If you fall through one, you land on the ground below, and take 2-10 points of damage. Oh, stairs don't really exist, except for the ones leading to special levels, which, incidentally, still have their usual exits with zero floor tiles that are holes in disguise.
lower the damage and I'd play it...

Yeah... You'd have to be
terribly careful of Viles though (keep in mind that they do 10d1 and thus "min damage" and "max damage" for them is exactly the same).
I am Death Incarnate! difficulty:
In addition to all normal enemy bonuses on UV, enemies deal twice as much damage and take no friendly fire (including splash). All Former Humans are replaced with Former Captains, and all Hell Knights are replaced with Barons of Hell. Finally, the Cyberdemon's rocket launcher is replaced with a quad-fire chaingun (meaning 16 shots at once) and 400 ammo to boot, and is invulnerable to nuclear damage. Enjoy your stay! (Secretly, JC would have the same changes, in case someone thinks they're being clever.)
And before you say anything, no, this wouldn't be pleasant to play at ALL. I just like the Wolf3d reference.

Of course, if you did do that, you'd probably have to make it so that, if you decided to nuke Cybie anyway, that you couldn't go down the stairs untill you'd killed him, because otherwise a player might "skip" cybie, which would probably glitch the game up something chronic...
I've skipped him before:
http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,3418.0.html (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,3418.0.html)
It bugs the game as much as running from hell's arena does, none at all.
The point of the changes to JC is so you cannot run away to an easier boss.
Angel of Sheer Bad Luck
You are the unluckiest sonofabitch in the marines. All of Hell is against you (doing maximum damage with maximum accuracy), while you are mediocre at best (minimum damage, no accuracy bonuses). Medpacks don't work well with your lousy constitution (heals at 50% of what the medpack usually heals), and you have no bloody idea how to use any of those globes and spheres out there (none of the globes and spheres work, not even automap). Everything you pick up is always weakened (half the number of dice for damage dealing weapons, half the stack of the magazine/clip if it has one, and half the durability for armours/boots), and phase devices just blow up in your face (phase and homing phase devices cause 10HP damage upon pick up). And may God help you if you pick up a thermonuclear device (50% chance of going off immediately on pick up).
At least that environment suit works fine...

Angel of Drunkness
What is wrong with you, going to drink like that on an important mission! Its even worse! This hell forces stuck you to completely smashed conditition. It's a miracle if you can even walk straight (high chance you step a block next to the block you intendet to walk to), your aim has turned awful, you keep spraying bullets everywhere! (bullets and shotguns have 30% chance to shoot in a 45 degree off to the direction you were suppoused to shoot) Mod packs can be used but for hell you know which piece you were suppoused to put them again.. (places modpacks on random items even in the backpack), Enviro suits and phase devices? you just break em and swear something. Wearing, changing items and medipack using takes double the time! Your line of sight also keeps changing between normal and -1, -2, -3. If you find weapons with special reloads/fires, you never know what kind of weird ideas you might get out of using weapons like this (you might sometimes randomly use alt reaload/fire when using them and vica versa fire normally when trying to use the alts). If you carry a nuke, you might randomly use it when you're walking cause it seemed like an awesome idea at the time..
On a positive note, thise globes seem to work better when you're drunk for some reason and give 50% health/repair/duration than usual.
Useless lever
Effect: gives random stupid/pointless/useless massage, explodes if pulled too many times
Usage: 5, barrel of fuel explosion on 6th time
Message ( one at the time ): " You hear the gospel in Catedral, " Ground shakes for a moment",
" You hear Cyberdemon voice:Get down here already!", " You hear demons having shover",
" You hear alarm clock but don't seems to wake up", " Corpses cease to stink", " Your weapons are now clean and shiny ",
" You wonder about new DoomRL version", "You have SMS, but you left cellphone on Earth",
" You smell dinner from Hell's kitchen", " You hear angel thoughts: Where did I put my armor?",
" You hear advertisement: Fun for whole family and neighbourhood. Get your own BFG today!", " You hear fart noise",

" You hear your own general reminds you about mission",
" Lever snaps and new one pops up", " Question: Have you played original doom?",
" Your skin turns green for split secound", " Your medikits have medicine for constipation",
" You feel disappointed ", " Floor underneath you cleans up", " You hear Butcher yell: Where's my Cleaver? I got fresh meat to chop", " Your backpack begs for more ammo",
" You wonder why you are here ", " You hear wizard voice: You shall not pass "
Great idea MICu, but posted in wrong thread. This game needs more Easter Eggs and less ArchViles.
Seconded. Really good idea. Maybe even drop one of those messages on every step with 1% chance.
Uh oh. If people start getting good ideas out of the trash can of the forum, that's gotta be a bad sign.

Unique Lever: The Vertical Stick
I want your revenge.
Pull this lever. From now till when you find the stairs, all the monsters on the floor will know exactly where you are and will take the most direct path to find you. Have fun with the leather studded kisses in the sand.
Quote from: thelaptop on January 13, 2011, 00:15Unique Lever: The Vertical Stick

something if you pull it repeatedly.
Quote from: Ander Hammer on February 27, 2011, 12:11And it should summon Lady Gaga. Or at least flood the level with something if you pull it repeatedly.
Oh, god. I'm no fan of Lady Gaga, but I would really laugh my ass off if I see in the next version that this ends happening. Yes, the lever idea implemented, with the effect of spawning a monster based on Lady Gaga.
To be balanced, add a new lever effect with the identical message "The smell of a massacre..." that instagibs you instead of enemies. Do not include this change in the version notes.
From now on, playing on ITYTD move will automatically colour your marine pink. Instead of blood, you leave trails of flowers. Hits are replaced with 'distance hugs' and deaths with 'just remembered they were late for a meeting'. Guns are friendship beads (2d6 damage to meanness). The full ending is unlocked by showing the cyberdemon your Thermonuclear Bomb Protest Sign and accepting his invitation to tea with his best friend Jesus Christ.
Arachnotrons are wussy in melee, give them a touch of death attack that bypasses armor and invulnerability.
Killing the cyberdemon with a melee weapon splits it into two fully healed cyberdemons.
Barons of hell can now pick up and activate nukes.
Splash damage from explosions will now detonate rockets as well as barrels. This includes any in your inventory. The damage stacks.
Megaspheres are now ten times more common, but have a 90% chance of being a trap and spawning up to 8 arch-viles around you.
Vulnerability globes. They tire you out, reduce your health to 1, unload all of your weapons and dump your entire inventory and equipment on the floor. On the upside they can remove cursed armor, but they cease working when less than half of the level's enemies remain.
Paint mod pack. It doesn't increase any stats, but your flaming decal BFG has never looked so cool.
Jumbo med-pack. It heals you up to 200%, but you immediately vomit and are left helpless for ten game seconds. Consuming more than one increases all your speeds by .05 each use.
New unique: Antimatter Bomb. It destroys the entire planet, leaving you floating in space until your invulnerability wears off you and splatter. Partial victory, I guess?
New unique: Home-ing Phase Device. It resets your experience and sends you back to phobos base. It tires you, but isn't destroyed upon use. Unique hoarding time.
Special level: Hell's Lavatory. It's like the lava pits, only with acid and no enemies or rewards. It replaces Hell's Armory with a 50% chance.
Angel of 1000. Expect JC caves by level 150.
Angel of 1. For those with really short coffee breaks. Oh, and the one level is phobos arena.
Angel of Apollo: You begin with a (cursed) nano-modded rocket launcher, red armor and plasteel boots. You may swap armor, but if the set you are wearing is ever completely destroyed you instantly suffocate.
... wait a second, that last one sounds awesome.
I approve of:
- The changes to ITYTD (kids mode!)
- Paint mod packs. I'd use 'em.
- Angel of Apollo. Even if it would be really easy.
- Angel of 1 and 1000. Oh god, JC and nightmare cyberdemon caves.
Why are people approving things in the horrible ideas thread?!
Something must be wrong in the world today...
Here, I'll try to make sure the ideas go back to being horrible:
Angel of Nothing
"This quote left intentionally blank."
This is, quite literally, nothing. Once you accept this challenge you won't be able to do anything. In fact, we'll crash the game FOR you, just to make sure you don't think there's anything to do. Don't press this unless you're too lazy to go back to the main menu.
New enemy: Ghost
Spawns from corpses (chance equivalent to N! respawning), making the corpse unreviveable. Ghost is invisible, phases through solid objects, cannot take damage, and cannot deal damage. Locks on to your position at all times. When it is on your tile, it will make a haunting noise really loudly and say "BOO" in the message screen. Happens on all difficulties.
New consumable: Opium (common, way too common)
Causes you to be unable to die, even if your health hits zero. Vision drops to zero, cannot fire weapons, and you will move randomly (or not at all). You will die instantly if you consume more than one at a time. Lasts for 40 actions (normal time).

No, this sounds very reasonable. Instead of making the player blind, it'd be more accurate to make every action take twice as long. Then give the player a breathe command and if they go to long forgetting to breathe, they die. It's very important for breathing not to display any messages, so there is no way to tell how long it's been since your last breath.

slower.
Green, on the other hand...
No, thelaptop, you do not understand.
Red wunz go fasta!
[/Wh40k reference ends here]
I was wondering where that came from...
Mod Tactical Armor so that it turns you red.
Make red armor black instead.
That should fix it.
Also, I'm reasonably sure Kids Mode could be activated in part with some clever typing in some of the lua files. Make enemies bleed flowers and turn back into peaceful humans when shot!
Edit, to avoid double post:
It strikes me that this is a terrible idea, since DoomRL is more rogue-like than a lot of rogue-likes claim, and is further a coffee break rogue-like, but Angel of 100 got me thinking.
I'd kind of like to see Doomband or something similar. Uses DoomRL's combat system, but perhaps with monster difficulty and numbers tweaked, the dungeon perhaps extended, though not to Ao100's extent, and ways provided to go from the 'dungeon' back to town, where you can hoard mods and uniques at your home and spend the bounty plundered from monsters on a new trait, healz and armor repair, or the exorbitantly expensive nuclear plasma gun and firestorm mod that just appeared in the Black (Exotic) Market. Maybe explain it away as the first level of the base being held by your buddies and used to manufacture some equipment.
It'd be kind of nice to dive into a difficult, populous level without worrying as much about conserving health or ammo... playing at a more relaxed pace, in an environment more Angband-like than Rogue-like. It's sort of hard to explain.

Quote from: Patashu on April 30, 2011, 02:41The sequel to DoomRL is announced to be DoomIRL. Permadeath takes on a whole new meaning and the graphics have never been more ultra realistic. Unfortunately the game could not be made turn based, citing 'inability to manipulate the fabric of spacetime'. Space flight and Doomguy suit included in the $1,000,000 dollar package.
More Trash Medals:
Headshotted: 98%+ damage received in one turn
Headshotted Twice: 198%+ damage received in one turn

Got Headshotted in the turn in which I large medpacked myself in the Mortuary
Got Poor Route Planning and died from it in the Lava Pits while carrying a HPD
Definitely got Almost Doesn't Count a few times
Because You Can's an achievement, not a trash medal...
In terms of new horrible ideas:
Angel of Explodium
Good news: You start with a fully loaded missile launcher and 24 rockets rather than a pistol and 24 bullets.
Bad news: All formers of any stripe have their weapons replaced with some form of rocket launcher. FHum gets microlauncher, FSer gets the original, FCap gets the tactical launcher and FCom a T3/B2 missile launcher. Also, every level is "Khe he he, this will be a mess..." including the special levels, the Hellgate, Phobos Arena etc.
If items were indestructible, that idea would be... well, actually, horrible in a completely different (but much more fun to play :) way.
Yeah, it is more of an achievement, I just think it's hilarious to think of a doomguy's judgement lapsing, waltzing right up to a boss and punching him a few times :P
Corollary to angel of explodium + indestructible items - how about explosive items?

These sound incredibly fun. I actually want them.
Angel of Revenge
You can't actively attack, but you automaticly counter-attack back with your current weapon if hit by an enemy.
That sounds oddly like how I play Battle Network 3...
Angel of Hallucination
Too many magic mushrooms make doomguy one confused bugger.
In this mode, it's truly a roguelike -- you can only tell that there is something on the ground, but you don't know what it is.
And you can tell something is after you, but you don't know what it is that is attacking you...

Did the second one once when I flooded the level with lava.
Another time in an earlier version I pulled a lever to try an heal myself, but it set off all the barrals on the level including two in the small room I was in.(I had shoved them as far away as I could but the room was small enough I was still fried in the blasts.)
Angel of Matyrdom (AoHu + AoP)
You are human (AoHu). You want ascendency amongst the gods and thus want to be pure (AoP). Globes and all the other what not are impure -- you will purge the hellspawn through conviction alone.
When you eventually succeed, you will be remembered forever as the Matyr that took on hell itself.
Angel of RNG
You're probably suffering from a severe Alzheimer. What else can explain all these things in your backpack you've never put there?!
Every time you descend to a new level, RNG kindly provides you with a brand new inventory. Only your equipped stuff remains the same.
Barrels of water!
Not a very damaging fluid, but these are under pressure. They deal greatly reduced damage/extra knockback like rocket jumps, and have a chance to leave water like acid barrels do. They can also knockback barrels.
Angel of Long Travel
It's about the journey, not the destination.
A prequel mini-game about DoomGuy's flight to Phobos. Takes two weeks of real time.
Shesh, now THAT's one "so-bad-that-I-want-to-see-it-making-in" idea.
BTW. Hi, Pass, good to see you around.
Angel of Age
Right now, you're in the peak of health! Unfortunately, fighting your way through hell is making you feel tired, weary and old.
You begin by selecting 15 perks. Every two floors, you lose one (while still respecting prerequisites). Every three floors, you either lose an inventory slot, dropping whatever you were holding in that slot onto the ground.
This has been posted many times in the real challenge idea thread.

You must walk two tiles before you can fire, and even then, you can only fire once when it is time to fire, after which you have to walk two more tiles before you can fire again.
Bomblet Launcher
Fires a cluster bomb. After exploding, 6 bomblets fly off at random angles from 1-4 tiles, and then explode. Those create 6 subbomblets each, which also fly off at random angles 0-2 tiles. Those subbomblets generate 6 subsubbomblets, which also fly off at random angles, 0-1 tiles.
Barrel Launcher
A giant cannon that you reload by standing next to a barrel and loading it in. Only holds one barrel at a time. Kinda inaccurate since the ballistic properties of a barrel are fucking retarded.
Sonic Shotgun: Double Shotty dealing Plasma Damage instead of Shrapnel Damage.
Ice Axe: 7d7 Melee weapon, altfire stops visible enemies for 2 seconds (but tires out Doomguy)

Angel of Angels
Just like a regular Angel weapon restriction game, except you can choose which weapon or weapon class you wish to restrict yourself to (any at all). The catch is that all enemies also use the weapon you use. For example, if you choose regular shotguns, or the shotgun class as in AoSh, every single enemy uses the regular shotgun/the shotgun class (i suppose they could be randomly distributed, or distributed according to hierachy IE former humans get regular shotgun, mancubi get power-modded assault shotguns) as well. Yes, even the lost souls, barons of hell, Cyberdemons and what have you.

That was a rhetorical question :p
Skilled is the shottyman that can assemble and load a specialized ammo belt into his chainshotgun in the time it takes to move a step.
Nah, it'd be better if you had to load all the shells in, one at a time.

what about a gattling shotgun, like what they tried to build on the show 'Sons of Guns'? now that would be sweet.
You assemble Plasma Rifle with Thermonuclear Bomb. Rapid fire nukes instead of energy. You win the game.

I was meaning to adjust it to make it a viable option to add to the game, now all it needs is firing times that balance it.
The first one was an overpowered gun but you can't put an onyx pack on a weapon.
On the one hand, yes, it would be nice to see some of the Horrible Ideas balanced for inclusion... on the other hand, just how powerful should a Plasma Rifle be with a Sniper Pack (guaranteed hit), a Nano Pack (regenerating Ammo but can't manually reload), and a Firestorm Pack (+1 shots fired); all three of which are incredibly rare (and one of which you can only get one of anyway?)

We need moar melee weapons.
The problem with Melee Weapons is that they all do the exact same thing, with only a few variations on special ability. You've got the Combat Knife, which you walk into enemies to attack with. Then there's the Chainsaw, which... you walk into enemies to attack with. Then there's the Butcher's Cleaver, which is my personal favorite because it allows you to surprise people when... you walk into enemies to attack with it. Then there's the Loningus Spear and Azrael's Scythe, both of which have cool alternative abilities, but... you walk into enemies to attack with it. The Dragonslayer is THE game-breaking weapon to end all other game-breaking weapons, and the best part? You're practically invulnerable as you walk into enemies to attack with it.
Yeah.
Berserk! has plenty of interesting melee attacks, and I can imagine bringing some of them over to DoomRL (when tied to specific weapons) could be interesting.
Do we finally get one where we don't have to march (or sprint, as the case may be) into a bunch of monsters with ranged attacks?

Right out of Diablo II, would devour corpses and them spit them at the enemies. (In this place, at YOU!)
The corpses explode when they hit the player or walls, making a 4 tile radius of blood and rotten gibs.
When player gets directly hit by it, he gets plenty of damage and is poisoned for 10 turns, losing 1HP each turn.
If player doesn't get directly hit, but is caught in the radius, he gets confused for 10 turns.
The monster can't use melee attacks, the monster likely swallows the corpse inside and lets it... Rot or... MELT?!

Unique: Slayer's Blade
"Have fun."
Damage: 5d4
Accuracy: auto-hit, 100%
Unmoddable.
If you have the Slayer's Blade in your equipped slot (or prepared slot with MMB), you cannot berserk. At all. Berserk packs won't work, Berserker won't proc and if you're berserked when you pick the SB up, you calm down.
However, whenever you score a hit on an enemy, you get a +1 to melee ToDam. This accumulates, so you may very well be dealing 5d4+30 when you're fighting the Angel of Death.
Every three actions you take that do not involve hitting an enemy or being hit in melee by an enemy, you lose one melee ToDam (does not drain any melee damage boost from Brute).
As an added bonus, whenever you have a ToDam bonus that is above 20, you will leave pools of blood wherever you walk.

Kornel As A Boss:
If you manage to invulnera-nuke JC you would fight Kornel. He zaps you with a Hax Gun that hits for insane damage and rewrites the code of your armour to be gradually worse and eventaully have 0 protetion, and also edits your stats until you suck. He also summons armies of monsters who all wear Angelic Armor [P3T3A3B3]. Occasionally he raises his arms and you must move, for a turn later the spot you were standing on will be cleared, causing instadeath if you're still there. He has 666 HP and teleports senselessly around. If you nuke Kornel you would die while recieving the message "Kornel laughs!" -- "Nae points, PRICK!" (In reference to Still Game). The mortem would thusly say "<playername> got NAE POINTS, PRICK on level 10 of Hell" and the history of player would be like

Hmm... Could be doable as long as there's a way to gib the Pain Elementals. (Since gibbing them stops them from spawning Lost Souls when they die) The biggest hurdle would be getting past Dlevel 1, but if there are enough Pain Elementals to level you up to level 3 and get Berserker trait, a combat knife might be enough to do it.

On use, makes a certain set number of Doomguy's actions take 0s - no monsters can move or attack.
Items can be picked up as normal. Optionally, no ranged attacks launched will actually fire until time re-starts, as they all happen in the same instant.
I'd say this should be an exotic one-time item, like a phase device. Well, this thing is pretty much overpowered, while being easy to implement, just add ~15000 energy to player, and let him work it out with actions. About missiles not firing - it's a lot harder to make, as they are now resolvable on call, while just prohibiting the Doomguy to fire ranged weapons could do, it shouldn't be IMHO the intended effect.
That reminds me American McGee's Alice...
Hmmm.. if it is supposed to stop time, it should also prevent N! respawning, hold off lava and acid waves (halls of carnage), pause nuke timers, stop the shambler's regeneration, stop regeneration gained by some of the armours, stop health decay (either when boosted without badass or from level feeling)... probably a bunch of other stuff that I haven't thought of. Not se easy to implement.
It could have the effect of freezing only enemies, which would not require the above stuff, and should allow you to still shoot missiles as well.
if I understand game mechanics correctly, the next turn does not start while there is a creature with more than 5000 energy, and each action decreases the acted creature's energy count by its length in milliseconds. So, in case the Doomguy will receive a 15000 energy boost, he will have free actions while his energy will be above 5000, and the turn counter won't advance, and any turn-aligned special procs won't work, be it nuke, lava/acid wave, N! respawning or monster regen. Player armor regen uses player actions count, so it WILL proceed - but it's logical, as the time is not stopped for the player, the same with health decay, while I'm not sure which event triggers deadly chill. So if there is no trimming for the current energy value, this is VERY easy to implement. ;)
OK, I guess that's fair. I'm still quite proud of myslef for the list of stuff that I thought would cause problems =)
Hehehe, I actually came up with a very similar idea last night that I was going to post. Except instead of giving you extra energy, you got to act until you got zero energy, then you'd have to wait for the energy to climb back up. It wouldn't just be a single-use item though, maybe something like a staff.
Quote from: ih8regin and other peoplea bunch of technical stuff
I tried to avoid going into too much detail, but I think I underestimated the DoomRL forum's ability to not choke on obtuse concepts like granting Doomguy infinite energy and having his turns still take time, but happen instantly, with the end result being timed things still happening to him and things he's manipulating - allowing powered armor to regenerate or weapons to be reloaded or medpacks to be picked up - while nothing else can move - nukes or lava crawls or monsters. Or bullets, which would stop once they left the gun barrel, pointed at the thing he was shooting, primed to fly forth and
all miss due to being out of LOS hit at the same time as the other fifty in the volley.
For bonus points, the next action of anything in sight range would pretend Doomguy was still standing in the same spot when time resumed. Somewhat handy if you're surrounded by Barons or something and want a cheap laugh.
I think a consume+carry would either be too weak to be useful or a free boss kill, though...

All of this is true, because it's all based on turn timers. However...

This is time based, not action based. Running will slow down health decay, so it would completely stop like acid/lava waves stop and monsters stop. But that's not all...
Quote from: ih8regin on April 06, 2012, 04:21Player armor regen uses player actions count, so it WILL proceed - but it's logical, as the time is not stopped for the player,
You'd THINK this would be the case... but it's
not. If the action takes less than a turn, it doesn't count as an action. Testing shows that if you have a ridiculous speed rating or you're messing with the energy counter directly, armors STOP regenerating because your actions aren't actually using turns (also applies to auto-recharging weapons). The reason for this is to prevent abuse with Juggler's instant weapon swapping.
oh, that's even better, as it comes closer to what the Stopwatch designer intended! And thanks, it's always good if some mechanics is explained.

What about pure melee like AoB? How'd you move then?
Better: Each time you moved, you'd move automatically every (move_speed x 0,9) in the same direction until you hit an impassable tile (or ran out of momentum). Finally a way to chainfire and dodge at the same time =)
Moving in a different diraction while this movement happens would adjust the vector accordingly, moving in the same direction would increase the speed of automatic movement (with some upper limit) and moving in the opposite direction would cause you to fall and be unable to change do anything until the automatic movement stops.
BTW, to make this realistic, non-flying monsters would have to be subject to this as well... demons would be hilarious like this, though what I'd really love to see is the cyberdemon slipping on frozen-over hell floor and sliding across the map.

Anyway, as a regular level this would mean truckloads of frustration. The level I mentioned consists of spiralling one-tile-wide corridors, whereas DoomRL tends much more to open spaces. Firing at enemies, especially when they move from several sides at once, would be truly a mess to control, doubly so if you concentrate on a single type of weapons.

Angel of the Gauntlet
You play all the challenges one by one from HNTR, in increasing difficulty of the challenge (new difficulty ratings in next release). Then you play them on HMP. Then UV. Then N!.
You cannot save; you cannot die. You may bring one weapon, one stack of ammunition for that (if needed), one armour and one set of boots between each challenge. You may retain only 1 Advanced trait taken between each challenge; but if it blocks some master trait, that trait will be block.
When you die, you start the gauntlet all over again.
that thing is just too dam long to play without any saves. Imagine a blackout at AoPu N! within this challenge - POOF, about three days of playing are gone. I expect that saving should be allowed at the very start of each challenge on each difficulty (maybe except N! as it's Nightmare!)

Sorry, I didn't notice the part where 'you cannot save' in Angel of Gauntlet post.
DoomRL was groundbreaking because it supported the use of sound to guide players. Let's take it up a notch!
DoomRL KTV add-on! We can make use of the microphone to "sing" special tunes that does special things to the monsters and/or the level. It can even be an area attack if it is particularly beautifully sung (demons hate nice sounding music).
Better yet, incorporate voice-recognition commands! Suddenly DoomRL is like a commander ordering his poor soldier to go into hell and kill'em all before coming back (if at all).
Probably considered a horrible idea by most people... but...
Female Marines (DoomGirls?)
Mainly because I feel bad for a DoomGuy if I just give him a girls name and pretend. Because I can't help thinking: "clearly he was a guy, its just he got given a girly name by his squadmates". :D
And all this is because I can always think of badass girls from anime that actually have some of the skills I'd be learning in game (i.e. they actually demonstrate Gun Kata, or Malicious Blades), and whom are still sufficiently whiny enough for me to want to get them killed in a Roguelike, too. :D
Quote from: eharper256 on May 01, 2012, 09:45Female Marines (DoomGirls?)
DoomGirls have been suggested on several occasions, I'm not going to bother digging up those threads. The conclusion of most of them is that gender could be set in the config.lua, but it presents some string problems, such as trait names and descriptions. Son of a Gun/Bitch and Dualgunner both have an obviously masculine trait name or make reference to "babes" (not going to sift for the exact wording). Also all the personal pronouns in mortem files (He was an Angel of.... He was a real killing machine.... etc).
For what it's worth, I think that it would be a cool feature, but would probably be underused. DOOM has historically been a pretty lopsided boys' club of a game, and Kornel probably banked on that fact when coding DoomRL. I'm not saying that girls don't play DOOM or DoomRL, I've just got a pretty strong suspicion that there aren't a whole lot of them.
Speaking as a man (which somewhat limits my perspective on this subject) I don't think that the option of playing as a Doomgal is necessary for this game. When you play Doom you're playing as a character: an unstoppable juggernaut of a man who is hilariously macho even without the cheesy one-liners that characterized later '90s shooters. Sure the characterization is a little thin, but Doomguy is still a character, just like Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, etc. are characters (and you can't change their genders at will).
Larry Croft, tomb raider.
Sounds boring. O.O
The character you see on screen is either a tiny icon or an @ sign. Most of the time, references to the character are through the pronoun "You", which is gender neutral. The few directly masculine references are in flavor text of the trait descriptions, which are minor. Any added gender-switch would be purely cosmetic, do nothing but flip a few random words in the skill descriptions, and be all-around kinda pointless.
You want to play a doomgal, put a femme name when prompted for one. This achieves exactly as much as a gender option would.

Actually, to me, Doomguy is characterised pretty well, since I actually owned the cheesy comic (where all the quotes for DoomRL skills are from, I believe) and I've read the rather meh novel (Flynn Taggart, I believe was his name there).

(In case this would not be clear - a nuke _is_ a source of damage. Yes, you can get through one. No, you can _not_ get through two.)
A challenge I thought a while ago. Yeah, I'm that insane.
Angel of Frailty:
"You know that protection can get destroyed, right? Right!? Well, guess what, chump? Weapons can be destroyed if they are over-used, too!". Any and all weapons have limited durability, which depletes on each use. Armor shards and the lever effects related to repairing of armor can be used to replenish the damage weapons sustain over time.

Just when I wondered to propose this challenge, with 2DevsOut difficulty rating. You, sir, read my mind :-D.
2Dev, it's enough to block Bad and Iro with this, because regardless of TaN levels, if you're hit, you are hit for 1 damage at least, which is enough to get killed.

It's better if it's blocked, because why would someone spend a point in a trait that doesn't work? Leaving it activated would be an unneccesary thing to do, as one can accidentally choose it.
Quote from: Kashi on May 18, 2012, 06:02It's better if it's blocked, because why would someone spend a point in a trait that doesn't work?
To get to some Master trait.
=)
Indeed; Marines still get the shot at Survivalist if the traits aren't blocked, which then negates scratch damage.
Question: Has anyone actually managed a Zero Damage run?
I don't see the benefit of taking Bad on such a challenge. I mean, take two traits so you can hold onto one extra HP indefinitely?
And you can take EE on AoMC, SoB on AoPC, SoG on AoSh etc...

You mean other than 2Dev?

2Dev has (twice, perhaps three times):

Let me make it more horrible.
When berserked...
Bru x3 = Grab and throw Lost Souls
Bru x4 = Grab and throw Demons, Imps, Formers and Lost Souls
Bru x5 = Grab and throw Hell Knights, Arachnotrons, Demons, Imps, Formers and Lost Souls
Why no Mancubus? Have you even
seen that damn thing? No amount of jujitsu will be able to launch that bastard across the room...
But seriously, melee DoomGuy as a master of jujitsu-esque throwing. Hmmm...
Next we'll be suplexing trains.
When berserked - can disarm any enemy.
Mancubi rocketz pretty cool!

Object of Attachment
Exotic Consumable Item
Once used, it will fuse any object from your inventory to you, making you take on the characteristics of the said object. For example, fusing medpacks to you give small regeneration, fusing phase devices give you random teleportitis (within 5 radius), fusing homing phase devices give you teleportitis (within 5 radius, always towards the stairs), fusing any of the ammo will cause you to regen that ammo if you have the suitable weapon equipped, fusing a mod "mods" your intrinsic in a random way (e.g. agility mod can either increase your accuracy or your speed, bulk to your health or to your melee damage, technical to your firing rate or to your knockback resistance, power to your overall attack or to overall defense), fusing weapons allows you to do bonus damage of the weapon damage type but at a fifth of what the damage roll is (e.g. fused shotgun gives you bonus of shrapnel damage (8d3)/5 without using traits, but no spread effect), fusing armour gives you half the resistances and one free TaN equivalent, fusing skulls grants you random procs of the effects of the skull.
Fusing the Object of Attachment to yourself or if you already used the Object of Attachment instakills you.
Fuse a nuke, get some revenge agter death! Also, onyx modpacks are instawin then.
...so what happens if you fuse the Arena Master's Staff? Or the Hellwave Pack?

Exactly! =D
Arena Master's Staff will
Spoiler
enslave your mind and transform you into new Arena Master! Same applies for Revenant's launcher.
As for Hellwave pack... It may trigger combustion after some amount of damage, like from Berserker.
Another question arises: how would work the fused Necroarmor and medical armors?
That leads seamlessly into my challenge idea:
Angel of Onyx. The player is indestructible and cannot move. You can only complete levels by getting blasted in the direction of the stairs.
Sounds like a job for a nano modded rocket launcher...

Can I take Ironman trait every 2 levels being kicked downstairs?
If you fuse the lava element you become invincible on fire!
Angel of Explodium:
"Just having you around increases the flammability of concrete". Just as the name implies, everything blows up. You shoot against a wall? It explodes, even if you used some other weapon that wasn't a rocket launcher. Killed enemies? Chunky salsa everywhere, with little bits of gore here and there. Hell, even YOU explode (With a big-ass, nuclear-like shockwave) when you die.
Quote from: Klear on May 20, 2012, 14:44Sounds like a job for a nano modded rocket launcher...
Good luck getting that in the first place.
Angel of Explodium - an interesting idea, but I'd rather call this "Angel of Frozen Hell" - all levels are "Hell frozen over", so crispy and stuff. Not only your shots break walls, enemies' too. (If only there would be a way to retain lava/acid rivers and rooms.)
Except the levels are made of nitroglycerin, not ice.

I thought about the same and I named it Angel of NonSense
The idea was to play as former and look on the level for armor and weapon, when monsters arent aware of you.
After some turns , like AoRA, here comes boss - Doomguy, and starts killing monsters and you. Your task obvious)

Doom: Repercussions of Evil the Roguelike, anyone?
There should be "cursed" boots and another "cursed" weapon. You know how you can't take off the Cybernetic armor, you can't get rid of the Berserker armor or the Dragonslayer? There should be "cursed" boots and a "cursed" shotgun or something.
There should also be a "cursed" suit! Here's what I was thinking:
If you found three pieces to the cursed suit (a cursed armor, weapon, and boots), and wore them all at the same time, you could swap only ONE out for something else when you have all three pieces on. If you have only two, you can't remove either of them unless you find the other piece and wear it. So, you could swap out your cursed armor for something else, but you'll still be wearing the cursed boots and weapon. You know what I mean?
Why not make a "tactical suit"?
Like, if you wear tac armor, boots, shotgun, and rocket launcher, you'll get a +1 protection to armor and boots?
That's a good idea. We already have a set of artifacts and two sets of exotics. Tac suit - a set of assemblies.
BTW, is the gothic armour set actually good for anything? I only managed to get both pieces recently and... it was funny. I was thinking that maybe the lack of mobility would be offset by some bonus to resistances or armour (great for entrenched technicians, I think) but I didn't notice anything like that.

Yes. When you wear the Gothic Armor AND the Gothic Boots, you become immune to knockback and you can't move. You're like a turret. I think that the message is something like "You can't move!" or something.

you become completely resistant to knockback and gain an additional armour bonus (+4, I think)
Actually, it's not only that you become immune to knockback. It's more like you're some kind of immovable fortress with enough dakka to obliterate whatever's near you.
Quote from: Kashi on June 24, 2012, 14:58Actually, it's not only that you become immune to knockback. It's more like you're some kind of immovable fortress with enough dakka to obliterate whatever's near you.
Correct. Oh, and what exactly does the phaseshift suit do?
You float, so you don't touch acid or lava, so you are not damaged by them.
I'd say that phaseshift set is much better than gothic.
At least you don't need to equip part of it in the middle of combat to get protection and uneqiup it to move further.

A consumable which restores health to 100%, and makes you berserk for 20 turns. Downside is, you get severe hangover symptoms afterwards.
Trait-Boost Manuals
Considering the fact that we are in the future, it seems strange that there isn't any kind of book there. Yeah, maybe they just read from their PDAs, but it's still strange... Well, getting back to the topic, these manuals, once read, can boost a level in one basic trait, unless it's blocked by a master.

Die.
Slightly inspired by Klear's posts here (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,5848.0.html), two items sprang to my mind:
Beer six-pack
A consumable, that grants 10% resists all, +1 melee damage and -1 overall accuracy. Consume time 1.0s (hey, DoomGuy can drink, right), effect lasts for 60s (the DoomGuy can sober up as fast).
Effects from multiple beers stack, and with six beers in blood at once, you are given a full berserk effect, except for -10 accuracy.
Six-pack means you can use one ot these items six times before you finally drink it all.
Cigarette pack
Again a consumable, that takes 120s to use, and it's use is interrupted and lost if the player takes damage. However, you rest when you smoke, so a fully smoked cigarette recovers your fatigue from tired to cautious.
A cigarette pack has twenty uses (a standard size of a cigarette pack).

Max or current HP?
Indescribable Object

This thing would make a decent spear if it were longer.
3d5 Melee
Special: improves movespeed, attackspeed by 0.1s when wielded.
120s for just a rest is a plenty as is IMO. Say you're on AoRA :)
Indescribable object - blade or not? Also, wielded in active or prepared hand? Also, one of the names for it could be "katar", or "pilum"

Unique one-time use
Effects: When activated, a swarm of nightmare demons appear and fight on [em]your[/em] side on that level until they kill everything or are killed. Once the enemies on the floor are killed, the nightmare demons turn against you and from then on, each time a floor is spawned, an additional 20 nightmare demons are spawned also that will hunt you down. You will suffer accuracy and damage penalties against them due to your fear of activating something you don't understand.
